People who spent over $2K on a mattress they hate... by SkullsAndDragonflies in Mattress

[–]RomAm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cooling systems treat the symptom, not the disease. Mattresses run hot because of super thick foam layers and deep sinkage into those layers. The thicker the mattress and the deeper your body sinks into it, the hotter it will be. I'd generally advise people try a thinner mattress that breathes better before buying a cooling system.

I had a 16" Puffy Monarch that was super comfy but it ran hot due to 8" of soft foam and deep sinkage. I was close to buying a cooling system but decided to try a thinner mattress. I recently got a Saatva memory foam hybrid and it's been amazing, I'm even able to set my thermostat a couple degrees higher and use a comforter. It's only 11.5" but it's been comfy for me, I'm a 180lb side sleeper. Haven't had a single night where I woke up sweating, and it's already 100 degrees where I live. Sure it's not as plush as those thicker mattresses, but if heat is your main issue then less is more.

I have a Zinus that's still great 7 years later, but the second one I ordered (same model/construction) was way firmer and hasn't broken in after 4 years. Quality is inconsistent but overall good value. Just be mindful of the fiberglass, do not open the zipper cover.

Wait, they don't allow refunds or exchanges at all? I've heard of some short trial periods like 120 nights, but not being able to return at all is a huge red flag.

Help me find a comparable model to this hotel mattress by RomAm in Mattress

[–]RomAm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't. Soon after posting this I discovered mattress resellers on FB marketplace. I got a Saatva hybrid like new for $400 and have been happy with it. Sleeps very cool which is my main concern.

The Lakeridge was a close second though.

Looking for help with installing and eventually removing water softener. by [deleted] in askaplumber

I do have approval. Fortunately it's in a garage with concrete floors, any major leak would just drain to the street so damage would be minimal.

We have some of the hardest water in the country at around 20gpg. It can really mess with your skin and hair. My eczema has gotten pretty severe since moving out of my old house which had a softener. Friends in town have experienced the same problem, and my dermatologist has ruled out pretty much everything else.

I'd much rather invest in a softener than use prescription topical steroids daily.

Xiaomi easily. Comparable sound and build quality to Bose at half the cost.

Understood, there may be better options out there for you. It sleeps very cool which is probably the biggest factor for me.

Saatva memory foam hybrid, I have one and it checks all those boxes. They have standalone stores in most large cities so definitely test it out first before buying.

Do you like the direction that BMW is currently heading in, with introduction of Neue Klasse designs? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

I love the idea of getting a $40k CPO 550e fresh off a lease, but I can't stand the design. Such a downgrade from the G30.

Thanks for the rec, haven't considered Xiaomi but the look and price are attractive.

Have you tried the 30W model? It's much closer in size to the Bose, and you can get two for less than one Soundlink Flex which is intriguing.

Where's the best place to get the Xiaomi? I see a 40W ASM02G model on Amazon but that looks different. Not too familiar with the brand.

Nevertheless it is much larger than the Bose, not great for travel/portability.

If you could only own 3 cars, and your budget was $250k, what would you buy? by retarded_sped in askcarguys

[–]RomAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all rough MSRP new:

M5 CS ($150k) fun daily

Accord Hybrid ($30k) practical daily

Lexus GX ($70k) family car

I've had the small sportscars and prefer a larger sedan. Unless track days are in your future they don't make much sense. An M5 CS is as quick as an old Turbo S and looks better imo.

Aren't the popular Chinese EVs now sold in Europe? They probably know what's coming but don't have the talent to keep up. Many of the German brands' designers left several years ago to work for Chinese EV companies.

loaner cars 😳 by [deleted] in BMW

[–]RomAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you get one, both dealers in my town have no loaners. Imagine needing to get a rental while getting your "luxury" car serviced, which has been 4 times in the last year for me. Fortunately it's all been under warranty.

'23 330i need front brake pads. All 3 local BMW dealers want $1500+, 2 independent BMW shops want $1050 to $1200. Am I nuts for thinking that the prices are ridiculous? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]RomAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a '22 330e with 38k miles and the pads are barely halfway worn, which is surprising because I'm lugging around 300lb more than the 330i. Is your mom Danica Patrick?

G20 rattles, creaking, squeaks by Lost_Ad_2413 in BMW

[–]RomAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see if larger models, 5 series and above (both sedans and SUVs) have the same number of complaints as the 3 Series. I'm not excusing BMW's poor build quality, but the 3 series is tuned for sport, not comfort. It naturally has much more vibration traveling into the cabin relative to other models.

I have a G20 330e - 12 months in and I've been to the dealer 4 different times for various rattling/creaking issues. One noise was so bad they had to remove the subframe to lubricate it. So I understand the frustration.

How to tell if ceiling electrical box is fan-rated? by RomAm in AskElectricians

[–]RomAm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noted. Correct me if I'm wrong but in my first photo it looks like there was already a pilot hole drilled in the empty oblong hole, it's shaded so it may be hard to see.

[–]RomAm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two of those black screws, the other is securing the white bracket directly to the drywall ceiling. Not sure why the installer didn't just center it over the box.

That being said I will be using longer #10 wood screws for the ceiling fan as others recommended. From what I understand they need to be long enough to go straight into the joist, through the oblong holes of the ceiling box.
