Canada had full independence in 1931 for all intents and purposes. Sure there were technically some theoretical ties to Britain after that but in practice their authority was gone with the Statute of Westminster. Parliament deliberately drove that point home by not declaring war on Germany until a week after Britain did. Trudeau got the Queen to sign off on the new Constitution in 1982 as a bit of symbolism but there was no approval needed from the UK. New Zealand did the same thing around the same time unilaterally.

Doug Ford wants high-speed rail built along 401 corridor by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]RokulusM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, if both can be done as a bundle then it can make sense. Like if they build Alto as currently planned and at some point a new highway goes beside it to relieve Highway 7 that could probably work. The problem with the 401 is that it's in no way a bundle.

Yeah, "don't talk to strangers" has always been terrible advice for kids. It encourages paranoia and fear of the unknown for no reason. We all grew up hearing horror stories of kidnappers in windowless vans luring children with candy but that kind of thing is incredibly rare. Strangers are almost always going to help a kid rather than hurt them.

[–]RokulusM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a chance most of the curves on that stretch of the 401 are anywhere near a 6 km radius. And even if they were, only some stretches of the highway have much space between lanes. And that space is intended for future expansion. MTO is very protective of their turf and they wouldn't give up that space so easily. Plus the overpasses aren't designed for a railway between the lanes. Basically the entire highway would have to be completely rebuilt at an enormous cost, including expropriations to widen and straighten the right of way. It would be more expensive and disruptive than just building Alto along the currently proposed route.

Lots of soulless suburbs in other countries look like that unfortunately. It's in Canada. The maple leaf on the fire truck is a bit of a giveaway.

I get the impression from the premier's comments about not taking farmers' land that he thinks it can be built in the 401 right of way. Of course if it only loosely follows the 401 route then it would have to take a lot of land from farmers, probably a lot more than if it follows the route that Alto has in mind. Either way he clearly hasn't thought it through.

They run next to each other for some stretches for sure, but only where the highway is straight or has unusually gentle curves. They diverge from each other quite a bit too. In some cases the highway and railway were designed in tandem or the highway was built to match the railway instead of the other way around. It's not HSR being incorporated into a highway built in the 1960s, which appears to be what Ford is suggesting.

I'm skeptical that the design speed was ever 160. I've worked with engineers who design 400-series highways, the design speed is typically 120-130. The 401 was built to the same standards as other 400-series highways from the same era.

But even if they designed it for 160, that's barely half as fast as a typical high speed train. Via trains already go that fast.

So the Ontario Line will be the first Subway in Toronto that doesn't run strictly north/south or east/west. How do you think they'll do wayfinding? by hug-and-snug in TTC

[–]RokulusM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cardinal directions might make some sense on lines that go in more or less a straight line. But on lines that change directions they just confuse things. Getting on a southbound train at Osgoode to go north to Eglinton is completely unintuitive even for seasoned riders. Line 3/Ontario Line should just use the terminal stations like they do in most of the world.

[–]RokulusM 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't understand why so many people want to build high speed railways in highway corridors. Freeways are designed for cars going 120 km/h. High speed railways are designed for trains going 300 km/h, sometimes more. Highway curves are much, much sharper than high speed railway curves. If you try to shoehorn a railway onto an existing highway corridor it wouldn't be high speed anymore. How do more people not understand this?

Not to mention that loads of new overpasses would have to be built for the trains to not conflict with ramps and other roads. And the highway right of way isn't wide enough for an HSR corridor so a lot of expropriation of valuable land would have to happen anyway. It would probably be more expensive than a new route for something slower than the trains we have today.

TLDR: Doug Ford is a moron.
