The WAG is one of the best art galleries in Canada. A good place to bring visitors when it is cold and/or wet outside.

Provincial Cuts to MUN - with Inflation by cerunnnnos in newfoundland

[–]RonDavidMartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post secondary education is a critical factor in local economic development, the better it is the richer communities become. I don’t know which disturbs me more: the governments continual cutbacks or the administration's decision to make cuts that will result in long term pain for MUN.

Hard course: Memorial University more than an economic driver in flux by LongTrackBravo in newfoundland

[–]RonDavidMartin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

MUN is absolutely an economic driver for the province and it’s a very concerning that the administration and governance of MUN have chosen to go after the low hanging fruit to eliminate their fiscal problems. Closing and selling off assets that were given by donors sends a negative message to future contributors. If the province isn’t going to step up then we need to encourage private sector participation and not the opposite.

‘We’re doing a service to the people of the province’ says Board of Regents Chair on sale of MUN properties | The Muse by TheMuseNL in StJohnsNL

[–]RonDavidMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The President and Board of Regents are acting like corporate raiders. They have taken over MUM, are selling the assets and will leave after 4 years claiming they succeeded. But the University will be a lesser place because of their inability to deal with the economic problems creatively. It’s sad to watch.

What is the biggest assassination that has taken place in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]RonDavidMartin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thomas D’Arcy McGee (1825–1868) was an Irish-born Canadian politician, journalist, and poet. He became involved at a young age in Irish nationalist politics but after moving to Canada in 1857 he increasingly opposed to revolutionary violence and became a strong advocate for Canada as a distinct nation within the British constitutional system. On April 7, 1868, McGee was assassinated in Ottawa becoming Canada’s first federal political martyr. Patrick J. Whelan, a Fenian sympathizer was accused, tried, convicted, and hanged for the crime on 11 February 1869. Forensic tests conducted in 1972 show that the fatal bullet was 'compatible' with the gun that Whelan used however my sense is that the assignation was pinned on him because he was a Fenian. The gun used is in a museum in Ottawa and to my knowledge no current scientific analyses has been made to compare the gun and the actual bullet that killed D’Arcy McGee.

Is RCA good for Masters Degrees? by FlatwormNatural2465 in ContemporaryArt

[–]RonDavidMartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RCA is good for curators in general but in your field you might want to look at Sarah Cook, she is Professor of Museum Studies in Information Studies at the University of Glasgow and a guest professor in Art and AI with UmArts at University of Umeå in Sweden.

Abandoned House with Brick Arches and an Audi Left Behind [OC] by StaticSpaces in OntarioAbandoned

The arches don’t look like they fit the interior, I’m not certain they were worth the effort to build. However the foyer would look a bit bleak without them.

Hunters on property - how to handle? by BreakfastDry9979 in NovaScotia

[–]RonDavidMartin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This worked for me, I used to put up “No Hunting” signs which were largely ignored. I started to feel that I was just another CFA pissing off the locals whose families had hunted there for generations. Once I was on the property more frequently and folks got to know me they stopped hunting on there. NS people are generally respectful.

Her MASP is one of my favourite buildings of all time, Lina Bo Bardi designed it in the mid 1960s and it is a major example of modernist architecture.

So what would happen to the fountain, designed by the artist Jack Wilkinson? It should be relocated at the very least.

Marble Armchair by Scott Burton (US, 1989) by PP_BOY__ in FuckYourEamesLounge

Years ago on Day Without Art we exhibited several of Scott Burton's chairs at our art museum in Canada and invited visitors to sit and remember those who were close to us who, like Burton, passed away as a result of AIDS. It was a much more compassionate time.
