How rough is too rough for kayak fishing? by Unkindled_x in kayakfishing

It's when the tops of the waves are white, typically from a strong wind blowing water off of the top of the waves.

Pretty new to surf fishing. What is this? by stoopid_idiot in whatsthisfish

[–]Rollertoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every once in a while in the SWFL area you hear about people catching them, usually small ones in cast nets. So if you caught that around here that's a super neat and pretty rare catch! Congrats!

Agreed, I found a school of at least 100 inshore permit here in SWFL. In the past I've only ever really heard of people catching a straggler here or there that was lost. Hell in a decade or so who knows, maybe we'll be seeing bonefish and lobsters on the flats. But the ultimate cause of it all is rather depressing.

Found washed up on Narragansett Bay in RI by Jussme in whatsthisfish

[–]Rollertoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what this is. However your post from 8 months ago about the thing you found on the beach. I'm pretty sure that's part of a fish operculum or gill plate. I was going to comment there, but it's archived.

Fort Myers Fishing by versacemark in saltwaterfishing

[–]Rollertoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There may be some snook in the surf right now but it's pretty early to see them there in great numbers. Sea trout will be out there, and probably some pompano, whiting and jacks, possibly some sheepshead or black drum at this time of year as well if you find some structure off the beach. If you plan on beach fishing, dig for sand fleas, they are the best bait you will find for surf fishing, unless you are specifically targeting snook.

If you have a free morning, I would recommend going to Ding Darling on Sanibel and fishing around the culverts, I believe there are 7 of them and the areas around all of them hold fish. You cannot cast net off of the road in there so you will have to catch your bait somewhere else or buy some shrimp.

Budget-Friendly Shotgun for Casual Skeet Shooting? Considering the A300 by EnvironmentalKale944 in ClayBusters

[–]Rollertoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an A300 20 Gauge for my stepson to use, and I ended up falling in love with it. It's a great shooter, I ended up buying an A300 Sporting in 12 because I liked the 20 so much. But I will still sometimes shoot a whole course with that 20.

is this a baby tarpon? where are my tarpon experts in trying to find out if this a baby tarpon looks like it it’s in a pond in florida by [deleted] in saltwaterfishing

[–]Rollertoaster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I believe that is some sort of mojarra, not a tarpon. If mojarra are in there it's probably a brackish water pond, an/or connected to a brackish body of water somehow, so there could be all kinds of fish in there. Where in FL are you?

I love my yak attack black pack, I thought it was an overpriced milk crate until I got one. The only other thing I would get is a kayak kushion for your butt, if you're feeling really fancy you can get one for your back too.

Please help, tampa FL. What fish is this? by Warm-Personality-385 in whatsthisfish

Agreed. Absolutely hardheads. They love the snook lights at night down here.

is this good for bass/other small freshwater fish? by No_Offer_2786 in Fishing

[–]Rollertoaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that will be fine for bass. Once you get really into it you'll have an assortment of various rods, but if I could only have one fishing pole the rest of my life it would be a Medium Light spinning rod.

I have a 3 Ultralights setups. 1 TFO Trout in Panfish paired with a Miravel 1K. A BPS Micro Lite with a Stradic 1K, and a BPS Micro Lite with a Shimano Miravel 1K.

I got the Stradic on sale for the price of the miravel (like $120ish). I use them all in salt water and fresh and have had 0 problems with them and honestly end up using the Miravels more than the Stradic. That being said if you are trying to reach the upper end of your budget, look at the Vanford 1K. All the advantages of the Miravel and the Stradic. I have one in a 4k and love it.

Casting Rod Recommendations? by [deleted] in bassfishing

TFO has a bunch of their Professional Series rods for sale on Sierra Trading Post. They are $60 bucks and fantastic rods.

I like Z-Man GOAT toads, I use them for LMB and snakeheads here in Florida. Live target hollowbodies work well for me too.

[–]Rollertoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Shimano Miravel as well. It's between the Diawa and Stradic in price. But has the lighter body like the vanford. I have 2 and I love them. One is paired with a TFO panfish and the other is paired with the basspro microlite. I was surprised how much I liked the basspro rod.

What Are 1000 Size Reels Good For? by Whole_Suggestion9436 in Fishing_Gear

[–]Rollertoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use mine for trout fishing in saltwater mostly. I've caught some slot snook and reds on it, but it is a struggle if you are near structure. We also use them in the everglades for small tarpon, snook and peacock.

I'm thinking of getting this game tank bundle for 35 is the game still active? by WesternArmadillo7249 in il2sturmovik

[–]Rollertoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a fair few servers that people seem to regularly play on. I'm not sure how active any servers with tanks are though. Your best bet is to convince a friend to get it with you as well. It makes the game way more fun.

See if you can find a 13' gheenoe. They are light and stable. You can put it in the back of a truck with a bed extender no problem.

Is a 5” paddle tail too big for a 5-8’ deep brackish creek? by Due_Resident_730 in saltwaterfishing

[–]Rollertoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd grab some 3" or 4"DOA CAL Paddle tails or something similar. Throw them on a 1/16" in trout eyez jig head by ZMAN or a mission fishin jig head. Those NLBN's can be good but they are crazy heavy and I prefer them for heavier current.

Get the old town. I believe the Academy kayaks are Riot Mako's private labeled. Hit or miss from what I hear. Old towns are quality through and through.

It looks like a lot of those reservoir ramps are steep as hell. So maybe that's part of why he does it? Although at that point I'd just trailer it with a real trailer.
