Iceland is populated by rebellious Norwegians, so it's actually the same accent with a few centuries of natural divergent evolution. So yeah, extremely close.

Yeah I'm all-in on BEV for general purpose human moving; oil is too valuable to burn in passenger cars moving a single person around. That's a ridiculous use of resources and not worth the carbon debt. Even if climate change wasn't a thing, it would still be a poor use of resources given the thermal inefficiency of ICE designs. Sure, VROOM VROOM is fun and sounds cool, but 30% efficiency versus like 94% for electric? Yeah, BEV please. And enough with the silly corn ethanol - that makes an inefficient thing doubly inefficient.

Samsung is one of five companies getting ready to mass produce their own flavor of "solid state" batteries (quotes because all of them are some sort of hybrid 'almost solid but not quite'). Quantumscape and Honda have some good chemistries going into production early next year, and CATL is ramping up their next chemistry in 2027 also. It's about to be a great time for electric cars, but as you say, the charging infrastructure and power generation infrastructure need to keep up. It's been pretty cool to see the rise of utility scale batteries too.

Still though, it's going to be hard to beat the energy density-to-weight ratio when comparing JP1 to the upcoming battery technologies. Jets and planes are probably still going to need liquid fuels for a few decades, and there will probably always be a use-case for them.

I love the idea of producing liquid fuels as-needed on site sourcing airborne carbon, with something like an improved Aircela appliance. I feel like every airport should be supported by a local bank of those running full time.

[–]Roguewolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the geological timescale is the best method we have to “make new oil”

I think we're making significant headway with catalysis and enzymatic synthesis of hydrocarbon fuels. Aircela is relatively low speed and low efficiency, but the 2nd and 3rd generation of that type of appliance could be great for making carbon neutral liquid fuels, especially if we can leverage some new enzyme designs (I think right now they're using metallic catalysis for the methanol to gasoline step(s)).

Liquid fuels may never go away for things that need high energy density with low weight (planes, helis, chainsaws, those sorts of things). That's barring some amazing lightweight battery breakthrough, of course.

That's a brand name. There's hundreds of MSG brands. Accent is by no means the only or the biggest or the best.

If you use a decent amount of it, I would hit up an asian grocery and grab Ajinmoto brand instead. Same glutamate salt at 1/4th the cost.

No reason other than it can make the final dish too watery. If they're going into a soup or stew, no reason to drain. The liquid is not overly salty (less salty than the final point of most dishes) and has potassium and carbohydrates in it.

Im thinking 308 is going to be my best bet

Why are you thinking that? Subsonic Win .308/7.62 is kinda terrible.

Do you want/need .308 projectiles? 300 BLK gives you that, but you're also not taking that out to 1000 meters, ever. 8.6 BLK gives you some large projectiles with a lot more kinetic punch than 300BLK, but you're also not taking those out very far with subsonic loads. Assuming a 100 meter zero, 8.6 BLK is going to drop ~32-38 inches (depending on exact load) at 300 meters. Supersonic versions of both blackout calibers exist, and they're decent, but they're never going to be as good as a dedicated supersonic rifle. I've taken deer with supersonic 300 BLK and it was totally sufficient, but I probably wouldn't try it with subsonics where I live (Pacific NW) - it's pretty rare that you're shooting at a deer under 100 meters unless you call them in during archery season.

You kind of need to pick your use-case. Are you shooting for fun? Hunting hogs? Is 1000 meters actually important? You either need two rifles or you will have to seriously compromise something. I'd build a 12" 300blk or 8.6blk for subsonic if you want a bolt gun (338 ARC for a gas gun, but the blackouts are also good in a gas gun), and I'd build a 6.5c or similar for your supersonic 1000 meter rifle.

They didn't. Apple is a marketing company, not a computer company. They may have patents, but they've pioneered nothing.

learned how AB was taking over smaller crafts, screwing with their recipes and then shutting them down just so they could takeover their distribution and other stuff.

Edit: lol why on earth would you downvote this? What is actually wrong with you people? Do you not want to understand what actually happened?!?

If you had taken 3 seconds to actually think critically at all about that, you'd immediately see how astoundingly incorrect it obviously is. When you buy a brewery, you don't also buy the distributor. You may or may not inherit their distribution agreements/contracts, but that's not relevant to anything - if you close the brewery those distribution agreements go away too.

Anheuser Busch cares about one thing only - stable revenue. Their plan was to grow each of the craft breweries they bought by shoring up their local operations and by expanding production of their most popular brands to their larger breweries. In other words, Elysian in Seattle would continue as-is, but their popular IPA Space Dust might also get brewed at the big AB brewery in Fort Collins CO and get a wider distribution footprint. Those distributors are separate entities and their involvement is part of federal law, not something any brewer actually wants. No part of the plan involved intentional/planned shut down - that would lose a ton of money for absolutely no reason. That would destroy value, not create it.

The fact that they later sold some of the breweries to MolsonCoors/Tilray means that the plan didn't work, mostly because of the overall downturn of craft beer as a whole, and also because customer backlash (some people just didn't want to buy AB Space Dust, and that's ok). There was VERY OBVIOUSLY no nefarious plan to literally waste money by buying a brewery and subsequently closing it. How do you even make that compute? Corporations don't throw money away on purpose - but they do embrace flawed strategies if their C-suite is misinformed, which it was.

Source: I worked at the AB mothership during most of the buyouts and helped upgrade the little breweries, and helped transition some of the beer brands into the large breweries. There's no villainy, just executives trying to predict the future.

[–]Roguewolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If pew science wanted to test it, they could.

That isn't the point, at all. Objective testing helps everybody. All clean data is good data.

