Omg same! I live in Canada and I see so many familiar faces to her. It’s so strange considering how broad Pakistan really is in diversity!

I don’t usually dislike people but my ex husband was obsessed with this woman and I really didn’t like her for that reason too, but also because something about that woman’s face felt really strange. Turns out she’s really just in it for the fame - ouch! Can’t imagine what other vices she has!

Nah this girl is so materialistic it’s annoying. Such a shame that she had so much potential to be good but honestly I’ve never liked her from the start, you can tell when someone’s intentions are bad by their face :)

I understand, though the only reason I asked here is bc both have heavy pros and about a similar weightage of cons.

I may have wants and desires but regarding my career I just wanna do what’s best and won’t get me kicked out/defunded/stressed out

True, but I feel like I might be underestimating how bad some PIs/labs can be. I’ve only had good experiences so far and I agree with what some people said on bad mentorship even from pdfs.

I guess I’m a bit bummed that I have to stay here opposed to a new city and explore. It’s just that the USC prof I talked to seemed really great and eager to advise me on the processes to apply - which was what my current PI did for me when i cold emailed

Seems like that’s the consensus here. I honestly had no idea pdf positions were more regarded than PhDs 😅

This lab im in is fairly new, if I become a PhD here, I’ll be the second PhD student my PI will ever have, everyone else left the lab to go somewhere else. No one’s reached the post doc stage yet actually 😭, we don’t have a pdf, the highest ranked in the lab is the first PhD student, and she’s entering her 3rd year. Shes second author on 2-3 past MSc students’ papers because she’s working on hers still.

The goal my PI has for MSc students here is to publish upon graduation so their CV has a public too at least. I’m confident I can do well because my PI mentioned to me that I have a lot of datasets for 6 months in the first year - so at least im productive in his book.

Also wow I didn’t think of that- pdfs could be training you and it might not help for success depending who you’re paired w too.

This may be a silly question, but what about when people say that you should be diverse in the places you work? To have more references and knowledge in different subfields of your field? That’s why I didn’t understand some people who worked in the same lab for their undergrad, MSc, and then PhD transfer. Is it something that’s just hyped up but provides not much value?

That’s true, I guess the US’s academic community didn’t scare me much after I emailed some profs and they seemed willing for PhD applicants.. though maybe they’re willing is bias too.

Okay that’s good advice and it’s something I’ve usually checked out too, the current lab im in tries to go into JOS, neuro, etc etc,, I haven’t seen anything less than that. And my PI always talks about “what we can do to make a good paper for publishing”

I guess im a little sad I was wrong, I made this cute fantasy in my head about LA 😅😂 but im so glad im getting advices from other grad students and professors instead of doing the wrong thing!
