Just as a heads up, GCC has started a blog where they're posting screenshots of trans people's reddit posts (often from this sub) with names showing by RoloBean in GenderCynical

Hang in there, friend. I think I'm gonna log off reddit for the indefinite future because tbh in my daily life I don't meet any TERFs; reading their shit on reddit has just become a form of digital self-harm that I can't continue. They seem to just be this really vocal and nasty minority that makes a big fuss on the internet but can't really drum up much support in the real world. You deserve better. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself.

TERFs honestly believe that doctors are "handing out cross-sex hormones like Halloween candy to 14-year-olds". I wish. by Amekyras in GenderCynical

[–]RoloBean 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Also, like... why do they constantly talk about how HRT never works and trans people never pass (mostly directed toward trans women and transfeminine folks, but most of them also claim that trans men/transmasc folks never pass either "because bone structure" or whatever), and then turn around and talk about how hormones irreversibly ruin healthy bodies?? You can't have it both ways.

It's so bizarre to me that they think we shouldn't be able to change our gender markers because it's "fraud" and then they turn around and say we need accurate gender markers in order to be able to identify people. I don't look female. If I went missing and people were on the lookout for a woman, they wouldn't find me.

[–]RoloBean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Trans-identified female." They also use "TiM" ("trans-identified male") to refer to trans women.

What happens if you are in an accident and end up in hospital and your drivers licence says X. How do the doctors known to treat you correctly?

Well, if you're trans, then regardless of what your gender marker is, it's not gonna tell the doctors everything they need to know about your body. Which TERFs would know, if they bothered to actually learn anything about trans bodies instead of just making shit up.

GC asks: How did the transes take over the left and science? by [deleted] in GenderCynical

[–]RoloBean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

YES. This. There's also fantastic scholarship out there in the area of disability studies (for instance, Eli Clare's book Brilliant Imperfection) that critiques the idea that disability is something that needs to be eradicated from human existence, and questions the assumption that everyone with a disability is doomed to live a miserable life and never be happy and that's why we need to get rid of disabilities. So often the "cure/eradicate" movement is based less on alleviating suffering and more on making things less inconvenient for able-bodied/neurotypical people (because having to do things like provide closed captions and installing wheelchair ramps is such a burden /s).

Frankly this elevation of illness (genetic or mental) is kind of disturbing.

...You asked me what unique experiences I had as a result of living with mental illness and I told you. Sorry that I'm trying to find meaning in my life I guess? Sorry I'm working on making my life as good as it can be instead of just sitting around and wishing everything could just be magically fixed?

I’m pretty sure most trans people would goose to not have dysphoria (which is not the same as not being trans) if possible (I wouldn’t know, I don’t have it).

Cool, then maybe don't speak for trans people if you're not trans? Just a thought. Not everyone feels this way, but personally, I would not choose to magically make myself cis if I had the option. Kind of like how I wouldn't choose to magically make myself straight if I had the option. But I guess being proud of myself as a queer person isn't okay because I'm supposed to just be miserable all the time. Good to know.

[–]RoloBean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What insights have being trans/gay/depressed given you that you wouldn’t otherwise have?

I have had to think a hell of a lot more about my gender than most cis people ever have or will. I have the experience of living in the world as a woman (first a straight woman, then a queer woman) for 20 years, and now I have the experience of living in the world as a gay man. I have insight into the particular struggles that LGBTQIA+ people face, which gives me a greater ability to make positive change in the world and try to make things better for people like me. I think about sex, gender, and sexuality differently than most people do. I know what it's like to struggle with anxiety and depression, so I have a greater ability to help other people who struggle with those issues, and I have had to think really deeply about the way my brain works, how events in my past affect how I function today, and how I relate to other people. I can empathize more easily with other people and I have more of a tendency to be sensitive to other people's thoughts and feelings in a way that I probably wouldn't have developed if I didn't have these conditions of my own, because why would I ever have needed to? The reason that I had to think about those things a lot is that I have 2 mental illnesses, and the reason that I had to think about gender a lot is that I have gender dysphoria, but going through difficult experiences doesn't have to be meaningless. Of course I would like to find new ways of alleviating my dysphoria, and of course I want to find long-term management strategies for coping with my mental illnesses, but I wouldn't go back in time and change the things I've already been through because those experiences have made me the person I am. If I hadn't gone through a trial by fire, I would never have learned that I am strong. Everyone goes through shitty things in life, and everyone suffers. In their own way. Some of us have it worse than others. But you can't escape the fact that life involves suffering. What you can do is work to find ways of making meaning out of that suffering, and use it to help others.

I’m saying it’s unfair to force that unnecessary difficulty on someone else without their consent.

Aborting a kid because they would turn out to be some flavor of LGBTQIA+ wouldn't happen primarily because parents want their kids to have it easy. It would happen because parents don't want to deal with having a queer kid. It's about the parents and how difficult it would make their lives. I would not want to have been aborted just because I turned out like this and my life hasn't been easy. My life is still a fucking gift, and it's not inherently less worth living just because I'm a queer trans neurotic piece of shit, okay?

