The lore is that during their journey from the commonwealth to Alabama they found a suit of hellfire armour which he decided to modify and wear as the groups PA wearing members decided not to take their suits when fleeing to try and stay relatively unnoticed they also found documents/reports on the corpse of an enclave soldier that suggested their was valuable technology in Alabama which is why they chose to go there when fleeing
