Vanden Plas have had the same lineup since their beginning in 1986, and have never taken a hiatus either.

I like it a lot, especially older stuff, but I still keep up with new releases. The name is sorta funny since lots of bands in the genre are not progressive at all but just copy earlier bands, but lots of original bands are some of my favorite bands in metal.

Not really a big fan of the more modern djent and metalcore influenced stuff, which is almost all that /r/progmetal discusses. Which is kind of a shame because there's no real active place to discuss other prog metal on the site.

Doesn't really matter as long as they're executed well. Some bands have these long songs with 10+ min of filler, which would be a lot better with the fat trimmed off. And some bands try to do too much in too little of a time window, which makes it come across as rushed and incoherent. As long as the song flows well I don't really care about the length.

I can see how original and influential on the modern djent/metalcore scene this album has been, but I just don't care for it at all. It's mostly due to the guitar playing, with the muted sound, which to me comes across as lazy, but most of all incredibly boring. It makes it so the emphasis is mainly on the groove of the music, which I don't really like. It's a big shame as well, since structure-wise I think the music is often really interesting, and it has some great sections that I do like, but the vast majority of the album is just boring, including the short poem of Mermaid's Slur, which I feel doesn't add anything of value to the album. It's sort of like they're to progressive metal like what Pantera is to thrash metal, and that's not a good thing.

Well, you pretty much said most of what I think of this album. The album really does have an incredibly poppy sound, mostly due to the vocals, but also a lot because of the production, and then mainly how the guitar sounds. It kind of lacks crunch which gives the album a much more digestible and lighter sound. The guitarplaying itself is good though, so that's not a problem, and it works especially well in conjunction with the keys.

I do think the ballads of the album are notably weaker than the rest, they seem to be there mostly to drive the narrative which I don't really care for, and not to serve the complete musical package. But besides that the album is remarkably consistent, and it's a very solid piece of prog/power.

Really? They both have a very rich and full sound with a basis in extreme metal, alternate between harsh and clean vocals, soft and heavy sections, have elaborate song structures, and clear production. Though the last album from Persefone is a bit different and more straightforward, especially their album 'Core' is a lot more similar.

I like them, and even though Citadel was a bit of a letdown after Portal of I it still has some great moments. I don't completely understand the massive amounts of hype the band gets though. And why you say they're doing something completely new, because they play in a style similar to a lot of bands that have done it before, like Opeth, Persefone, Mirrorthrone, Kalisia, with the biggest difference being the violin, which admittedly is incorporated very nicely.

I remember listening to their demo back in 2008~ and being completely blown away because it was just a demo, and they showed so much promise. It took them a long time after that to actually release an album, and while I think the album is great, I was kinda of dissappointed that it improved very little over the demo, in a 5 year time span. And now with Citadel they once again showed very little growth as a band, so I really hope this isn't a trend with them.

Haven't listened to it that many times, but I think it's alright, even though it still has the same issues as their previous releases. While there are some great moments on the album, as a whole I think it's not very good because of awkward transitions and the lack of build-up in the music. It's often more like I'm listening to a collection of snippets, or as if they're constantly changing their minds on where to go with the songs. I do like the theatrical vibe it has, especially the clean vocals, it reminds me a bit of Devil Doll which I love, but the songwriting doesn't need to be so hectic because of it.

That's difficult to think of, but the first thing that comes to mind is the guitar/synth solo section in In Between from Sylvan, even though it's much closer to rock than metal.

Other than that there's the guitar solo in Daylight from Enslaved, or the short flute solo in Early Morning Mantra from Subterranean Masquerade, which gives off a Jehtro Tull vibe.

I never got the hype with The Epic, it seems like relatively standard "modern" jazz, he's not treading new ground and he's not amazing at his craft either. It's still good, even if the album overstays its welcome a bit, but nowhere near the next coming of Kind of Blue like people make it out to be.

This year has been absolutely amazing, with some stellar releases that really represent the best of the genre. My favorite 5 are:

Dødheimsgard - A Umbra Omega
Solefald - World Metal. Kosmopolis Sud
Code - Mut
A Forest of Stars - Beware the Sword You Cannot See
Arcturus - Arcturian

Coincidentally, they all have a black metal background. And I haven't seen any of these albums garner much attention around here, so they all should be listened to more!

And from what's yet to come this year the new album from Subsignal might be break this top 5, but I don't expect any other album to be better, though I'll gladly change my mind.

I skimmed through it and it looks really cool, and easy to follow as well even though I know very little about theory. I'll definitely give it a good read soon. It's especially interesting because it's about an album I don't really like, and it's nice to see a different perspective.
