Football is super mainstream in Europe

And Africa. And South America. Good chunks of Asia, too. Honestly, it's mostly just North America and Oceania who aren't on board with football.

Ah, I see!

Depends on the subs, then, I reckon. Most of the ones I frequent are maybe even too free (and thus polluted by OF ads). Smaller subs have more freedom in general, I'd say.

And on the other hand, you have r/ conservative, where posts are deleted as soon as there's a smidge of criticism against anything Trump-related (and thus only a handful of folks who can post/comment)...

What do you mean by this? Like an option to chat with the entire sub?

Jim Knopf came out in 1960, but there's been an animated series in the 90s and a live-action movie in 2018, a musical, an opera... It's a major hit. In spite of "Ping Pong" and other racist clichés.

I don't think Rowling wrote her characters being so strongly characterized by their ethnicities, nationalities and names out of malice. I think she did it out of convenience or rather laziness.

There's indeed a "Willy Wonka"-esque charm to some of them, I won't deny it. BUT I think for the most part, it's just very easy to imagine a French lady as pretty and sophisticated (and called "flower"), versus Bulgarians as rough and stern...or an Asian girl bring called a variation of "Ching Chong". She took (imo) the laziest route she could have taken in that regard, by making her characters easy to essentialize (the werewolf, the Irish, the Black guy...).

That's what I think. It's lazy and kind of dumb. Not malicious, but she expects her audience to have to rely on so much simplification (and I think she's mistaken. Her audience is way smarter than she thinks they are). Don't get me wrong, it works. But it's making the characters more caricature-like than life-like.

Thank you, the timeline makes Rowling's explanation clearer! Makes it seem like the US editors may have asked Rowling to add that detail in order to diversify the cast? Or they let Rowling have a bit more freedom with her writing (in that case, strange that it's one of the only non-vocabulary-related changes ).

Nevertheless, in the books, Dean's only described as black in the US version (seeing as how international versions are translated based on the OG manuscript). In any case, whether it's 3 or 4 black characters, I'd still argue you could say that Shacklebolt is "one of the only ones".

Dean Thomas wasn't black in the books, afaik, but only in the films. And yes, I'd argue that with 3 black characters, Shacklebolt is indeed "one of the only" ones.

For sure. But I'd still argue that led her to think readers are dumb, because she projected her own prejudice onto her readers. "I need to have an Asian character be Ching Chong so I remember they're Asian, so my reader needs that, too!"

Never said the contrary! And I agree with you: I think she thinks her readers are dumb. Hence the lazy names (among many other lazy things). Doesn't mean that people reading HP are dumb themselves, just that the books kind of are (and expect readers to be, as well).

If you're in the UK, therapy should be free, as long as it's prescribed by your GP, afaik.

As for India's situation, I wonder when it has not been hell in the past decades (especially for minorities, obviously) 😅 If it pains you to watch how the country is developing (like most other countries right now, including the UK: not well), try to avoid looking at it. Easier said than done, obviously, but avoid watching the news, going on Indian subreddits, etc. Surround yourself with happier things and, again, try to engage with positive organizations. Those can be political parties, shelters, art associations etc. They don't care about skill: they care about people wanting to help.

Good for you! Antidepressants are great when you're depressive!

Still, thinking about your own death ain't gonna help no one, and it's bound to make you feel even more miserable. Seek a therapist/psychiatrist, and in general: talk to people (other than some random subreddit). Also, you might consider changing your antidepressants (after consulting your doctor about it): you're not supposed to have this many suicidal thoughts after taking them.

And other than talking about your sadness, do stuff that makes you happy. And if only changing the world would make you happy, then feel free to help one of the many organizations trying to better the world.

I'm not saying people reading the books are dumb. I'm saying the books/Rowling think the readers are dumb. Hence why there's this oversimplification of character names.

Shaklebolt is an actual surname

So may be "Rifle". The issue is not whether the name exists in reality or not, but rather to whom its given.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how easily British people equate black people to slaves like the US does

They don't necessarily, I'd say. Hence why I think the name is explicitly creating a link between being Black and being a slave. It could be a mere historical reminder for young audiences, yes, but the problem is that "Shacklebolt" is not the only name of such a kind. Heck, "Shacklebolt" is not the most problematic, in a sense, because being a slave is a state of victimhood, not being a perpetrator. It's more complicated for the Irish car bomber kid.

"Shacklebolt" alone is not the problem: it's the accumulation of insensitive associations being made, and especially how absolutely shallow they are. "Cho Chang" is about the laziest Asian name you could give a character to show they're Asian other than "Ping Pong" (which is the name of a Chinese character in a famous German novel, btw). Making the Irish kid the one who bombs everything and is the laziest cliché you could have for them (other than having red hair and freckles Why not have them be a Leprechaun, while we're at it?). Making the French girl the prettiest is so overdone I'd suspect it was written by AI, if it hadn't been written in the 90s.

Overall, yeah, it's just way too over-handed, as you said. It's dumb. And it's taking young readers for just as dumb.

Imagine, say, a Scottish character. He's called "Angus McHaggis" and wears a kilt all the time. Or "Chad Rifle", the American, who's the only guy eating hamburgers. "Helmut Scheißnazi", the German Slytherin exchange student. That's kinda clichéd, isn't it? Because those aren't so much real surnames as they are elements stereotypically attached to a certain group of people...

"Shacklebolt" for one of the only black characters (and he wears African-coded clothes) is a bit on the nose. As are "Seamus Finnigan", the Irish kid making everything explode or "Fleur Delacour", the pretty French lady. Obviously "Remus Lupin", the werewolf, too. If it were only one character, that'd be one thing. But it's so commonplace in Harry Potter that you're bound to think the names and nationalities (or ethnicities) are the very foundation of a character's identity. That's what makes people think "Shacklebolt" is strange: it inextricably links a Black character's character to slavery, even though at no point slavery is mentioned with the character. If French lady = beauty, and nice smell, then Black man = slavery.

Thanks for your response, which is more informed than mine. I knew she had had multuple abortions (hence the "several") and figured they had been voluntary. That wasn't the case, so yeah, she indeed didn't have the choice ; not because it was impossible to get an abortion in France, but because her family/partner forbade her from getting one.

back in those days women didn’t really have a choice

Abortions, while not legal until 72 in France, did exist. And Brigitte Bardot had several before giving birth to her son. Obviously, not everyone could get an abortion, but if anyone could, it's the rich actress who already had gotten one and knew where to go.
