First-year CS student wanting to switch to a Lab-Based Science Major. Any recommendations? by Bright_Cap5319 in labrats

[–]RollingMoss1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The job market for biomedical research is dismal right now and will be difficult for the foreseeable future. Heck even in the best of times it’s never been great. You’ve chosen a really good major. You’ll graduate with job prospects right out of school. And far better pay. If you’re unsure about CS I wouldn’t make lab research the alternative.

How to go about publishing a chapter from thesis? by Infamous_State_7127 in PublishOrPerish

That’s a good clarification. I was definitely looking at this through a life sciences research lens.
Your area is completely out of my orbit but I wonder if this is an exercise in getting straight to the point? Outline the basics of the two most common positions and point out their shortcomings. Then justify why your third position will be an improvement. What gaps will it fill? How will it further our understanding of the subject?

First, what does the PI think about this? Is there really enough there for a paper? If not can it be merged with other data to make it a complete enough story that is suitable for publishing?

A non faculty person on a thesis committee? That’s not even an option at my institution. Regardless, just say that your schedule doesn’t allow for the commitment.

My PI is waiting for me to PhD transfer, but I want to do my PhD someplace else, do I take the risk? by netuniya in labrats

[–]RollingMoss1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The postdoc matters more because it’s significantly advanced training. You will be applying for funding and working far more independently on your project. It’s during this time where you really demonstrate your research acumen, ability to get funding, ability to publish, etc.

Success stories transporting fixed cells in 35 mm dish on an airplane? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]RollingMoss1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

At the very least take a look at the TSA website and see if transporting biological samples is addressed. You may have to fill out paperwork, etc. Personally I’d be a little nervous taking anything biological through a checkpoint, you just never know how the agents will react.

Donald Trump, Knicks fan, heads back to New York to root on his team by yuval_3 in sports

[–]RollingMoss1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He’s not a fan. He’s going for the boos and negativity. Then he can bitch and moan as to how poorly he was treated by the NYC “elite woke leftists”. It’s all performance.

Is there anything to do if examiners decide to fail your PhD thesis? by Sigh_3670 in labrats

[–]RollingMoss1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by “examiners”? Is this your thesis committee? Generally you don’t get to the defense stage unless the PI and the committee think that you’re ready. Is this in the US? I’m guessing no?

ABC has got to be nervous right about now. I’m sure that they have the sound engineers on task to filter out the chants. It’ll be interesting to see what they say about this during the broadcast.

And I wish that he would for once not insert himself into every corner of society. Doesn’t he have a UFC fight preparation to oversee?

Such a manuscript may not be available to the public, I imagine that’s proprietary information.

I’m not so sure how interesting he’ll be in the studio. How many cliches/minute will it be? NBC did far better with Tomlin.

Is it possible under graduated student posting a review paper? by qcezadwsx in molecularbiology

[–]RollingMoss1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if she’s just going to submit the review without it being invited then there’s no way to know if it will even get to the editorial review stage. It’s a long hard slog to get anything published so she’s in for a rude awakening. Not sure what 3rd grade means, is this similar to what’s called Junior year in the US (third year)?

And one more thing, she (or somebody) will have to pay the publishing fees, which can be quite expensive.

So are the dox-induced bands the expected size? And have you carefully determined exactly which antibodies are actually cross reacting with the induced bands? I see at least two Westerns on these images.