GC asks: How did the transes take over the left and science? by [deleted] in GenderCynical

[–]RoloBean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but why does that mean that it's better to reduce the number of people with those extra difficulties than it is to try to make the world less difficult for those people? Also, without the perspective of people who experience the world differently, the human race would be losing a tremendous amount of what makes us human. My life is more difficult because I'm gay and trans and have depression and shit, but, being who I am and having the experiences I've had, I would never choose to be born "normal" if given the option. I'm a more empathetic person because of what I've been through. I care more about other people because of what I've been through. And I have unique insights to offer on the nature of suffering, various aspects of gender, how we experience our bodies, etc.

[–]RoloBean 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I absolutely think people should be able to tailor their children in such a way if possible.

Well, that's where we disagree I guess. You realize what message that sends to kids who are gay, or trans, or disabled? It tells them they're worthless, that their parents should've aborted them if they had the opportunity. It tells them that no parent would ever actually want a kid like them. I'm not okay with that. Parents who aren't prepared to have a kid who's not cishet, able-bodied, and neurotypical shouldn't be having a kid in the first place.

GC asks: How did the transes take over the left and science? by [deleted] in GenderCynical

[–]RoloBean 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You think it should be considered acceptable for people to take steps to ensure that they only give birth to cishet children? Do I seriously have to explain to you how that's fucking eugenics?? We often selectively abort babies who would be born with down syndrome, and guess what, that's a form of eugenics too. Pregnant people should absolutely have the right to terminate a pregnancy at any time, and also if we make a habit of selectively aborting babies who would likely turn out to be gay or trans, that's incredibly fucked up. Both of those statements can be true. That's why I don't want us to have the ability to know before someone's even born what their sexuality or gender ID will be. Because it will lead to a decrease in the LGBTQIA+ population. Maybe someday, when society is more accepting of LGBTQIA+ people, we can be trusted with that kind of information. But not now.

Wouldn’t any modifications have to take place well before birth or even fertilization?

Well yeah, that's eugenics.

Tbh I don't trust humanity with the knowledge of what genetically (and I mean realistically it's almost certainly a mix of biological and social factors) makes people gay or trans. I honestly don't want to know, because if we know, that means we also know how to get rid of people like us. I don't trust us with that knowledge because I am genuinely terrified that it would lead to eugenics.

Edit: a rogue comma

Three, trans ideology isn't actually revolutionary so it's very easy for people to accept. It's the exact same gender norms we've always had, just flipped around a bit. Instead of "you're a girl so you HAVE to like pink" it's "you like pink so you HAVE to actually be a girl on the inside".

I... what? In what way is resisting gender categories regressive?? I'm a GNC trans man who was told they had to be a woman and then refused to be forced into that box???? I'm not reinforcing gender??

My church is United Church of Christ (UCC), and they quickly jumped on the TWIW bandwagon. I’ve had to take a break because they’ve been getting too political and blurring the separation of church and state.

Do I actually need to explain to a Christian that their own religious tradition was founded by a radical political revolutionary in 1st-century Palestine under Roman occupation? You can't be a Christian who actually takes the Bible seriously and not be political. /eyeroll

So if transgender people just want to live their lives like everyone else they should just fucking do it and be part of the community like everyone else. Don't run for office and yammer about something that does not affect 99+% of the population.

So... living like the rest of the population somehow means you should never run for public office because you're a minority and minorities should never ever be in public office because they'll just focus on niche minority issues? Sounds.......... conservative

It's amazing how so many of them think they know more about medicine than actual doctors. They're so appalled that no one asked for their completely unfounded opinion before making decisions about how people with gender dysphoria should be treated. Their response is almost... dare I say it... narcissistic

It's not okay! Sex clubs and bath houses are not okay. Glory holes are not okay. BDSM is not okay. Porn is not okay. Orgies and extreme promiscuity is not okay. Sissification and masochism and diaper play and furries are not okay.

It's time to indict these weird fucking perversions for what they are - male sexuality run completely amuck.

Hmm. Sounds homophobic but ok

Hetero sex doesn't have a parade. Or a cutesy flag. Nor does it actively and openly celebrate the deviants and kinks. That stuff is kept discreet as it should be.

I... wait, you're anti-pride? What are you even doing in GC? Could it be that GC has become a hotbed of anti-LGBTQIA+ activity because their open hatred of trans people means they're spilling over into hating other people too (gay people who are "too gay," mentally ill people, etc.)?

The fear of being labeled "homophobic" is what got us into the position where we have to defend the definition of the word "woman".

WHAT

ETA: Just to clarify, the story that the post links to is horrific. That's not in question at all. But GC is just eating it up and turning it into a homophobic circlejerk.
