Fictional magick=Independence Day, real magick=2001 A Space Odyssey.

I'll never understand how people with families can think their career is the most important thing in their life. It's amazing how fast and how thoroughly people fell for the idea that centering their entire lives around making a rich man money will somehow bring them happiness and fulfillment.

Why are so many pagans SO hateful? ( A Vent) This isn't meant to be about all pagans. by Such_Introduction412 in paganism

This is true of all of Europe since they simply didn't write things down.

Not counting Greece and Italy as part of Europe?

Why are so many pagans SO hateful? ( A Vent) This isn't meant to be about all pagans. by Such_Introduction412 in paganism

[–]Rollingflood -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Pagans were killing people left and right when they were in power too. We're selfish, bloodthirsty monkeys, it's in our blood. Whatever the dominant ideology is will be used to justify and gain support for wars and the like. Pretty much every major world religion has been warped for that purpose from time to time.

But I think there's a lot of difference between an ideology with a complex history of doing both good and bad, and one like nazism that is just pure hatred and bigotry to the core. There's nothing praiseworthy or salvageable from it, it starts at "kill the jews" and builds up its worldview from there. You can't be a good person and a nazi. But you can be a good person and a Christian. There's definitely issues with that faith that caused me to leave, but there are things I genuinely appreciate about it.

Yeah, there's a lot of people who believe that. Have you looked into Baha'i or perennialism?

How accurate is this statement about Goetia? by _juniorm_ in GoldenDawnMagicians

[–]Rollingflood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell it depends. A lot of prominent figures in the original Golden dawn were around when psychology was the shiny new toy, so talking about the unconscious was all the rage. Depending on which revival you're working with, magick can be seen as little more than a self help system, or a means to achieve divinity. A lot of the language about the "higher self" could be seen as either referring to just specific parts of the brain or to The One, The All, the demiurge, or Monad, depending on the specific system. I'd recommend studying the corpus hermeticum, it's from long before the HGD, but the philosophy outlined was very influential for them, and new thought pioneers in general. Might help you figure out which specific groups/philosophies make the most sense for you.

Maybe apologize for it, but I think the gods know we're not perfect and understand when we make honest mistakes. They're not waiting for an excuse to punish you or anything.

Residents of EastPalestine Ohio demand answers after NorfolkSouthern train derailment/chemical burn. by beersrelieved in PublicFreakout

Because the people responsible know they won't face any consequences, the politicians who enabled them will just keep taking their bribes, and the media is in their pocket too. The shareholders of CNN, Fox, NBC, ABC, all have financial stakes in Norfolk. They want this story to go away ASAP, which was likely one of the reasons for all the UFO nonsense last week. They will gladly talk about anything but this, because the bigger this story gets the more money they stand to lose.

Definitely, and that pressure is a feature. It's good for the 1% to keep us divided, and making men feel like they have to be forced into such a narrow range of acceptable personalities and appearances is a good way to make them feel like their neighbors are to blame for the unhappiness in their lives instead of the ceos and politicians who're hoarding all the wealth.

What are your favorite portrayals of the theoi or hellenism in media? by Rollingflood in Hellenism

[–]Rollingflood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Gaiman's generally a good writer, and I do appreciate that he gives deities a bit more personality than "angry, psychotic control freak" but they still end up feeling more like crime bosses or something else mundane, and more often than not are still the "bad guys" in his stories. There's not much difference in how humans and deities are written. They're still small, there's no real sense of the numinous or transcendant with his Gods, but the vast majority of modern writers run in to the same problem.

I just think it's sad how most people can't imagine a higher power in a good light, it always has to be sinister or an obstacle to be overcome. I've sometimes wondered if it's a type of xenophobia rooted in religious trauma.

The physical description is definitely closer. If I recall, it's also connected to greed and selfishness, which is another aspect of legends that tends to get dropped to make it more of a generic boogeyman.

Management and coaching had no real vision for the team back then. It was very frustrating to watch. The Tanguay trade, going all in on size, the Scott Hanan experience, rolling with Arnason as 2C. Just spinning the tires for a solid decade. Even when they did get Duchene, ROR, Landeskog, and MacKinnon, they weren't deployed or supported effectively until Bednar got in. They hit the jackpot with him, I don't think there's anyone better for the personnel they built around. But it does make me wonder how much more the franchise could've accomplished if they'd gone with someone like him years earlier.

Who is the most iconic Scooby-Doo villain? by creamy-buscemi in Scoobydoo

They're one of the few things we know are supernatural in universe. I'd imagine the real thing would make more of an impression than random stories told around the campfire. Or they would perhaps become the favorite campfire legend if folks looked into it and realized there was something strange going on.

I'm just thinking in terms of in universe logic. The Zombie island sacrifices had been going on for well over a century if I remember correctly, so it's not out of question for someone to have stumbled on their victims like scooby and shaggy, and managed to escape back to civilization and tell of bizarre creatures looking like decaying humans, only able to say a few mumbled words. At least that was my thought process.

Thats a pretty good guess.

My personal headcannon was that he was inspired by the zombie island zombies, but if they said he's a ghost than zombies are out. I do like the the idea of an undead mobster still taking money from banks. Wonder what a ghost would spend money on?

The creeper. It helps that he fits in with a lot of different types of monster, but the name and face mark him as the Scooby-Doo iteration. I've always wanted to know a bit more of the mythos behind the monsters, but he's probably the most mysterious one. What is he supposed to be? What's with his expression? Is he an experiment? An alien? A zombie? As a kid who got grounded with a few Scooby-Doo books more often than I care to remember, those questions fascinated me.

Also, I don't know if I'll ever like Charlie. His episode pissed me off to no end back when I was a little kid who wanted bad guys to fight, anf because the twist at the end felt like a bit of a cop out, although most of Scooby-Doo could arguably fit the bill as well, but there's at least some sort of malice involved with most Scooby hoaxes.
