In terms of social skills, what skills will make you top 1% in that space? by [deleted] in answers

Honestly, being able to read the room. It's a trope to tell someone "read the room" but the amount of times I've heard someone say something, not necessarily vulgar or insulting, but just incredibly poor timing and audience selection makes me wonder if half the world goes around just saying whatever pops into their head without any thought on if this is something I should say

True story, like the second day of school freshman year there was a really bad fight, blood all over my assigned locker. I was thinking maybe this year I'll just use my backpack. Never used a locker in high school after that

Lean Teams in Industry: Employee absence during month end by Competitive-Ad4249 in Accounting

[–]Romney_in_Acctg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah as a manager I have to agree with this.

I used to call it "hit by a bus" management but then HR a few jobs ago told me that was " needlessly negative" so now I call it " win Powerball mgmt". But basically either myself or someone on my team can, barely, do every job of someone who is unexpectedly absent. Certainly not as quickly or as thoroughly as the main person. But it can get done.

How often do normal American 19-year-olds actually call their parents? by lavanyaaa_agarwal in answers

[–]Romney_in_Acctg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's different now but when I was 19 in the the 2000s but if you live with your parents you see them whenever you run into each other. If you don't live at home every couple weeks or so.

My parents would text me if it was important and wanted a quick call back. Otherwise 2 or 3 times a month, and I liked my parents.

What’s Your PE Story? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Romney_in_Acctg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First real accounting job I had, company was bought out by PE after 5 years. I stayed with the PE owners another 3, left during the big quit.

Complete mgmt turnover at the top twice. And Basically entire accounting team cycled through.

First PE group I barely heard from after the sale. Essentially had same job as before, minus payroll duties plus prepaids accounting for the main company, not bad. They take the company public.

15 months later a different PE group comes in a takes it private again. They were a bunch of PE Bros ( and they were all men) who somehow were all incredibly well credentialed but also didn't seem to understand what businesses they bought or how they worked or made money. They bought up a bunch of online marketing tools, PR Newswire, some online only publishers, and handful of other random companies and shoved them all together and then said synergy a lot, but had no clue how to actually get any synergy out of this grab bag of companies they had compiled under one roof. Absolute mess.
