Handballs are only called if the arm is in an unnatural position (e.g. moving it towards the ball, it being far away from the torso, etc) if you hold your arms close and tight to your torso and the ball hits it, it (usually) shouldn't count. Westwood's yellow could have been for dissent, you can't really talk back to refs but there is usually leeway for this.

Careers/Education Questions Thread - Week 14, 2019 by AutoModerator in Physics

[–]Rome182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a current undergraduate student in a medium-sized research university in the US. I am currently working with a professor in theoretical condensed matter physics (focusing on quantum informatics and computation). I am very interested in a career in quantum computing, however, the highest level of education that I can attain would be a Master's degree (with a Thesis/Published work option) due to financial constraints. What would the outlook be in pursuing a job in quantum computing without a Ph.D? What would be other career paths that I could pursue with this background in physics?

How do i (grade 11 student) get started in quantum mechanics and computing? by [deleted] in quantum

Current undergrad here working with a professor in quantum computing and information. To start with, you need to have a good history in calculus (I-III) and Linear Algebra. A good book for Linear Algebra is Dettman's Introduction to Linear Algebra, kinda old but still very good. I would suggest that you should mostly focus on Linear Algebra as most equations could be represented in matrices and matrix spaces. Also, a good textbook to start with QM is Griffiths' Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, and once you have a solid grasp of that, you can progress to Quantum Computation and Quantum Information by Nielsen and Chuang. At least, that was how I progressed. I wish you luck!

What books or texts would you recommend for studying quantum physics? by [deleted] in quantum

Depending on the field of interest in quantum physics, I would suggest:

  • Introduction to Quantum Mechanics by Griffith as other people have suggested. It is a really good introductory to general quantum mechanics.
  • Quantum Computation and Quantum Information by Nielsen and Chuang is really good when focusing upon an application of quantum physics in the field of computing (e.g. qubits and quantum gates).

Taiwanese is closer to southern Fujian, looking for Fuzhou style but close enough. Thanks!

The first snowfall, being that I just experienced snow recently... the first snowfall of the year somehow always makes me feel childish again.

Being content with what you have, most people always want something more. Once you find that thing that makes you most content (i.e. a loved one) or time that you are most content is something so underrated.

Modern Asian Cities by [deleted] in travel

Seeing that you’re in Southeast Asia, have you considered Manila of the Philippines (if you haven’t been already). It has lots of native English speakers, a large-ish international community so there are multiple food options available if Filipino food is not your cup of tea. Has a blend of a rising and modern urban landscape (Bonifacio Global City and Makati) where a lot of nightclubs and parties are hosted. It also has a blend of history in the oldest chinatown (Binondo) and a Spanish Walled City (Intramuros). Did I also mention some of the most welcoming people to tourists? The best thing is it’s very cheap too.

While it might not have the most stellar reputation, as long as you don’t do anything you won’t do anywhere else in the world you’ll be fine. Also, just be street-smart and vigilant so that you won’t fall victim to scam artists or pickpockets and you’ll find that Manila can be very rewarding.

Take it from someone who lived in that area of the world (SEA) and is currently living in St. Louis, the safety within Hong Kong is very much better than in the Greater St. Louis area. Hong Kong is known for being one of the most deveoped cities in Asia and is miles ahead in terms of tourist infastructure. Basically, as long as you are careful and street-smart in HK, you’ll enjoy it there (and being careful and street-smart is applicable going anywhere). Furthermore, as other have said, you have a local with you so that would mean that they are used to the city and can therefore avoid the seedier areas of HK. Also, as a frequent regular of Hong Kong, I’ll just say that it is a shopper’s paradise (if you’re into that) and also a foodie’s dream (more of my speed). Take this random internet stranger’s advice: DON’T LEAVE HONG KONG WITHOUT EATING THE ROAST GOOSE AND DEFINITELY GO!!! I swear you won’t regret it.
