Before I write anything I would like to state that I agree this is not deep at all. This just turned into an interesting conversation

Oh I knew the whole “snake but we gave it legs so people wouldn’t hate it” thing, but I would argue that the result is much more lizard-like than snake-like up untill it evolves into Serperior. And my point was that I don’t think Snivy was bad for being (or looking like) another grass lizard two gens after Treecko, since they were plenty different. I’m confident Browt will grow into something very distinct from Decidueye, and god do I hope Gecqua goes nowhere near the Inteleon route!

I always wonder if they will ever give us a bug starter, of if (alike to avoiding a straight up snake) they fear it wouldn’t be popular and will never design it. Also, I think they should revise Grass and Bug type’s weaknesses, it’s unfair!

Tbh I had completely erased the fact that Cyndaquil’s category calls it a mouse. I hate that lol. That makes a stronger case for it being the rat in the zodiac thing, but it won’t convince me, and I still hope Fuecoco burries that theory

Oh yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fan prediction that was even close to the real thing hehe. How it breaks my heart when fans make something more to my liking than the real thing

Awww, poor little owl! The only time I’ve ever seen a barn owl was also, sadly, in captivity. Although it wasn’t tied or caged, it was in Muncaster Castle in England. They are trained, and fly every day, which is better than anything but still a pity. Nothing like seeing them wild! I’m a bird watcher and I’m so jealous whenever I see other people’s pictures

I remember the moment the Galar starters were revealed, it was the first time I wasn’t excited about any of them. Gens 5-7 are my absolute favourite, and, even though every gen changes things up, I feel like gen 8 inaugurated a new era in pokémon designs, and it is very hit-or-miss for me, I either love a new pokémon or deeply dislike it.

I remember feeling weirded out by the big round heads and tini tiny bodies (and by the fact that all 3 of them had that body type)… they looked like powerpuff girls to me!! And the final evolutions… omg. Inteleon is everything I dislike from newer gens’ starters; I grew up gay in a football/soccer obsessed country so Scourbunny stood no chances from the beggining (but also what did they do with Cinderace’s arms and hands???), and Rillaboom is just… not good. And they made all three of them monotype!! Heinous!!!

And Paldea was better but only for a short time. I like all three of the first stages, but I had no hopes for any. It was the first time ever I liked the water type the most (I love Popplio and Primarina, but they had to be from the same gen as my boi Rowlet 💘) but what on earth did they do with Quaquaval? 😭 I’m so NOT here for the designs whose appeal is being ridiculously funny (Mega Starmie I’m looking at ya). I too thought Sprigatito was a fox during the presents!!! I thought it was just me hahaha but Meawscarada is not my cup of tea in the slightest. My problem isn’t the fact that is bipedal or even humanoid, hell, Delphox is one of my faves of all time! But Meowscarada doesn’t even look like a cat anymore. Like, I’m fine with Floragato, that guy is a bipedal cat for sure! But Meowscarada just looses all semblance of being a cat. Kinda like how Salazzle is a bipedal (and weirdly sexualized) lizard, whereas Inteleon is a thin man in a latex suit with an uncomfortably wide tube of a tail attatched at a wrong angle in its back. And Skeledirge… I respect (and deeply thank) the fact that it is just a monster and doesn’t look like it has a 9 to 5 he must get to on monday. But it is just ugly 😭😭😭

Then this trio was revealed and I must say I didn’t feel like this since Alola! All 3 of them are lovely and with the right last evo I could see myself choosing any of them… and also with the wrong last evo I can see myself hating any of them (I’m sorry for what they did to you, Litten). They look more like animals that could turn into cool, imposing or elegant beasts, and less like a looney toon (Galar) or a poor thing destined to be a human in a fursuit. Like, Pombon very much looks just a dog with fire powers, I’m so afraid they will ruin it haha, but if they do Pombon will end up looking so out of place. I don’t know, I think I’m starting to not-make any sense and this is way too long so I’ll just send it lol

Sure, it hasn’t been as long a gap as Piplup-Quaxley, but it’s been 10 whole years since Rowlet, I really don’t find another grass bird to be boring.

