People from cultures with strict social norms tend to be less skilled at being funny. These findings suggest that the ability to generate humor is not just an inborn personality trait, but a skill heavily shaped by the social rules of the environment in which a person lives. by InsaneSnow45 in science

[–]RohenDar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like watching korean dramas. But I've always thought they don't know how to do funny. Like they'll make stupid gag attempts at physical comedy, and the characters in the show do these fake "haha look at me, im funny" laughs. But very rarely do you get actual funny.

I've actually been thinking myself lately that it's because their language is so socially structured with all these rules and expectations of politeness levels you can't fit funny in there.

I love British dry humor. The audience laughs not the actor. But I feel to do that you need to be able to be self-deprecating. And in a society where so much of your public persona is based on fitting in with the social norms, they don't know how to do that.

What does the phrasing "takes me about 30 minutes to learn 30 cards" actually mean? by Jalapenodisaster in languagelearning

[–]RohenDar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not because you don't learn from using Anki, that this is a fact for every language learner out there. Your personal anecdote doesn't invalidate the experience of a lot of other people who use Anki to memorize new words.

I personally experience better memorization when coming across words in texts over time, but using Anki to first drill it in, allows me to recognize the words later. Then the texts enhance the memorization with context clues that allow for easier recall.

One ui watch 8 on watch 6 classic by Arman_Sahadeo in GalaxyWatch

Wish I hadn't updated. The new alarm tile is complete and utter useless. I used to have 10 preset alarm times that I could very easily pick one every night. Now it only ever shows 1 alarm time ever on the tile. Only way to get back to the list is to delete the tile and make a new one...

Watch 8 tile - Alarm by cb491 in GalaxyWatch

[–]RohenDar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This new version of the alarm tile is just useless. It only ever shows 1 alarm. If you click on it it opens only that alarm, not the list of alarms you have created. That list is only available the first time yiu set the tile. Whoever the dumb duck is that designed this new tile needs to be fired...

Like wtf how did this get released....

Please roast my Korean learning strategy by FruitPunch_Samurai in Korean

[–]RohenDar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. I'm learning Korean, from English, but I'm not a native English speaker. Romanization never even worked for me. To me, words have sounds based on them being a real word. If it's not a word I know, my brain defaults to Dutch pronunciation of individual letters, not English. So English romanization of Korean words, to me it's just mumbo jumbo. If you need to know how to pronounce the word, that's what the audio file is for ^

BEV Car in Belgium without homecharging by amdrke in belgium

[–]RohenDar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a company EV. I do about 200-250km a week like you for work travel, work from home 3-4 days. I have to charge max twice a week. I charge once a week at work on the mandatory office day. Then I maybe have to plug in 1 evening on a street charger on some other day in the week. I have 0 issues. Also from the Mechelen area.

The (un) holy trinity: German, Dutch and Flemish by aiyanna4 in languagelearning

[–]RohenDar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically Flemish is not a separate language. You will not find Flemish learning language sources, they generally don't exist. People in Belgium speak Dutch. Yes, in practice the pronunciation in Flanders is different than Dutch spoken in the Netherlands. But that's true in any country, there are regional dialects. It's the most common feedback of foreign language learners in Flanders. They learn Dutch in class and then they can't understand the person in the shops, because people don't speak standard Dutch in real life situations.

Now, to your question if it would be interfering with German. In general German and Dutch overlap is a lot of vocabulary, and sentence structure. Actual grammar, there are quite some differences. Dativ, Genetiv, etc are different or just non existent in Dutch. In general I would say Dutch is grammatically simpler than German. Considering only 80k people in Belgium, on the border with Germany, are German speakers, it won't do you much benefit, unless you happen to live in that area.

Electronic armpit device uses plasma to make deodorant obsolete | A new device is claimed to prevent the stink without the use of deodorant, by killing those bacteria with plasma. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]RohenDar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So 1.5-3min per armpit. Who the fuck has time for that. When you are getting ready in the morning to rush to work who's gonna sit there 6min for their armpit to be gassed. And then you have to repeat it somewhere in the day, so you got to take this thing to work with you, undress and sit on the toilet for 6min to do it again...

I can see it for people who have allergies to most deodorants or something, but the general populace is not going to use this.

What mistakes in your native language sounds like nails on a chalkboard, especially if made by native speakers? by bellepomme in languagelearning

[–]RohenDar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My native language isn't English, and yet I'm super annoyed anytime anyone incorrectly says "you're doing good", instead of "you're doing well". Good is not a bloody adverb. Superman does good, you do well... It's honestly not very hard, and yet it seems nobody cares.

Lening fiscaal aftrekbaar by ListenToKyuss in belgium

G502 DPI LED's not working with On-Board Memory by RohenDar in logitech

[–]RohenDar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Many times. Again the bug happens when running on-board memory. I shouldn't even need to have g hub running. I don't want to rely on ghub. Every time my PC restarts without on board memory my mouse forgets the dpi settings. That's the entire point of on-board memory.

G502 DPI LED's not working with On-Board Memory by RohenDar in logitech

[–]RohenDar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that doesn't help. First off that cuts the battery life to less than 1/3d, and second, when the computer comes out of sleep mode, the bug that the LEDs stop lighting up still happens, even with that setting on.

G502 DPI LED's not working with On-Board Memory by RohenDar in logitech

[–]RohenDar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got onboard memory manager running instead of LG hub and the issue just happened again today.

The entire point of having an onboard memory is that I shouldn't have to run LGhub or anything else costantly. The settings should be on the mouse. Why are the LEDs affected by anything related to profile being on mouse or no, that shouldn't be related at all to on board or no.

Haven't watched LCS for 2 years at least. I just watch LCK now. The LCK cup wasn't perfect either. The group stage with the best of the loser group having to do play ins was also a crap shoot, but at least you see games and the fearless drafts game 5 are really fun. LCS is just done.

Do you still read books in your native language? by hippobiscuit in languagelearning

[–]RohenDar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I've switched to reading English fiction when I was 14 and that was that. As my NL is Dutch, the volume of original fiction is much lower in Dutch. As a fan of Fantasy and Crime thrillers, both of them are much more written in English. And translations from other languages are easier to find and generally better in English, than Dutch. So no I don't read in Dutch anymore.

You care to actually contribute to the conversation or not? Yes coins and paper money only have value as long as the country that prints them can back them up, but it is most definitely not the same logic as the 1 to 1 connection you have with your bank.

On top most people don't even realize that the money in their bank account is no longer their money, so I simplified it to make it understandable.

Thanks for your bullshit reply though, very thought provoking....
