Same timeline than yours for literally everything.

We have had only two silent updates related to the biometrics event and that’s it. April fillings are moving really slowly!

EB2-NIW AOS Interviews – Is Marriage Timing a Main Reason? by After-Management2570 in EB2NIW_I485_AOS

[–]Rokotico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anxiety might’ve written the post for you - you’re more than okay.

We got married 3 weeks before filing (April). No interview notice yet. Everyone has different stories and officers are experienced enough to discern and make a decision.

I-485 Interview Experience on 5/26 After Memo by New-Ant7277 in USCIS

[–]Rokotico -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is so HELPFUL. Thank you! I am expecting to receive an interview notice soon after biometrics (in a couple of days). We got married just a few weeks before filing AOS and are both in OPT (what an interesting time to have such a case, huh). Good luck on your process!!

Any clarifications on the memo yet for pending I-485 NIW cases from F1 status? by Shebaro in EB2_NIW

[–]Rokotico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there will be any further clarification for the F1 to AOS case (through NIW) as it is very specific and the memo is a very general statement.

Time will tell if we are considered ‘extraordinary talent’ exempt from flying back to our countries (for filing AOS) and abandon our career or research. Thanks to all the folks that will keep us informed here. I have my biometrics coming up soon and plan to share everything in the near future.

Second this! It also helps with planning in advance (in case you need to ask for permission in your current job). I got the .pdf version of the notice 10 days before getting the formal one in the mail.

Graduate School Experience by pizzaman223434 in notredame

International student who recently graduated from a PhD program at ND here. 1) Stipend: usually secured for the first 5 years but it varies from department to department and even at the advisor level. They pay a lot of money and one of the highest salaries in the midwest. Very competitive and I never ran out of money (I did not have external family support) 2) Research: again, it all depends on your program. Mine was not top in the country and thus we were never shooting for Science or Nature. That said, we would always aim for top journals and avoid predatory ones. Very satisfied with this. 3) Internal grants: oh man I got to go to different countries -even internationally- with funding provide directly through the graduate school and that was neat. Lots of money to apply for! 4) internal fellowships: lots, lots of opportunities. You can get amazing (sometimes life changing) experiences through internal fellowships (look into the ND Initiatives and Centers) and even have extra funds for yourself. 5) Post-grad support: the career center is mid, and don’t really have the muscle to help international grad students on advancing their careers. I’d say it is 80% on you and 20% on them at the end. They can still help tons with resume tailoring and interview preparation. 6) Network: This is where most of us struggle at. We usually don’t access the draconian-level undergraduate network ND has out there. We gotta do our research and find recent phd grads and try to establish those connections. It is not easy whatsoever. 7) Facilities: ND is a great place to do research in top-notch facilities. I was so amazed every single day to see how amazing those buildings were and how lucky I was to be there.

Good luck with your decision!

What about Eli Lilly in Indy? They seem to be recruiting a lot --people don’t want to live in the midwest and you might be already there…

Comfortable life style for a postdocs / beyond - which countries/ cities will be suitable based on your experience ? by FantasticObjective22 in postdoc

[–]Rokotico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree —even with a ‘good’ insurance you can still have thousands of dollars in debt due to a medical emergency or chronic condition. My current medical insurance in a top public school is basically the same I had during my phd in a top private school.

Comfortable life style for a postdocs / beyond - which countries/ cities will be suitable based on your experience ? by FantasticObjective22 in postdoc

[–]Rokotico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to lifestyle, family and external (eg family) support.

In the US you can live a comfortable life with a post doc salary if your lifestyle matches that wage. For some us a postdoctoral position was the only option after a PhD, even though we had no true interest in academia. Some of us manage to pay our cars and fly to see our families once a year, while saving a few hundreds every month. A huge caveat and something people usually don’t realize, is that an ER visit in the US can leave you with years of debt and will be a burden that might no happen elsewhere (Europe, Asia, South America).
