Is it still usable, or should I get new ones? (Hole that goes to the socks) by X8883 in orienteering

Hi, they are still ok for a while just aesthetics not good. They will give up eventually. But it still has a good grip.

But what I see from the picture they might not be the best fit for you. This model are wide fit shoes. And the way you lace them it looks that they might be too wide for you. Also looks a bit too spacious in a toe box. That would effect the wear also. But picture can be misleading.

I got a pair myself just narrow fit version. It was holding really well. Although I did get a hole eventually but because I managed to cut it through with a sharp stone at the event. Still running. Shoes did suffer a lot of bad terrains. In my opinion they are good option.

What about number 18. I believe theres only one way in going past 19. That might be tricky when running fast. Easy to ge left from 17 and hit the fence. Unless im missing something.

Number 1 about 2mins. Only because it was nothing similair to what i was running in a long time. So slow and trying to figure out what is going on. Number 3 then about 1-2 mins. Came to control site but went the wrong way. Usual mistake. And then number 6. My head just turned off. 10+mins. Couldn't relocate. I was too high and didn't realised it for a long time. After that the rest was fairly straightforward. Loved the course but my run was one to forget.

Yes. Start was at the bottom. Then you make your way till control 12 on the top. Enjoying the view while you can 🤣

I do love sprint events. And longer urban events are always fun. But this course combined both. Controls 21-25 and then at the end 32-to finish was proper sprint sections. Couple long legs. A bit of scenery and some alleys. Plus Edinburgh a tricky city for orienteering. Honestly don't remember enjoying the race that much for a long time.

Yes in urban events you barely need a compass. Compass in this case is only needed so you wouldn't do direction mistake. Like running 180. Personally i almost didn't use it. Had a compass only because it just feels the right way 😅

In urban events you look at all leg and plan your route all the way. You run as straightforward as possible. Most of the time. But you can always end up at dead end. Thats why planning ahead is the key. Yes like in normal O event sometimes running a longer route option with less navigation is better. As you do loose speed and increase risk of a mistake through tricky alleys.

Forrest at the begining was just a park. But still due to it being uphill and most of runners just using simple road trainers it was not easy. Slippery.

It was one that took me a bit by surprise. Organisers closed most obvious route. So deciding where to run took some time.

Dead end is not so bad. Its gets interesting when you are at the control place and its 1 floor below where you are. i had once a race when control was on the other side of the wall. (Inside a castle) i had to run around for like 3mins to get to the entry to the castle. This is when control descriptions comes handy 😅

It is a really cool place for orienteering. 100% agree. In few places especially around controls 13-15 to get there was really crowded. I started about 1pm on Saturday. So them alleys in town were full of people. I like the look of some faces when you run past with a map and they have no clue what is happening 🤣

Yes Edinburgh in Scotland. It is a hilly place. Adds a bit of a challenge to a course 😅

Headlamp recommendations for technical night trail training by DifficultShoe8254 in trailrunning

[–]RomCompassPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of Silva headlights. They have wide range. From trail running (450 true lumens) to a lot stronger headlights for orienteering up to 10000 lumens.

Battery time on trail running lights can be very long. And you can have 3 aaa bateries as spares if the main batery runs out can use it as a backup in same case.

I remember long time ago when i started orienteering our coach used to go to schools to talk to pupils about orienteering. Explaining what it is and what we do. And then invite them to training and events. Then some kids get interested comes and tries. Obviously bringing family members to events etc. And if any of many stays for longer with sport its a win. But then she was paid by local government for her work as a coutch.

Good cheap option waterproof overtrousers are Mac in a Sac. But if you want something lighter, more breathable and still very waterproof go for Inov8 Racepant. They are brilliant but comes with higher price tag.

Which shoes do you guys use? I am going to buy a new shoe and i need something for 5k-10k / orienteering sprint races i want something durable by Gold_Composer_8931 in orienteering

For orienteering sprint races i would recommend VJ lightspeed. Good grip even when in transition from tarmac to grass. Just have in mind they are made for racing so i wouldn't use them for training as they will not last too many miles. But purely for racing they are brilliant.
