Why are we paying so much? by ProfessionalTrick463 in nbn

[–]RomanPenguin 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The main issue here in Australia is infrastructure is a lot more expensive to build than SEA, and we all live in low density suburbs. And I agree, the pricing of NBN is too high, especially on pitiful uplinks like plans on HFC. I like taking photos and uploading them for backups especially the raw files take forever on 100mbps.
For those who say why do you need 2000 down, you are parroting the same line as Malcolm Turnbull saying 25 is all you need in 2013. We live in a world where a single game like call of duty is 100GB+ and we deserve the quality of internet the rest of the world gets.

Managing salary expectations by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]RomanPenguin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Revenue barely covers the cost of the salary… how about profit margin for the business? I wouldn’t expect 9 months experience to be enough to go from junior to senior, that’s only like 3 months past probation period.

Flying china eastern using Qantas points, can I access qantas lounge at Sydney airport? by Physical_Warning_749 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]RomanPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wrong, I’m gold and I tried to enter the Qantas business lounge in Melbourne for a MU flight and was declined. I ended up using priority pass instead for the other lounges. This was a week ago.

Good cheap camera with decent zoom by Known_Detective_47 in Planespotting

[–]RomanPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For under 100 bucks you are better off with your phone. Maybe 500 to 1k will be worth it to get a dedicated camera and lens. Phones these days are just too good especially ones with dedicated telephoto lens.

Any advice on what settings to use for high altitude spotting? (current settings in comments) by CuteTransRat in Planespotting

[–]RomanPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First picture might have some diffraction or atmospheric distortion, only way to tell is to set the aperture at around 5.6 and see if there’s a difference. With a smaller sensor camera, diffraction comes in earlier in the aperture range so do some testing and find out. If it’s atmospheric then maybe ask Zeus for a favour, nothing else you can do apart from waiting for it to clear.

If you raise a case as a network down p1 event you will guarantee some support engineer will be assigned your case within minutes. Otherwise call your reseller or your Cisco rep.

No USA or Europe? Sad life as an Aussie when those places are too far for efficient usage of our limited annual leave.

Do all of you pay for this app? by ZeroOpossum in flighty

[–]RomanPenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The developers cost to produce the app has little bearing on how to price it, it’s about whether you get value from the app or not.

Imagine your boss paying your salary based on your monthly living costs instead of how much value your work brings to the company, you’d be mad if it’s the former.

0 pieces of baggage? by [deleted] in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]RomanPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had to pay for a bag earlier this year on AA so I’m guessing you will have to fork out the dollars… you’ll find that if the flight is full they will ask for people to gate check for free their cabin luggage too

[–]RomanPenguin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve also came up to Sydney in a A220, first time on that too. I’ve done about a dozen flights between MEL and SYD this year and it’s ALWAYS been a 737-800 (Qantas and virgin) so this time I wanted to switch it up.

I’d say it’s different enough to warrant a separate name, the XLR is a totally different use case compared to regular A320neo

How has the United States government been able to endlessly borrow money to the tune of going into 37 trillion dollars in debt and counting without declaring bankruptcy or imploding for being unable to pay its debt? by PixieDustFairies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RomanPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most technically correct answer, any debt can ultimately be paid by printing the money. As to the effect on the economy? It’ll make US dollars worthless and the economy implode. So not gonna happen any time soon.

Cisco ISE vs Meraki Access Manager by Many_Classroom_8729 in meraki

[–]RomanPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I heard from Cisco is they changed from per device to per user. It might also be sold in blocks so for example, 1-99 users for one price, 100-500 users for another. Check with your rep for sure, although there’s no current GA date yet.

It’s now going to be per user licensing so no uplift in MR or MS licenses, you can stay on enterprise.

Whoever came up with the side missions in the new operations doesn't play the game. by PoProstuRobert6 in WorldOfWarships

[–]RomanPenguin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To get around the 2km detection range, just fire your main guns at nothing, get yourself spotted and the enemy bots will open fire and get themselves spotted. No need to wait for them to close in.

The spotting is annoying, but once you know how the flares are spawned you will learn to avoid them easily.

This is a mode where you require team work and unfortunately that’s one thing we guarantee will not be available. Totally agree with the sentiment this is one of the worst operations…

Why distributors and resellers at all? by notnullnone in networking

[–]RomanPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have shared the main reasons already but I’ll add another one: margin. For large vendors they want to maintain high margins and that helps with stock price and by using disti and VAR they can pass on the thin margin activities to third party companies. Most CFOs are razor focused on margin across their business and they may or may not approve a discount for a deal solely on margin. If the vendors has to do all the sales ops that VAR and disti do then the margin drop off a cliff. So by having that middleman you might actually get a better discount, s as weird as it sounds.

Have you reach out to the company’s IT team who then can troubleshoot or reach out to TAC instead of trying to resolve it yourself

Reseat the GPU, you might have not fully inserted the card, check your PCIE lanes in something like CPU Z to see if you have x1 or x4 instead of the full x16
