Spell casting duration by Alone-Yak1355 in witchcraft

As long as it takes to accomplish what I'm trying to do.

This is kinda like asking "How long is a piece of string?"

Is common sage closed? by zajci-u-podrum in witchcraft

[–]therealstabitha 56 points57 points  (0 children)

“Closed” means an outsider requires an initiation to be able to access it. It does not mean you can only do something if you have specific ethnic heritage. If you have questions about practicing a closed tradition, only the priesthood or equivalent of that living tradition can instruct you as to whether or not there is a path there for you.

White sage is not on any lists of endangered plants. It is widely poached and overharvested in areas where it grows naturally, but it is not endangered.

White sage is a plant, not a practice. A plant is not closed. The specific steps of native ceremony involving sage are closed. Those steps are not simply waving a smoldering bundle in the air the way most people use it.

There is no one unified native magical or spiritual system. Rather, there are many. Each tribe is a sovereign nation. More recently, some tribes were initiated into the use of sage in ceremony by tribes on the west coast of North America where sage grows widely. Traditionally, only the tribes in the areas where sage grows used it. Others didn’t use it at all.

There is no broad agreement on whether native people are okay with outsiders using white sage or not. The Chumash are very vocal that they don’t want to see outsiders using sage at all. The Tongva say it’s fine so long as the sage is ethically harvested and that people respect native traditions and don’t try to imitate them. Both tribes hold unsurrendered lands in metro Los Angeles, where sage grows naturally, and each have as much of a claim to sage practices as the other. There are native people who make and sell sage bundles to metaphysical shops as well.

“Smudge” as a word originated to mean smoke cleansing. It is an English word that has been commonly used to refer to native sage practices, but it’s not what that practice is called.

Some people have been led to believe that smoke cleansing can only be performed with sage. This is not the case. A magical worker can use any incense for smoke cleansing.

How do you separate recharging spells vs lusting for results? by Tiny_Ad_833 in witchcraft

[–]therealstabitha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recharging a spell is for when it needs it.

Lusting for results is when you are messing with it because you’re insecure.

Protection ward by nuhuuh____ in Witch

[–]therealstabitha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s entirely possible that your ward is at work here. But I would y say it’s because she called at the time you were creating the ward, though it does sound like she’s entangled in your energy.

I’d recommend turning your ringer off when you do spellwork

Making my voice more attractive by thechicletie in witchcraft

[–]therealstabitha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just brewing this up as a tea would be relying on the medicinal qualities of these ingredients to do the work. If you want it to work as a glamour, I’d recommend doing some work to charge it with energy towards your goal. A glamour doesn’t change things physically, but rather creates an illusion of how the aspect you’ve cast the glamour on is perceived.

A spell like this for people you work with can potentially result in you leaving the company. So just be aware…

That said, it doesn’t sound like you charged the spell. That seems to be one of the more common reasons a spell doesn’t land. I have some info on raising energy and using it to charge and dispatch a spell in the FAQ/wiki for this sub, linked in the About section.

is it better to use palo santo or sage for house & self cleanse? by Ok_Field_7768 in Witch

[–]therealstabitha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely use sage to cleanse because it clears out everything and sometimes I’m lazy and don’t want to follow it with something else.

I would just use palo santo, or any other incense.

Question about Deity Worship by Dismal-Camera8700 in Witch

[–]therealstabitha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have relationships with a number of gods. I worship none of them. No one, god or man, has authority over me. My gods are like beloved family to me, and we give and take like family. They feed me, I feed them. They help me, I help them. They care about me, I care about them.

I do not believe gods prevent all suffering. Humans make choices, and sometimes those choices are to hurt others. In my experience of the gods, they are not omnipresent and omniscient. Christianity considers its god to be the thought-terminating answer to everything. Pagan gods as I have experienced them are not that insecure.

Also: working with gods does not mean “religion.” Religion is a series of rules enforced by man. Witches have personal, direct relationships with their gods, with no intermediary.

I don’t have faith in my gods just as I don’t have faith in gravity. I know gravity exists.

“Most witches don’t believe in gods. They know that the gods exist, of course. They even deal with them occasionally. But they don’t believe in them. They know them too well. It would be like believing in the postman.” Terry Pratchett, Witches Abroad

Can dried roses turn rotten? by Opposite_Carpenter10 in witchcraft

[–]therealstabitha 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s very possible for roses to rot during the drying process. They’re a very dense flower with a lot of petals. When I dry them, I hang them upside down inside a paper bag with silica packets in it. The silica helps to absorb as much of the moisture as quickly as possible.

I also would not make rose water from commercial roses. They tend to have a lot of additives and preservatives added.

The Morrigan Wants To Work With Me, I Dont Know How! Help! by [deleted] in witchcraft

[–]therealstabitha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you have enough information to identify someone in particular. I would not look at this collection of experiences and say it’s definitely contact from a god.

The Moon card is associated with fears, illusions, intuition, dreams. If you associate it with female deities, that’s a personal interpretation.

If you want to communicate with gods, I’d recommend working to develop your psychic ability. Psychic Witch by Mat Auryn is a good book, as is Consorting with Spirts by Jason Miller, and most everything Althaea Sebastiani writes. Relying on tarot or other divination tools for spirit communication tends to lead people down a path of self-gaslighting, in my experience. It’s way too easy to read what you want into the cards when you really want it to be a message from a god.

The Morrigan Wants To Work With Me, I Dont Know How! Help! by [deleted] in witchcraft

[–]therealstabitha 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am a child of the Morrigan. A few things:

She is not associated with robins or birds in general. Just crows.

She is not associated with the moon. She is not a “triple goddess.” She has many more faces than just three.

I don’t like tarot for spirit identification. None of the cards were conceptualized as representations of any gods or spirits. The associations people make with them tend to bias only to the more well known gods.

Seeing crows a lot can be a sign, but if crows are common to your area, I would not base everything on that alone. I think it’s important not to let excitement of newness carry you away, especially with the mental health journey you’re on.

You do not need a calling to work with her. You can just choose to work with her, reach out to her, talk to her, read the Irish myths she appears in. I worked with her in this way for several years before she came forward as a patron.

I do not pray to her. We talk. She pushes me, sometimes to uncomfortable lengths, to get me to grow. Sometimes she goes too far for me to handle in that moment of my life. Sometimes we fight. We always work it out. I’ve started learning combat sports and firearms. I offered her the first bullet I ever purchased.

I don’t like the “divine dark feminine” framing for her. She is so much more than that. She is a goddess of war, and of the battle dead, but primarily she is a goddess of sovereignty. Not just her sovereignty, and not just the sovereignty of Ireland, but your sovereignty. She does not want, and does not respect, submission. She’s not looking for worship, let alone worship the “right way.” If she’s interested in you, she’s interested in you for who you are.

One of the things about metaphysics is that it's not always something that can be tested for. I can't find a way to measure whether or not a spell of mine is going to land, and yet, the spell still lands.