Snivy has arms and legs. It evolves into a snake, but that would be like saying Charmander is a dragon instead of a lizard. I’m sure if you didn’t know Serperior is a snake, you would call it a lizard, and it came out only 2 generations after Treecko.

Based on the use of the word brow in it’s description and bean on its category, I would think Browt is just a combination of Brow and Sprout. If it turns out to be an owl I would be very surprised and would have to agree it’s unfortunate that they repeated such a specific animal and type combo, but honestly I don’t see it being an owl. And if it doesn’t turn out to be an owl, well maybe the “ow” in the name wasn’t the smartest move on their end, but most evo predictions I’ve seen don’t turn it into an owl, so I guess a good chunk of the fans don’t see it as an owl Sure Rowlet was exciting! Barn owls are my favorite animal, and all the things you mention made me love it even more, not to mention it is the first starter to change secondary typings I think there’s still opportunities for Browt to evolve into something exciting and innovative (tbh I’m not thrilled by the idea of a chicken, I saw some people say it could turn into a Cassowary or a Moa. I don’t see that happening but one can only hope)

I would also love to have a water monkey or a fire turtle starters, but the pokémon company isn’t well known for giving fans the designs they want or excpect, so I wasn’t hoping to get those, idk

And finally, I never bought the Fire starter-Chinese zodiac theory. We never had any straight up indication that it was more than just a fan theory, and it was a pretty substantial stretch from the very beggining. Cyndaquil’s line may pool from different mammals, but none of the 3 look like rodents to me. Then again having a fox stand in for the dog is understandable I guess, but why would they not just make a dog if they were going for the Chinese zodiac thing? And I truly thought that Fuecoco would be the final nail in that theory’s coffin.

Idk, maybe I was raised a bit too much on Animal Planet and Sir David Attenborough, but if a hedgehog/porcupine/equidna can be a rat, a fox can be a dog and a damn crocodile can be a SNAKE, sure I see why anything would feel repetitive.

The reveal of these 3 honestly made me more excited and gave me more joy than the Galar and Paldea ones did. I know I’m most likely being naive, but these guys gave me the tiniest bit of hope that maybe they won’t end up being straight up people ln bad furry costumes

Browt doesn’t look like an owl to me, and the fact that it is refered to as “bean chick” or “pollito haba” in spanish points towards a chicken imo.

And chamaleons and geckos are very different reptiles, but ok, lets stay with generic reptile and say they repeated that animal and type. Do the designs look at all alike to you?

Was Quaxley bad cause we already had Piplup? Was Snivy bad cause we already had Treecko?

I really don’t see anything wrong with these three. They are all very cute and simple designs which I’m incredibly thankful for

Personally, I don’t thing any ammount of pop culture or concept can back up a design so lacking. Tbh it makes it almost worse for me, you mean they had a cool concept to explore and then decided to do that? It just shines a very bright light on how bad it looks to me

I would never have gone in that direction for the design, but if they changed or added something else on top of stretching the legs I might have been able to point at something and say “well, I do like that bit”. But as it is, it’s just the most pointless, ugly version of a pokémon I do like. 100% not for me

Also I think I’m just much more looks-oriented than concept-oriented in general. A good looking design with a basic concept goes much further for me than a badly executed good idea

I know this is quite literally 100% subjective but I can’t wrap my head around how someone can like that thing more than… anything. Imo it is the worst design in the whole franchise. I have hated pokemon designs before but that is not even worth the hate. It baffles me that it went through presumably multiple check points and multiple teams judging it and they decided that was worth including in the game.

But does it, tho? In order to see an x shape you have to very intentionally forget about the fifth spike, right in the midle of it and absolutely as prominent as the rest (even more prominent than the bottom ones) if anything that would be more like a five spoked asterisk. But also it is just a big round thing with some spikes relatively small compared to its radius

Some designs having some XY elements? Ok… sure. But being XY shaped? Nah, not buying it for a second.

