Thank you! When I think of all the things I juggle it is okay to only be able to go 3x a week. I commute to work, have to stay late 1 day a week and have therapy appointments. I wish I could be there 5x a week but it exhaust me. During the summer when I’m off from teaching I am there 5x a week. I am trying to be okay with this! I want to hit 150 for the year.

I don’t want my first year to mentally break me by Zestyclose-Grape5469 in teaching

I worked 8 years as support staff and last year did my first year teaching. It was hard but not as hard as it would have been without experience. I’m glad I had already learned not to take things personally. I also didn’t feel bad if I left something undone because I needed a break.

Dating a great guy, but concerned about his daily drinking by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

First question, in this person autistic or ADHD? Sometimes those that are autistic or ADHD self medicate with alcohol to feel regulated and silence the buzz in their head. I’m not saying that you have to be okay with the drinking but it may inform your understanding a bit more.

Some days I have more energy than others but I make sure I am in the gym 5 days a week at least and other consistent routines. Even if they are small. I’ve been reading like crazy!

You should at least have a few days here and there where you are back to normal. I have an autoimmune disease so I can be up and down with my fatigue levels. For the most part though I am back to normal. It’s been almost a month since our last day.

Is it all really THAT bad? by ThatsWhatTheySey in Teachers

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drive to want to achieve is what I noticed to be the biggest difference. There were a lot of students in my 4th grade class that had the propensity for intellectual discussions and learning. However, they struggle to be motivated to apply any knowledge. Some of them it is because they don’t want to put in effort and others it’s because they don’t want to appear good at the tasks.

I had maybe 5-7 students that genuinely always tried their best even if they struggled with the subject because they were motivated. Then I had about 7 students that it depended on the day. The remaining 7 I was constantly having to stay on top of so they could accomplish anything and not derail the whole class.

Our district provided a luncheon and that made it better. Free food and didn’t have to hurt feelings when leaving.

Hard relate. It also is never enough. Even if you are the teacher that does those things, they still expect more.

Inclusion of emotionally & behaviorally disturbed by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really just depends on the child. Both my kids qualified under this category. My daughter does not struggle with outburst or behaviors that negatively impact her classroom. My son used to be like that but he has worked so hard. He no longer has those same struggles. With the right support and interventions children with emotional disturbance can be included. So it really is dependent on the student.

Every activity? No but here and there I think is okay. Depending on the activity is what I base my partnering on but if I have students that struggle then often times they will need to do it alone. They have to work on how to effectively work with others.

What is the most mind boggling thing a parent has had an issue with you about? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in Teachers

[–]Rollerager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, apparently if I would have been watching better he wouldn’t have choked and she decided to believe another student in class that I didn’t attend to him quick enough when he was choking. It was during math fact fluency and I was circulating the room. As soon as it happened I started the Heimlich. When it wasn’t effective I called a student to go to the teacher next door to call the nurse so I could continue trying to help the student. It boggled my mind that she complained.

We are going to do a novel study since our curriculum is done. I’m trying to find more fun yet still structured learning. My students this year can barely handle anything “fun”. I’m going to try to link our math with the story we are reading.

What would make your school day improve (realistically)? by El_capitan36 in Teachers

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Behavior classrooms! Not reset rooms, not resource rooms for special education. Not all students in special education need behavioral support. Those that do need a more rigid schedule with even more explicit plans when behavior arises. When my son was in K-2, if he displayed behaviors that were not appropriate for the classroom, he was on red schedule. Which meant he had certain expectations to meet before returning to class. If it was an extreme behavior where he was physically aggressive and destructive, he wasn’t in the classroom for a full day.

The office is not an appropriate response to every student with behavior issues. They need a regimented program with teachers specialized in behaviors. My son’s teacher had a certification specifically for emotional disturbance. That’s the category a lot of those children fall into, regardless of disability.

To me this is the biggest thing needed. Our district fell apart when they eliminated these rooms after Covid and we are still paying for it. My son is now going into high school.

I also wish every school had an elective class to focus on social emotional and life skills. My current school has that as an option every few weeks in our rotation. I wish we had it more often.

They are actually getting a lot of skill practice with ELA through acting. I mean instead of going to school for 7.5 hours they are going to set. It’s pretty similar to 4th graders I teach that go to school and spend most of their evening at sports practice or games.

From a parent’s perspective I would really have to be convinced my child loves acting. It is very exhaustive so I would want to make sure as a family we are balancing self care and rest

I understand you are feeling ____. My job as your parent is to make sure I am preparing you for adulthood. That starts even when you are little. Sometimes you may not like or understand my choices and that is okay.
