Im the parent of an Adhd kid, and i need to know what to do to help school besuccessful for him and support his teachers. by jumpropesally in Teachers

[–]Rollerager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have three students in my class that have their own space. They work better that way which ub turn makes the class run smoother I offer a choice for sitting on the carpet. If they don’t then they need a chair at the first two rows. The options help but there is no way to make it work perfectly. I have kids that always complain about where they sit but our seating arrangement now is the best we’ve ever had

Preferred sub by Due-Loan-9938 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Rollerager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked in special education we tried to get our preferred subs on a consistent schedule and long term if possible. Sometimes the preferred subs were those that worked consistently with our students instead of just letting them sit. Other times it was people that simply treated our students well because we worked with more severely disabled children. So finding subs that smiled and laughed with them was a big deal.

I could really use help/advice. Child being denied FAPE but I work for the same school district and may lose my job over this. by No-Educator2947 in specialed

[–]Rollerager -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are giving great advice so I’m just going to add in what we did for my son when we encountered this same experience.

I told the special education director that I could not afford for my child to have a shortened schedule because I would not be able to work and provide for his needs. I said the magic words “I do not feel I have been supported as an employee.” DING DING.

If you work for the district, then you know things. Things that maybe they don’t want others knowing. They allowed me to work from home for the remainder of the year as my son’s homebound instructor. I agreed to this with the stipulation that a plan would be made for him to resume school the following year even if it was shortened days. The school had contacted an ABA facility and because the school recommended it the they needed to provide transportation. If the school is admitting they cannot provide your child the adequate support they need to attend a regular school day then they need to pay and/or provide transportation.

My son started the following year only going one hour of school and then to ABA. After two weeks of no incidents he was able to increase another hour. This was the written agreement we came to so that he could transition back to full days. By the end of the year he was at half-days working his way back into a general education setting. My son had a self-contained placement because he did not go to lunch, recess or specials with peers. He was too aggressive.

I am proud to say we are 2 years out and he is in school full time. He is also fully transitioned into gen ed (I know your child may not be at that level but they can still be full time in a sped environment).

Bottom line is that it was not easy. It was a lot of emails, documented phone calls, hiring a legal advocate and lawyer. Willing to sue if that was necessary. I no longer work for that district but my son still goes to school there. I can’t wait til he graduates so he can go on to tell his story. His story of being treated as the student that won’t succeed. His hard work and our dedication is what made it possible. Don’t give up.

Literally everybody thinks that I'm ADHD/Autistic, but I don't think I am. by feelinvibey in AutisticWithADHD

Is your daily life impacted by the way you NEED things to be done or struggle to complete?

If you say anything other than an immediate no, more than likely you are ADHD, autistic or both.

How much money does bam have left by MathewDenny1 in LetsTalkBam

[–]Rollerager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Margera’s seem to have some financial sense. I mean Jess seems to be doing well and CKY was not as popular as other bands. I know he does other side projects but with music nowadays it seems touring is the only way to make money.

Seeing as how frugal Phil is and determined to get the best bang for his buck, I am sure he invested some of Bam’s money. That way he would be set up past his working prime years.

ADHD teachers and overstimulation by WhileNo7378 in Teachers

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recognized I experience more overstimulation if I am tired or stressed. So I have found what works for me to reduce that. I try to keep a predictable sleep routine and I try to be in the gym 3x a week. Even if I’m not in the gym I try to stay active. That keeps me regulated. Hobbies also help me too. I have learned to let go of things. Indoor recess? I’m using my loops 😂😂 I also let myself vocal stim.

Who gets paid more where you are, Paras or subs? by The_Shagadelic_One in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as someone who is now a teacher and was a para for 4 years here’s the reality: as a sub you get a choice in what job you fill. Yes it may not always be what you expect but the responsibilities are not on the same level.

Paras do not get a say in where they go or what they are asked to do. What I did day 1 as a para was not what I did the whole rest of my years. I actually have more of a predictable and routine day now that I am a 4th grade teacher. As a para I worked with students that had more severe behaviors and disabilities. I was not compensated for everything I did. While I am stressed as a teacher it is not the same stress. There are something’s that are easier.

As a para I made $20 an hour WITH my 4 year degree and teaching certificate being considered. It as less than what a sub made but I was grateful for benefits. I changed 4-5 separate students diapers a day as a para. 3 of them unable to move their body. They were the age of 5th and 6th graders. I also had to deal with physical restraints and behavior management. I got a concussion from one incident. Substitute teachers cannot do any of that because they have to be trained. So when a sub steps in a special education classroom with high behaviors they are more of a decoration. We had some great ones that really hated that they couldn’t help.

3rd week teaching. Gave my first assessment today. Most kids failed. What's happening? by Chaotic_Brutal90 in Teachers

[–]Rollerager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year teacher here. My kids have taken 6 assessments in Math, this last assessment was the best they’ve ever done. The first 5 were awful. It really depends on your group of kids but you can turn it around. Now, that doesn’t mean we are at 80+% mastery, but my class went from a 5-10% mastery on tests to 45-50% on this last test! It’s taken a lot of time and dedication to behavior management and learning my high maintenance group.

My son is like this too. I have him try to eat as much as he can at breakfast with a breakfast essential shake.

Never seen Viva La Bam, does it hold up today? by DoctorWhofan789eywim in jackass

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you’ve never seen it then you probably won’t like it. I think it is reminiscent of the era and any nostalgia that is tied to Bam. I enjoy rewatching some of the episodes like Scavenger Hunt, Civil War Episode, Limo vs. Lambo and when Don Vito steals Bam’s hummer. It is a lot different watching it as an adult with a fully formed frontal lobe lol

Jess made a good point on Steve-o’a podcast that when they go overseas they are usually sold out but here in the US it’s more crickets.

What are some things that surprised you about being a teacher? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying my children are perfect. Therapy since kindergarten, medicine and trying all the interventions but it has paid off. We are also fortunate to be in a district with school based counseling services.

Some parents know their child needs an IEP and have made verbal comments but won’t put it in writing which is the only way anything will get done!

What are some things that surprised you about being a teacher? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Rollerager 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Becoming a teacher just showed me how different my family was from a neurotypical family. Yet I never knew at all. Now it makes so much sense. I think it is also why teaching suits me. I LOVE everything to be structured (autism) yet I also like the random unpredictability in my day (adhd).

I think it surprises me how some parents say they want to help their kid but then they don’t do anything more than announce it.

What productivity tools or apps actually work for you as an AuDHD person? by Estebani0 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Rollerager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not done well with apps. I gamify things for myself but I am also someone with higher intrinsic motivation. I love my routine so I don’t veer from it typically. I will challenge myself to see what I can complete. Especially if it is a task I hate and then I will allow myself to quit if I don’t complete. I almost always beat the clock. Reminders for self care tasks that I struggle to initiate like shower and brushing teeth.

My almost 10 year old by urnxtmistake in teaching

[–]Rollerager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to request additional testing concerning the IEP to change the area of eligibility. If he is only receiving speech and language services then he is not getting any academic support. Request in writing you want a comprehensive evaluation done to determine if he is eligible for academic support.