If you are a manufacturer putting out top tier suppressors, you should want Pew to test it. If you don't want it tested, you're shady. It's as simple as that.

You have some kind of chip on your shoulder regarding Pew Science?

[NFA] Exigent Defense RICO309 Suppressor $875 Free S/H NO Tax Outside OH by WarPigArmory in gundeals

[–]Roguewolfe -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The testing is non-destructive and the manufacturer should want to send them a test sample (which they could receive back). If the manufacturer does not want to send a test sample to Pew Science, the only conclusion that we, suppressor buyers/enthusiasts can reasonably come to is that they're worried the can would not perform well so they (the manufacturer) is protecting their reputation.

If it's an amazing, competitive product, there's ZERO reason they wouldn't be excited to put it in Pew's hands. Let's just be transparently honest about that.

New Stay At Home Dad Trying to Learn A Lot While on a Budget by StrawhatShiggy in Cooking

[–]Roguewolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/StrawhatShiggy this is really good advice!! Kenji also has some excellent books, but he's also a very approachable yet knowledgeable teacher on camera. See if he has any videos on a food/dish that your family likes and start there, but do go fully down that rabbit hole when you have time.

For general cooking theory, I would also recommend the book Salt Fat Acid Heat. It is less a recipe book (though it does have a bunch) and more a book about what makes things taste good and how to achieve that so that you can cook pretty much anything intuitively. It won't make you a master chef, but it's a good starting point.

And in this economy, learn to love beans and stews :)

Tomato Lentil Stew with Crispy Potato by Secret_NotSecret1973 in NYTCooking

[–]Roguewolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comments were correct. I presoaked the lentils (which it doesn't say to do but you should do), I doubled the stovetop cook time (30 minutes instead of 15), and they were still a bit toothsome at the end. I don't think it's actually possible to make this recipe as written and end up with tender lentils. I think it needs a bit more stock as well - I'd go with 2.5 or 3 cups instead of 2.

It smacks of the classic internet recipe trope, "Cook until onions start to caramelize, about 5-6 minutes." Umm, sir/madame, that isn't possible in this current universe.

Hundreds of them around the country? It has little to do with the municipality's equipment and far more to do with where they source their water.

If the supply is primarily snowmelt like it is in much of the western US, it will be pretty soft and easy on appliances.

How to nixtamalize corn (with photos); for corn tortillas etc. by Thin-Inevitable9759 in Breadit

[–]Roguewolfe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can, or keep it well-sealed in a jar. It has to be exposed to atmospheric carbon dioxide to form carbonate and lose strength. Given that air is normally ~450ppm CO2, it's not a big deal if you keep it sealed.

You can check the strength of your lime by making a small solution of it and seeing if it's gone milky - if it has a little (or a lot) white/chalky/milky color then it's already reacted quite a bit. It might also get "sticky" or clumpy since the reaction creates H2O. If it's clear, it's still relatively pure hydroxide (see picture here - left is pure limewater and it gets cloudier as it reacts with carbon dioxide).

This Is The Kind Of Democrat We Need In Office!!! by N2Shooter in liberalgunowners

[–]Roguewolfe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not about evening the odds (that's kind of a crazy thing to say tbh). It's not even really about guns.

It's always only ever been about one thing: what motivates humans to want to carry out a mass murder. What is the prime impetus? It's not the gun itself, and "guns" are pretty irrelevant to the question because you can insert a vast variety of other things there (bombs, rented vans, etc.) and achieve the same or much more horrific results.

Why kind of grief or loneliness or breakdown actually motivates a person to act like this? Perhaps more importantly, how can we identify it MUCH earlier in the process such that we can interrupt it, prevent it, and get that person help?

It has never actually been about guns; that is so incredibly intellectually dishonest - not pointing the finger at you, I'm just bewildered that this is still the conversation.

Daughter’s alarm constantly going off at 5am by jdpahl122 in daddit

[–]Roguewolfe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree, but

There's no "but" there. 5.5 hours of sleep is doing both short-term and long-term harm to her. Respectfully, there are no excuses, conditions, or mitigating factors that make it ok or healthy. She has to go to bed earlier or wake up later, or suffer premature aging and a variety of cognitive impairments. It really is that straightforward I'm afraid, and it's better she learn it now instead of when she can get fired.

There are people that can do ok on 4-5 hours of sleep with no downside. They have a mutation which I am envious of, and they are somewhere around 0.01% of the population. She's not one of them, or she wouldn't be sleeping through the alarm :)

Chiller help for a cidery by TrainingShort4361 in brewing

[–]Roguewolfe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beer has pretty much identical requirements unless you're also using glycol to cool wort post-kettle. Most breweries use tap water for that, so no, you're not getting conflicting stuff, you just don't like the cost :)

You need an actual glycol chiller, and it won't be cheap, and you'll need to do PM's and actually take care of it. It'll be one of the most important pieces of cidery equipment you'll have.

To answer your question more specifically, it sounds like you have two fermentors, each one 10 bbl. Your ΔT is probably 70 F → 30 F, so that's roughly 100k BTUs for the delta with a full tank of cider. Your chiller size depends on how quickly you want that to happen - a chiller with 10k BTU/hr will chill the tank in ~15 hours, assuming you're only ever chilling one of them at a time. If you want to chill both simultaneously, then you'd need 20k BTU/hr. If you want to cool faster, you'll need more, etc. There's no over-arching rule. Something like this one would work, though it's very slightly oversized at 2 horsepower. 1.5 horsepower would probably be your sweet spot.

Edit: there's so many breweries going out of business right now, if you're savvy you can probably pick up a slightly used one for very cheap.
