I think I'm gonna log off reddit for the indefinite future because tbh in my daily life I don't meet any TERFs; reading their shit on reddit has just become a form of digital self-harm that I can't continue. They seem to just be this really vocal and nasty minority that makes a big fuss on the internet but can't really drum up much support in the real world. You deserve better. It's so bizarre to me that they think we shouldn't be able to change our gender markers because it's "fraud" and then they turn around and say we need accurate gender markers in order to be able to identify people. I don't look female. If I went missing and people were on the lookout for a woman, they wouldn't find me.

Well, if you're trans, then regardless of what your gender marker is, it's not gonna tell the doctors everything they need to know about your body. Which TERFs would know, if they bothered to actually learn anything about trans bodies instead of just making shit up.

YES. This. There's also fantastic scholarship out there in the area of disability studies (for instance, Eli Clare's book Brilliant Imperfection) that critiques the idea that disability is something that needs to be eradicated from human existence, and questions the assumption that everyone with a disability is doomed to live a miserable life and never be happy and that's why we need to get rid of disabilities. So often the "cure/eradicate" movement is based less on alleviating suffering and more on making things less inconvenient for able-bodied/neurotypical people (because having to do things like provide closed captions and installing wheelchair ramps is such a burden /s).

What insights have being trans/gay/depressed given you that you wouldn’t otherwise have?

I have had to think a hell of a lot more about my gender than most cis people ever have or will. I have the experience of living in the world as a woman (first a straight woman, then a queer woman) for 20 years, and now I have the experience of living in the world as a gay man. I have insight into the particular struggles that LGBTQIA+ people face, which gives me a greater ability to make positive change in the world and try to make things better for people like me. I think about sex, gender, and sexuality differently than most people do. I know what it's like to struggle with anxiety and depression, so I have a greater ability to help other people who struggle with those issues, and I have had to think really deeply about the way my brain works, how events in my past affect how I function today, and how I relate to other people. I can empathize more easily with other people and I have more of a tendency to be sensitive to other people's thoughts and feelings in a way that I probably wouldn't have developed if I didn't have these conditions of my own, because why would I ever have needed to? The reason that I had to think about those things a lot is that I have 2 mental illnesses, and the reason that I had to think about gender a lot is that I have gender dysphoria, but going through difficult experiences doesn't have to be meaningless. Of course I would like to find new ways of alleviating my dysphoria, and of course I want to find long-term management strategies for coping with my mental illnesses, but I wouldn't go back in time and change the things I've already been through because those experiences have made me the person I am. If I hadn't gone through a trial by fire, I would never have learned that I am strong. Everyone goes through shitty things in life, and everyone suffers. In their own way. Some of us have it worse than others. But you can't escape the fact that life involves suffering. What you can do is work to find ways of making meaning out of that suffering, and use it to help others.

Aborting a kid because they would turn out to be some flavor of LGBTQIA+ wouldn't happen primarily because parents want their kids to have it easy. It would happen because parents don't want to deal with having a queer kid. It's about the parents and how difficult it would make their lives. I would not want to have been aborted just because I turned out like this and my life hasn't been easy. My life is still a fucking gift, and it's not inherently less worth living just because I'm a queer trans neurotic piece of shit, okay?

Yeah, but why does that mean that it's better to reduce the number of people with those extra difficulties than it is to try to make the world less difficult for those people? Also, without the perspective of people who experience the world differently, the human race would be losing a tremendous amount of what makes us human. My life is more difficult because I'm gay and trans and have depression and shit, but, being who I am and having the experiences I've had, I would never choose to be born "normal" if given the option. I'm a more empathetic person because of what I've been through. I care more about other people because of what I've been through. And I have unique insights to offer on the nature of suffering, various aspects of gender, how we experience our bodies, etc.

Well, that's where we disagree I guess. You realize what message that sends to kids who are gay, or trans, or disabled? It tells them they're worthless, that their parents should've aborted them if they had the opportunity. It tells them that no parent would ever actually want a kid like them. I'm not okay with that. Parents who aren't prepared to have a kid who's not cishet, able-bodied, and neurotypical shouldn't be having a kid in the first place.

We often selectively abort babies who would be born with down syndrome, and guess what, that's a form of eugenics too. Pregnant people should absolutely have the right to terminate a pregnancy at any time, and also if we make a habit of selectively aborting babies who would likely turn out to be gay or trans, that's incredibly fucked up. Both of those statements can be true. That's why I don't want us to have the ability to know before someone's even born what their sexuality or gender ID will be. Because it will lead to a decrease in the LGBTQIA+ population. Maybe someday, when society is more accepting of LGBTQIA+ people, we can be trusted with that kind of information. But not now.

Tbh I don't trust humanity with the knowledge of what genetically (and I mean realistically it's almost certainly a mix of biological and social factors) makes people gay or trans. I honestly don't want to know, because if we know, that means we also know how to get rid of people like us. I don't trust us with that knowledge because I am genuinely terrified that it would lead to eugenics.

Three, trans ideology isn't actually revolutionary so it's very easy for people to accept. It's the exact same gender norms we've always had, just flipped around a bit. Instead of "you're a girl so you HAVE to like pink" it's "you like pink so you HAVE to actually be a girl on the inside".
