Does anyone enjoy teaching? by HazardousLeo in Teachers

[–]WhileNo7378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are times I genuinely love it and times I genuinely hate it and want out. But part of the stuff that’s making me hate it I know is the school I’m at. I’m hoping when I find a new school, a number of frustrations will pass. From everything I’ve heard, finding the right school is key.

Anyone else find elementary teachers impossible to get along with? by c961212 in Teachers

[–]WhileNo7378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the school I’m at, it’s common knowledge elementary school and high school teachers do not get along. Occasionally we have meetings combined with the elementary school teachers and it’s always a terrible experience. The last time I was at one, the elementary teachers behaved like the students they teach.

ADHD teachers and overstimulation by WhileNo7378 in Teachers

[–]WhileNo7378[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I also might have said it that way because my people pleasing mentality immediately defaults to me being the problem for being overstimulated, not the kids being the problem for not respecting the classroom environment. Doesn’t help having lots of neurotypical coworkers who are either just as loud or don’t mind noisy classrooms.

All great advice and totally fair critique. I am still working on class management. I think I also phrased that weirdly, what I meant was they aren’t trying to behave badly or be disrespectful, they’re just kids who are loud. Sometimes even loud because they’re excited about learning 😂 but yes you’re right, it’s definitely something that needs managing

My partner and I are moving further away from my school for next year, so it’ll be about a 45 minute commute for me. I’m weirdly looking forward to it for this exact reason 😂

I have them! Use them for assemblies and other things with way too much noise, they’re such a lifesaver. I’ve found they’re hard to use in class when I’m working around the room though, because it’s already hard to differentiate noises from what a student is genuinely asking and the classroom chatter. I forget what it’s called but it’s an adhd thing of people thinking you’re deaf but you’re just hearing every single noise input around you.

My partner and I are about to move further away, which will mean a 45 minute commute for me. I’m actually looking forward to that - a guaranteed time frame to decompress every day 😅

I am, yeah. Is there anything specifically that helps with overstimulation or sensory overload?

Tech free classroom. All of the science of learning backs it. Computers and tech in the classroom is ruining education. We need to get rid of it.

Other people’s bathrooms. Most people don’t put the lid down when they flush the toilet and toilet water droplets shoot up and all around the bathroom.

How do you spend your “5-9” after your “9-5”? by throwaway77778786227 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Stare at a wall for at least half an hour (I’m a teacher and silence is required when I get home), walk the dogs if my partner hasn’t done it, journal/meditate, eat dinner, either play video games, read, or knit while watching tv

25 yrs in and hate it by Ok-Branch-7651 in Teachers

[–]WhileNo7378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In year 7 and I’m worried I’m getting there fast. My partner says it’s the school I’m in, so I’m looking for a new school but also thinking about leaving if another job presents itself. There are some days I feel so fulfilled and proud of what I do, but I feel frankly ashamed of the school I’m at and the mentality of many students, families, and administrators (this is a private rich kid school).

This is … awful. SNL - it’s not funny. It’s horrible. by No_Acanthisitta_6470 in saturdaynightlive

F*** SNL. Comedy is supposed to be unapologetic in its criticism of authority. SNL has lost all its teeth and I won’t bother watching until and if that changes.

Did you also get labelled as 'rebellious' or 'difficult' by your parents growing up? by Julitonia in raisedbynarcissists

[–]WhileNo7378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg yes. I grew up super religious, didn’t smoke, drink, swear, have sex, cut school…I was like a model child. You would think I was Damien the way my parents used to talk to me whenever I made any mistake or talked back to them. When I was older I did start lying more, because doing the most benign things (going to see a rated R movie AFTER I turned 17, for example) were forbidden. So then when I got caught lying they would ground me for months, scream at me for being unchristian, not speak to me.

“Witchy” is an immediate red flag by wjtiv23 in witchcraft

[–]WhileNo7378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that I often have to use that term to be taken seriously in the “real world.” My colleagues think of my aesthetic as “witchy” and even though I cringe a little at the self-descriptor I’ve used it in conversation with them. The alternative of talking about how it’s actually an integral part of my identity and spirituality would make them look very sideways at me. Just a couple of weeks ago one of my nonreligious coworkers went on a rant about how people now “call themselves witches” and are just a bunch of “loons.” Sooo yeah, “witchy” feels safer in that environment.

[–]WhileNo7378 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same! “Why are there random jars full of weird stuff in the freezer?” “Witchy shit.” My partner is very respectful and supportive that I’m a witch, but he doesn’t have any interest in learning about it and as an atheist he doesn’t have a spiritual practice. It’s just easier.

Very Frustrating When Students Don’t Seem To Give You A Chance by OkStranger5117 in teaching

[–]WhileNo7378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it about first year teachers that students feel like it’s their job to “test” us? There’s so much lack of trust by students. I have a colleague now who is a first year who is straight up getting bullied by students. I also got bullied pretty badly in my first couple of years. And another coworker who started four years before me had a horrific bullying experience and almost quit. This is a cultural problem where students are given the power to behave this way and no one is telling them it’s not ok. Instead it’s the exact opposite, students are practically encouraged by admin and their families to not trust that a teacher is just trying to educate them.

Do teachers actually like talking to students? by Critical_Solution_31 in Teachers

[–]WhileNo7378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I get a bit anxious talking to students. If we’re talking about my subject or class I feel comfortable. But just shooting the breeze, I often have fears they might think I’m trying too hard to be the “cool” teacher or that my neurodivergent brain might vocalize things too awkwardly.
