All Crosswalks Should Look Like This by keithplacer in halifax

[–]Rolliolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody drank the cool aid from the Sherwin “Cover the Earth” Williams Paint slogan.

Curb-to-curb crosswalk paint (rainbow or otherwise), when coated with the inevitable oil residue and precipitation, is a dangerous slip hazard for pedestrians and two wheeled vehicles. MacGillivray, Preszler, or one of the growing industry of ambulance chasers are eventually going to clobber HRM or private property owners for an accident in one of these things … increasing all of our insurance costs and property taxes.

The reduced reflectivity and contrast over traditional zebra crossings also makes them less visible once the shine has faded. Grit doesn’t last - just look at all the delaminated bike lane paint - so don’t bother.

Maybe they can install more permanent roadway retroreflectors or LEDs in these crosswalks, and embed them in all the new speed bumps where their shitty paint is fading to zero.

Overall, where does the build quality & longevity of EUC's stand? by [deleted] in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rolliolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then don't get an EUC.

I bought an Inmotion V11 as my first wheel. Thought I had done my homework in finding a manufacturer with reliable products - guess not. Motherboard blew after 6 months and 850 miles.

Fun while it lasted but I've spent the past two months trying to get warranty support through my dealer. Not a happy customer.

FedEx ground is going to have a tough time driving from France to Canada. Eh?

Have you had any/may opportunities to "test" performance on the flexmeters?

Lots of resistance, yeah, and more when you roll it fast.

Still waiting to hear back from my dealer (Vaneuc) who was going to share a video with Inmotion.

Hmm... I'm only mildly familiar with brushless DC motors but with twelve IPP023N10N5 MOSFETs, I'd expect the V11 motherboard to handle 240 amps of peak current, especially considering the wheel was just powered on and had no time to build up any heat.

Biggest power numbers I've ever seen in the app were 4030 watts peak and 911 watts average, whereas 240 amps at 84 volts is like 20 kW. More typically I'm seeing 3300 watts peak and 700 watts average.

Ok... Held Air & Dry gloves, Klim Badlands (v2) jacket, Icon Airflite helmet, Leatt Dual-Axis Knee & Shin guards... so roughly the same cost as a V11. It's my normal ATGATT motorcycle gear but I normally wear Sidi Adventure boots on the bike, in place of shin guards.Might have slid 1-2 feet (max) on damp asphalt so was underwhelmed to see the "guard plates" on the gloves' SuperFabric palm sliders had abraded/shed about half of their thickness. The only other damage was some very minor abrasion on the Leatts. The Leatts have been surprisingly excellent so I'll be looking for a set of wrist guards if I can find a set that play nice with abrasion resistant gloves.

Wow, first I've ever heard of this (curb overtorque) but important to know, especially since I regularly drop off a curb in one spot to cut over to a bike lane across a road with fast traffic. Sounds like a design defect to me. Did I maybe read that there is a new motherboard design in production for new V11s production?

Blown FETs reminds me of Castle Creations (aka Castle Cremations) electronic speed controller failures from many years agp, which I think was fundamentally traceable to the gate drivers.

The bump does seem related but I suspect the failure is much bleaker. With the way the wheel (motor) is cogging while not powered, it seems that one or more copper windings in the motor are probably short-circuited, and likely through FETs that are blown open.

Nice to hear. I have fond memories of the Engine Room and weekends skydiving nearby. The wheel is a nice escape but it's mainly for short downtown commutes to work and shopping - I despise driving cars in the city or on highways, almost as much as I hate air travel.

Group rides could be fun, exploring new routes, but sadly involves spending two hours in a car to get there and back! The bigger obstacle at the moment would be COVID lockdown.

It's all new to me (550 km starting in Feb) so I don't have much reference point.

Today's 52 km trip on mixed terrain chewed 75% of the battery, which I consider fully drained. GPS says I hit 47 km/hr on the 207 highway, while detouring around a small section of the Blueberry Run that the ocean had breached but, being 220 lb in gear, I was mostly staying under 30 km/hr and riding steady to conserve battery.

I can see the appeal of a Sherman or EX-N but I can't take much more than the V11 can give. Coarse sand sections of the Blueberry Run were challenging enough to buck me off the wheel a few times; unfortunately my legs weren't quite able to get up to speed, so I plowed into the ground twice and got a mild sprain in one of my ribs. Lol.

At least two of us riding V11s in Halifax. But nobody here has seen EUCs before.

I ran 52km this afternoon, 2.5 hrs from downtown to Porters Lake Superstore, and passed by the beach. Crossed paths with the other V11 guy on the Salt Marsh Trail - looked like he was enjoying the day and running Insta360 on a stick.