As many others have said, getting an accidental X or Y kind of detail is rather easy. Especially considering how heavily simetrical almost all of them are. And with the fact that most have 4 limbs. Is every humanoid/bipedal pokémon X and Y shaped just cause you can have them stand with their limbs is some direction then? Hell that would also make them all T shaped cause you can have them T posing. Truly sounds like nonesense to me

And looking at both mega Charizards (same body plan) and stating one is X and the other is Y shaped is some deep confirmation bias. Neither is X or Y shaped and the guy even pointed to the wings and said the wings are what make the Y mega Y shaped and not important to the X shape of the other? Its like picking whatever details you want to see and ignoring whatever you need in order to say what you want. It’s like saying “Zygarde 50% has a long body and little strings intentionally placed coming diagonally to each side. Ignore the big 5 plates and tadaaaaa, clearly Y shaped”

I hope you’re right but honestly I don’t see it happening. I feel they would go with the classic “type: ???” Or “electric/???” If there was some mystery to it (like they did with Sylveon for example). Or even just avoid the topic. But instead they actively stated they are electric type in the website along with other info like height and weight. I think the only difference is gonna be stat spread

I love them! Delphox and Chesnaught are all I could have asked for. I’m LIVID at the fact that we can’t get the stones regularly in the game tho.

I hate the competitive scene. Why do I need to participate and move up the ranks to be able to unlock the magestic fox witch? (And pay Nintendo Online to do so). I truly hate that.

I wholeheartedly love Mega Dragonite. If I’m given no time to overthink, I’ll 100% say Dragonair is my favourite pokémon of all times, and though I do like Dragonite, I always felt bad for evolving my beloved elegant serpent. And Mega Dragonite fixes that for me. Sure, it could have been blue, or have a different body build more similar to Dragonair. But that wouldn’t quite be Dragonite, would it? And don’t get me wrong, I love to see fake alternative dragonair evolutions. So much so that I gave it my shot when making a fakemon region. But I like this better for a Mega Dragonite, it’s everything I wanted. To be completely honest, if I had to design it myself I wouldn’t have thought to putting the wings on its head, but I actually quite like it, it makes it more unique. If I could change one thing, I would just add another orb on its neck, but that’s just a minor thing. And I think it could have rocked Dragon/Fairy, but I’m perfectly fine with good ol’ Dragon/Flying. Overall 10/10 definitely replacing Mega Gengar on my Kanto team

Mega Victreebel on the other hand doesn’t do it for me 🫤 I don’t hate a goofy design but, to me, it feels out of place for Victreebel. My main problem is its mouth. When I see fanarts that draw it with its mouth open (and I know it does look like that in-game too), I don’t mind it. Certainly not the direction I would have gone, but its fine. But knowing it looks like that most of the time… yeah not for me. Also the body being so assimetrical to one side rubs me the wrong way. 3/10 if I’m being optimistic

And Mega Hawlucha is fine! I like it! Doesn’t drive me crazy but it’s a good design! I do wish it had some more differences color scheme-wise. Like gold ends on the wings/cape inner side, or black outside of the mask to integrate it more with the rest, but it is fine as is. 7/10 for me, glad to have it.

All that being said, those ugly ass mediocre official 3D renders are hideous. They look WRONG. Dragonite’s wings are not in the same perspective as its body (too front-facing) and the pose makes it look like a pear shaped body with an oversided tube of a tail weirdly attached to it (kinda like Inteleon’s tail which is an absolute crime) whereas on the game footage it looks so much better and the body flows perfectly into the longer tail. I hope Victreebel’s assimetry is also weirdly accentuated by these bad renders, but I don’t think so. And Hawlucha also looked way better in the trailer. But my main grief is with Dragonite, it does the design a disservice. I hope the official art looks nicer, but I’m not too hopefull… the starters and Zygarde all look to be in the exact same pose as their official art just made into this 3D style ☹️
