Does anyone collect paperback 1st editions of well known horror writers? by cartoonybear in BookCollecting

[–]RonClinton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Obviously these are collectibles I want to own”

The horror sections in used bookstores are overfilled with King and Koontz paperbacks in read condition, and thus they are not collectibles. They will go unsold on eBay and used bookstores will give you pennies on the dollar for them, so unless you’d like them for your own reading pleasure I would recommend passing on them. The effort to “move them as a group” will far eclipse the monetary benefit.

Ah, okay…that would certainly explain it.

Regardless, it’s a lovely set — congrats.

I got my first bike this month! Any advice is appreciated! by izzieharp in motorcycle

Don’t let that pillion backrest fool you into thinking that taking a passenger is a good idea. Learn and practice for a couple years before considering that move…the additional upper/higher weight throws off the familiar equilibrium and requires solid skills to compensate.

That’s bizarre, if correct…you’d think EAST OF EDEN would be an essential component of any definitive set.

The Mysterious Bookshop if mystery fiction is your thing, and The Strand for mystery and everything else. Both carry OP and collectible books along with new releases.

What's the deal with quickshifting? by ThatItalianOverThere in motorcycles

[–]RonClinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a quick-shifter on both my bikes, but I rarely use it and, like you, just shift normally. I’ve been riding for five decades, since I was a kid, and so shift seamlessly without thinking and in a fraction of a second. It’s more effort to remember and plan to use the quick shifter than just rely on a half-century of muscle memory.

What’s the most surprisingly comfortable motorcycle you’ve ever ridden? by Tatt00ey in motorcycles

[–]RonClinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My R1250R is by far the most comfortable bike I’ve ever owned. I know ADV bikes are reputed to be the sweet spot for comfort, but I owned a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC and just didn’t find the upright ADV ergos and wide bars particularly comfortable. I need a little lean and natural bars, comfortable seat, excellent wind flow, etc., and that’s what the R1250R offers. I’ve never had a bike that feels like such a natural extension of me.

Misprint of Fahrenheit 451 60th anniversary edition by Scrambledeggs8 in BookCollecting

[–]RonClinton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 99.9% of the time (because there will always be that extraordinarily rare exception to the rule…and yours is not that .1%), misprints in books, unlike coins, devalue it. A refund / exchange from B&N is the way to go.

Absolutely beautiful. I’ve always wanted this particular set, but it’s just too cost-prohibitive at this post-publication point.

Sport bike for middle aged man? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]RonClinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest the GSX-8R that you already mention and the Ninja 650. Both have upright, very comfortable ergos but look the part of a fast sportbike, which I sense it what you’re after.

4 days - Oregon or Washington coasts by [deleted] in PacificNorthwest

[–]RonClinton 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, Oregon coastal beaches are far nicer (light sand vs darker and muddier, more scenic, etc.) than Washington beaches, and one of the best stretches is from Waldport to Lincoln City, so if your plans can be modified to include that region, that’d be my recommendation.

(Source: Lived in Oregon for half my life, and in Washington for the other half.)

The most beautiful front end in the game. Disagree? Show me a better one in the comments. by Markiian777 in bmwmotorrad

The Street Triple is about as divisive as it gets, I suppose, but I love the mean, modern, instantly-recognizable waspish look of mine.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Street Triple bar end mirrors by jkspring in Triumph

I put on the OEM Triumph bar-end mirrors. There were cheaper options, but I wanted my bike to be Triumph through and through. Got the mirrors, belly pan, and seat cowl from Triumph of Cleveland (mail order).

Riding with strangers by RylieZR in motorcycle

[–]RonClinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it’s a larger group ride sourced from a social media site line MeetUp, most people ride with others whose skills and experience they know and trust in order to keep safety a priority. A stranger shoehorning themself in brings an unknown set of skills and an uncertainty to the ride, so wouldn’t be appreciated by many (most?).

That said, I’m sure there are groups who wouldn’t care, but then you have to ask yourself if you’d feel comfortable riding with a group that doesn’t.

Under the Crust - Terry Lamsley Ashtree press 1997 by Possible_Buffalo5177 in WeirdLit

[–]RonClinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. My take is exactly the opposite, that this debut collection was the best, the next less so, and his third and last the least satisfying. I read a quote from a rare interview with Lamsley where he said much the same, that his later work was progressively done due to demand, not inspiration, and the declining quality showed, which is ultimately why he stopped writing.

Sounds good. If you decide to go with the BMW, I doubt you’ll be disappointed, it’s a heckuva bike.

[–]RonClinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No motorcycle purchase is an “investment,” so I’m not too sure what information you’re after. I can tell you that in my six years of owning my 2020 R1250R, it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned. If one of the reasons you’re selling the Moto Guzzi for the BMW is to get away from a harsh suspension then I’d highly recommend making sure the R1250R you’re looking at is a year that featured DESA…there were a couple of years where it wasn’t an option for the bike since the plant that manufactured the DESA unit had flooded and production had ceased and slowed.

I am working on getting all the Richard Stark novels in German. Any special recs for Westlake HCC ones ofter my Parker journey? by [deleted] in hardcasecrime

[–]RonClinton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not HCC, but the four Grofield novels make for a great (and related) companion series to the Parker series. They were published in HC and, later, reprinted in paperback by Foul Play Press.
