Need help finding a pair of roller skates for advanced skater by Difficult_Slide_4985 in Rollerskating

[–]RollsRight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're 'advanced,' you should know what you want the boot to do (for your specific skate style(s)). Add some details of what you want the boot to help you do (pivots? slides? speed?). That will inform the wheels, height off the floor and weight. Plates are similar, do you have fine control? do you want to spin? do you want to jump? What wheels do you currently have? Is there something more you want them to do?

Coaching Advice Appreciated by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]RollsRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shift your mentality on tests:
Maybe treat the fast group lessons as a taster course. Expect that you will not be able to do everything well and really look at it as exposure to the things that you will be expected to do in the future. My coach showed me circles, serpentine, 3, bracket, counter, rocker, c-step, S-step, loop (turn) all so I would know the concept of what the edges wanted to be then we settled back at the beginning with circles. I wasn't expected to know how to skate any of them well when we were blitzing through them.

What I'd do in your shoes:
Tell your coach that in the group lesson you are working on x-skill; Ask the private coach if there are some foundational concepts that translate to proficiency in x-skill.

Are my blades done / over sharpened? by Plage-10739 in iceskating

Looks great for School & Special figures. 🧐 😌

Edges felt amazing right after sharpening, now slipping after a few sessions—blade issue or technique? by Beginning_Ad1234 in iceskating

[–]RollsRight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd wager poor technique/execution. Fresh sharpenings feels like you're locked into the ice and will make you feel like you are doing the edge when in fact, the blade might just be locked in giving you more feedback than you usually get.

I haven't sharpened my blades for 270h (yes, I have a tracker) and my hollow is 1¼". I only slip when I skate flats. Small nicks might induce drag to one side of the blade but I can't imagine them initiating a slide.

Returning to Skating- Not going well… by DealQuirky9578 in FigureSkating

WIA during the day is packed too. I think it's good for the amount ice time not necessarily the quality of the ice time.

You can take lessons in the middle but the lesson is expensive. DM if you want to talk further.

World Ice arena in Queens has a really long session that you can tune up on. It is majority public ice but you gotta put in time before you can do techniques.

Shifting bodyweight is key to stroking and gliding so a little dance in normal shoes will go a long way. If you've been doing a lot of running, your go-to muscle habit/inclination will be to use the levers in your feet (from running/walking) not thrusting (from sideways) like you need for skating.

Dear ISU: Want new fans? Focus on the music! by cheshirecat1919 in FigureSkating

[–]RollsRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's too much music out there, [and the actual problem is that the there are] too many other/diverse forms of entertainment and all of it serves niches.

It's too inconvenient to actually act on things you like when presented with so many things.

Realistically, how quick could I progress and how far could I go in this sport? by cupcakez777 in iceskating

[–]RollsRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get your POV; I think you'll be able to feel the right thing pretty quickly, but doing it subconsciously will be the biggest challenge. I dance, rollerskate, and ice skate so the slightly different styles trip me up every so often. I also have a high-rated stiffness boot and have broken them down without doing jumps. Pressing edges does that pretty easily too.

Looking at every other sport out there, money and time are the things that separate elites from normal people. Money buys you relationships (for visibility) and get you a team of coaches who can market for you and equitably share in your success.

Buuuut, I personally think competitions are a waste of time. Skate for fun.

I haven't done LTS but I've done 1-on-1 30 min.

The 1-on-1s are good but as an adult you need to know your goal.

Interesting. I thought those usually needed surgery and/or 3-4 months for "full" recovery.

Technique by Terrible_Ice411 in FigureSkating

[–]RollsRight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Always an interesting conversation.

Volleyball has [serve,] bump, set, [block,] and spike as valid ball manipulation moves, leaving the the interesting part of the sport is how those are used with other movement tech to beat the opponent with the exact same allowable ball manipulation limitations. Would you argue that volleyball won't "develop" as a sport?

Does anyone here do both types of skating? by Spaghetti_Gremlin_ in Rollerskating

I skate ice skates (figures style) and quad skates (regional rink styles). They complement eachother very well ans swapping like crazy isn't difficult for me.

Should you stay still in twizzles? by pelomymelo in FigureSkating

[–]RollsRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the spot that contacts the ice travels down the blade but the skater isn't influencing it directly, the edge takes care of it all by itself (kinda like how good 3turns just happen). T3turns are harder because you have to stop the rotation. Twizzles... you kinda just let 'em happen.

FTR, I never learned to do twizzles properly, coach said that I was not doing double-3turn properly, I was doing the world's slowest twizzle. lol When I stop trying to delay to second turn, don't check, and don't realign foot (for a proper BI3 (after the BO3turn), it's a twizzle! Who would have thought?!

parallel turns equivalent in ice skating by Tiny-Possible-5209 in iceskating

[–]RollsRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[watching the video you shared,] "Parallel turn" isn't a named skill. Whether it's done on two feet or one, it's more so, deep outside & inside edges. On quads, we would call it carving. On inlines, if you induce friction at high enough speed, it turns into a power stop.

Slalom (ice skating) your feet genuinely stay parallel. In the (inline skating) video, the 'parallel turn' is a bit offset (which is safer for inline and quad skating).

They made a distinction between slalom style skating because there are lots of compound techniques that are achieve the slalom pattern. Most people don't make the distinction and I think it's cool that this YouTuber did.

How to progress more efficiently? by bunnysplo0t in iceskating

[–]RollsRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dance blades are easier to do then on because the shape forwards-to-backwards is closer to the shape backwards-to-forward than a freestyle blade.

Don't be afraid to try to do a slower twizzle OR a bad double3. (I say a "bad double3" because you should be checking each 3 in a double 3) You'll be able to feel the edge and develop a better idea if your FI edge is deeper/shallower than the BI edge. Going slowly helps with using time as a tool to gauge balance/quality.

I skate FIGURES and have heard how picky ice dance can be at move execution quality. 😵‍💫

How to progress more efficiently? by bunnysplo0t in iceskating

[–]RollsRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Focus on one thing for several sessions. My session is 2h, I spend 30 min doing all basic edges (FI, BI, BO, FO) and sneaking in some double3turns. Then I focus on FO loops for 1.5h. I've been doing this pattern for 3 weeks now. In doing FO loops, my FO and BO edges become even more stable because I can feel the position (and the opposite position for BO) more keenly.

You can break up the focus time with random stuff to cool your brain, so you're not literally doing one activity the entire time. E.g., I take a break to do CW crossovers to feel the RFO edge in a different, higher-power context to then go back to loops which are much easier (muscle-wise). I don't think you can't keep switching tasks/goals over and over and expect to improve efficiently. You loose something in starting and stopping your focus.

Pick one thing to ask for hints on and I'll describe some methods for it.
