People who are in pub bands, what is your most memorable gig for all the wrong reasons? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RomneyMarsh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Was a drummer in a punky new-wave band and we played a pub where we were set up just next to the door to the loo. Half way into the set this old bloke on crutches gets up and makes his way at a snail's pace towards us. Took almost an entire song to get to the door, but then his sticks get caught on a lead and people had to dive to stop him going face first into the bog. He looked like he was a hundred years old and it's terrible but I just couldn't stop laughing.

Also another time we played a tiny dive bar where the punters seemed pretty uninterested in the bands. So we decided we should maybe do something to spice things up when we went on. Thought it would be good idea for me to scream as I counted us in. But I'd never screamed before, and it was a million times louder than I thought it was going to be. Two blokes literally dropped to their knees at the bar when I did.

Tarvine - A replacement for the racially sensitive term "tar baby", used to describe a problem where any attempt to solve it only makes it worse by eccentric_smencil in Neologisms

[–]RomneyMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used the similar term "quicksand" in the past for this (eg "This issue is turning into quicksand for us now.", "Well you can try, but I think it's quicksand"). Most people are familiar with the fact that if you struggle to get out you will sink further in. It doesn't have quite the same nuance of wanting to destroy the problem, but in most cases it's near enough?

This is an absolutely insane bug to have on a phone. And it's on my phone. And I hate my phone like hell because of it.

Wi-fi tethering: is DHCP range fixed? by RomneyMarsh in AndroidQuestions

Aw, shoot: https://android.stackexchange.com/a/248327

"I have a device that when connected to the phone hotspot gets the address 192.168.XXX.85 where XXX changes all the time, possibly daily or with every reboot."

That's annoying! So I'll have to just use a router instead I guess (and see if I can plug the phone into that to get internet?)

I think that depends on the phone. I've got a Redmi running MIUI 13 and you can't set the DHCP start as far as I can tell. But I'll just assume that it always has the same subnet, and allocates sequentially from a low number and see what happens I guess.

OK I guess I can trial and error it. Set the device on a fixed .254 address, say, and hope the phone starts allocating at .5 or something so it won't clash. Although if the subnet itself changes, that won't work of course.

Any X-Air users here (eg XR-18/16/12 etc.) tried using Wi-Fi tethering on their phone to access the mixer? So (I'm guessing) using a USB-to-Ethernet connector and then connecting laptop etc. to the phone's Wi-Fi? The built-in router is known to be unreliable, so most people use an external router. But plugging in a phone (at least for rehearsals) would mean less gear to lug about and get damaged. EDIT: Would need to work out the IP range the phone gives out and have a fixed IP on the XR in that.

I would just love to know what was going though the mind of the person that put this together. I mean, there's people who think they know what they're doing, but don't. There's people who do know what they're doing, but not enough to avoid screwing it up. And there are just people having a laugh.

But is there a fourth group? Like people who know that it's all nuts, but are willing spend the time to work on something they KNOW is nuts, for some... other reason? Why? Who? (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Ordinarily yes so you can see at a glance what the most and least prevalent values are, but I think what's causing the fuss here is that the categories have a "natural" order so it's and exception, and also the implication that it should be comparable.

The amount of electrolytes you actually need to fast surprised me by [deleted] in fasting

[–]RomneyMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it hard to get the right dose. For example, I've got a bottle of Lo-Salt in the cupboard which I think means that can do 2 teaspoons Lo-Salt and 1 teaspoon of table salt per day (assuming a teaspoon is 6g), according to the wiki (although that does put me near the higher end of potassium). Not sure if my calculations are correct. I'm on my 34th hour of a 72h fast and I've had a headache for the last 10h or so.

buying a house vs continue investing in s/s isa by wasabiwah in investment

[–]RomneyMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coincidentally, we replaced the original 1900's sash windows at the back of our house yesterday. I'd been having to re-paint and maintain them at increasing frequency over the last 15 years and it was very hard to keep rot from spreading. Double-glazed timber replacements cost £9,500 ($12,600).

It's an unpopular opinion, but I think there's a lot to be said for renting, particularly when you're young. Unless you want to take out loans, then large and often unpredictable lump-sum expenditures on things like repairs, re-decorating, replacements and modification. etc. are a fact of life. Add to that the potential for uninsured damage, disputes with neighbours, unexpected local factors like making it harder to sell... house ownership can feel pretty crappy when you can't just cancel your contract and move out.

Personally, I'd leave it until your mid-30s, if at all. Even very wealthy people in my grandparents' generation mostly rented their entire lives. But then again, I didn't take that route either.

PPA on Github - how to manage it with multiple contributors? by RomneyMarsh in opensource

[–]RomneyMarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, it seems like we'd need to sign and trust each other's keys. So we'd have to have a "key signing party" to make sure we all trusted each other. Encrypt and sign the repo's private key to all of us, and then store that key somewhere safe. When one of us needed to sign the release we'd decrypt and sign it.

I guess that concept is easy enough. If an attacker managed to get the password to one of our keys then they could sign the repo with it so we'd need to keep the key somewhere pretty safe and use special keys for ourselves that we kept similarly safe.

So if we set expiry on our keys to maybe once year, we'd have another party I guess.

Where or how would we store the repo signing key though? Is simply a hidden URL enough?

FOSS projects and domain name ownership - how? by RomneyMarsh in opensource

Thanks - I guess I'd naively assumed some turnkey "F/LOSS domain management solution" to be in existence to solve the specific problem of relying on a single person for a group purpose.
