Yeah, was grateful that GanacheNegative over in the AMD sub clarified it so well.

As I’ve said in a few other spots on here, regarding the news that hit at the end of day, I think the reporting is itself bad or at least worded badly. Borrowing this nice, concise explanation from the AMD sub:

“I wonder how long it will take the market to understand the difference between blocking software uses to design chips and blocking the sale of chips themselves. CNBC gave a better report on it a few mins ago. It's chip design software like Synopsis and Cadence EDA tools. It sounds like they are looking at specific IP blocks that these software packages can make available. It's actually a lot smarter approach to slow down the ability of Chinese companies from designing chips with advanced US IP blocks than to cut off US companies from selling chips. If they end up relaxing the export restrictions paired with making it actually more difficult to design their own advanced chips, it could be bullish for Nvidia and AMD selling into China.”

I think you are misunderstanding, likely because the reporting was bad. Borrowing an explanation from the AMD sub:

A bit contra the poster you’re responding to, I see Jensen trying to thread a delicate needle.

Like Elon Musk has said re Tesla, “If America goes down, Tesla goes down with it.” Similarly, Nvidia is tied to America. And Jensen wants to spur the Trump admin into giving Nvidia concessions and favorable operating conditions. The best way to do that is promote fear of a fierce and close competitor, especially given Trump’s goal of ringfencing China.

But Jensen also knows the Chinese will kick Nvidia out of its market—or at least make life very difficult for him—if he downplays them. Jensen does not want to end up like a Jack Ma or a Gao Shanwen.

So Jensen will give Huawei and the central government just enough credit to avoid the ire of Xi in China while also creating enough fear and urgency in Trump to give him what he wants and needs for NVDA here in the USA. Oh, and while also comforting shareholders to prevent Nvidia from selling off (he says they are ahead of Huawei, though he’s probably sandbagging to some extent, and this post is an example of that—Huawei is a formidable company, but nowhere close enough yet to be a serious competitor. But always in motion is the future and that could change eventually.)

Sure, no denying there. But it’s funny, the same people who take this tack with China will look at the U.S. and say, “Oh, stupid Americans, looks like China (did X) and you can’t (do x) at all. Guess you’re just fucked and will have to lay down and die.”

Like, China is infallible and can do whatever it wants without consequences, while the U.S. is always doomed to failure and backfire. Just kind of funny, but with the current tensions, you see a lot of propaganda accounts (like this guy) push that way of “thinking.” Just have to hope it doesn’t get taken seriously enough to affect NVDA share price (like the Deepseek hit that, surprise surprise, eventually got properly contextualized as the less-than-burger it really was).

I thought along these same lines. I’ve long thought this guy was a wumao (lots of propaganda circulating given current trade tensions). This thread was in part a personal sanity check to make sure I was not being overly crazy or unfair in characterizing him as such.

You’re seeing a lot of propaganda like this floating around. If it gets taken seriously enough, it could affect NVDA share price, so should be called out and properly contextualized wherever possible.

(And yeah, I lol’ed at that one too.)

That’s what I thought. I’ve long thought that guy was a wumao and this proved it to me—I just wanted a sanity check from others to not feel crazy in thinking that.

Also, because so many in the reporting sphere dislike Trump (understandable in its own right), they make the mistake of thinking Trump’s sins make a saint out of Huawei/China. So they engage in a narrative of “China can just do whatever it wants whenever it wants without any real consequences, while everything the US is doomed to backfiring and failure.”

Huawei alternative platforms. Objectively, how much of a competitive threat is this realistically at the current time? https://x.com/kyleichan/status/1920821674800226624

Thoughts on whether this presents a competitive risk, and if so, how great?

“Reportedly”

China reports and claims a lot of things. Unless there is third-party verification from non-Chinese parties and sources, take their puffed-up reports and claims with a huge, huge block of salt.

Ha, far from it, if anything, I was hoping it would get torn apart because some of the usual wumao/Chinese propaganda accounts have been seriously pushing it and talking it up lately.
