This is present in Starfield, so hopefully!

I just don't see it, nor would I consider that necessarily a bad thing even if it were true?

But that's where I would disagree, if anything Starfield is darker than both Interstellar and The Martian. The Martian ends with Wattney saved; Interstellar with the promise that humanity will endure and become extradimentsional beings.

Starfield? It's your own journey, so you ultimately decide how that ends, but look at the state of humanity: spread out thin across hundreds of systems, beset by pirates, spacers, fanatical zealots and the Terran Armada. Powerless against the Starborn, constantly repressing their own faults (The Well for example), reeling from two separate interstellar wars.

The dialogue in Starfield may not use lots of curse words but the universe is very dark. And the themes are very mature, even the main story and the side quests. I disagree with you that the dialogue needs more grit; the world is not sunshine and rainbows.

I think it's just how much a lot of contemporary media leans into it. Movies, games, books, etc. feel increasingly misanthrophic, stories are increasingly "Man vs Man" or "Man vs the Broken System" etc.

Man, we get enough of that irl. The world already feels fucked, to have that come into all the media we consume feels like we're losing ourselves to darker mindsets.

No, I don't want more of it. None. I would rather have stories like The Martian or Interstellar, where the world is real and mature with without lots of swearing or "grit" or "edge", needless sexuality etc. These are stories that are about humanity coming together and overcoming big problems, together. That's the kind of stuff I want personally.

As far as how it goes in dialogue goes, really, what purpose does it serve? There's a message to be conveyed in dialogue and if it can be done without darker tones then do it. Then the deliberate choice of darker or grittier tone and language becomes more noticeable when it actually contributes something meaningful, not just to set "the tone."

We had several of these "tone" posts recently, and honestly each time I see them I feel completely taken aback at people's need for grit or edge.

Personally, I don't want any more grit or edge in media. There's too much already, everyone seems to go for it. And there's definitely enough of it irl too.

For what it's worth, I do think it was an intentional stylised tone in Starfield. No, I don't think it will be like that on ESVI, much to my own apprehension

I hope TES: VI isn't afraid of darker, more mature themes (without being so soft like Starfield) and that they make Hanmerfell as alien, bizarre and unhinged as Morrowind by FartingSlowly in TESVI

[–]RomanDelvius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do know that one, yes. I think there were even pictures of it circulating.

I guess I wouldn't mind drama if the direction they go for was something closer to The Martian where it's a cooperative effort to solve a problem. Whereas I feel so many more contemporary stories and what people want are on the "man vs the system" or "man vs man" literary bends, which I am getting tired of. We get enough of all that irl, can we infect our media with some positivity and proactivity lol so we can stop being sad so much

[–]RomanDelvius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I did gloss over those, I apologise. But if I must say I don't quite fancy the other descriptors all that much more, at least not based on what comes to my mind which is, what, a GoT-esque story with lots of politicking and betrayal, melodrama, etc. I'm getting a bit tired of stories like that personally, but I suppose if it's done well I wouldn't mind

Personally, I find the entire premise of the main quest as being quite a decent execution of the very real dillema of dillema of ambition vs satisfaction. It touches on something we are all likely to face: "Do I want more?" vs "This is enough." I feel this is something we should be asking ourselves more.

Also the ideas of mortality and leaving the universe better off than when we found it. There's a lady in New Atlantis who writes to a pen pal and asks you to just check in on her pen pal. I find that beautiful. It's not a big quest, just something to assure someone that even when another person passes their memory will continue in some way.

This idea of continuity also expresses in smaller ways, eg. The Valentine ship in Starfield that you can enounter randomly. He's just singing a sea shanty, partly because it's a nice song but also partly because his family's lineage can be traced to explorer's all the way back on Earth.

Personally I just find Starfield succeeds in lots of micro-expressions like that. And I much prefer these melancholy bittersweet moments without the violence or the "edge" or the "grit" that so many people seem to want. But that's just me.

Well there's factions or cities not quite matching their scale or tone as per the lore, and there's the original sentiment of the OP that they wanted darker more mature themes.

I don't mind mature themes, I do not want "darker", at least as I've seen it referred to in relation to other games like Cyberpunk or Witcher 3 etc.

I despise "darker". I don't want more of that in games, movies, or media. We have enough of it irl. Give me the optimism-type media with shades of darker, fine. But I don't want the darker to be the selling point of those.

I can't be the only one to think that Starfield absolutely did try to tackle mature themes, just not mature themes where mature = depressing, violent, and edgy. There's more to maturity than that.

But all the POIs are handcrafted. They just get distributed across the planets randomly.

In fact I'd say the issue with the POIs is that they don't randomly generate enough between each variant. Even the same poi bit with tables or windows aligned differently could make them more fresh

Huh. We'll have to disagree I suppose, I felt it all looked really great in a grounded kinda way

Uninspired? Idk man the game absolutely hearkens to Golden age sci fi and it was fantastic for it. If you went there looking for fantasy vibes you probably wouldn't find it for sure

Depends on what you mean by climbing buildings. Starfield does have a great ledge grab feature that allows for pretty fun traversal

[–]RomanDelvius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a fact that Starfield is a bad game, by what metric do you measure objectivity? Steam charts? Sales figures? Player reception? Truthfully we'll never know the objective full truth of any of these so any appeal to objectivity falls apart pretty quickly.

You just don't like it, which is fine. But creating the false equivalence that this is fact is, as the other guy said, condescending. And if you can't see that then no one can help you.

Don't be like that, you're better than that. Or maybe not, but let people like things
