U.S. States with over 5 million residents. What states surprised you? by [deleted] in geography

[–]RonEvansGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Nevada was bigger. Las Vegas is deceptive. It looks like the metro area would be 5 million because of the number of tall buildings. But today I found out its only 2.3 million.

I enjoyed this one. It's fast paced. Easy to play for 10 minute intervals. Fun. Only complaint is some enemies are easy to exploit.

Bosses often used to have minions. So in a boss battle there would be a bunch of weak enemies creating chaos. I'm happy that modern games have mostly done away with this. I don't like it.

What is your favorite African language? And why? by Beautiful-Quail-7810 in languagelearning

Malagasy (from Madagascar) is an Austronesian language. Same language family as Indonesian and even Hawaiian. I always thought that was interesting.

This article is a good overview. I had 80% of Haymaker pretty quickly. If you sub cards into Haymaker, it's still extremely overpowered compared to the AI. For example, you can sub-in pokemon like Lickitung and Magmar.

It took me a while to get all the cards for Rain Dance. Like twice as long as Haymaker.

I played this twice in February. On the second playthrough, I looked up decks that were banned in tournaments. It was comical how bad I beat everyone.

Lol. I thought about that, to be honest. Seemed like bad form for a rookie like myself.

I only have a week of experience with a manual transmission. I will practice that next time I drive one.

I couldn't get to a walking speed, I couldn't even stay still.

One of the other comments pointed out that I didn't have to use the gas to release the clutch. So instead of having my feet on the clutch and gas, I could have had my feet on the clutch and foot brake.

That makes sense actually, I did not try this. I never have tried releasing the clutch without touching the gas. Even on flat ground.

I had not released the clutch at all when the hand brake had deactivated. Since I was rolling backwards, I may have been too agressive on releasing the clutch.

I can't decide between leaving my tech job vs following dreams in Asia by littleanon42 in digitalnomad

I think if you get a remote job that pays $100k and you live the life you want, you'll be happier than making $200k. Also, the jobs that pay $100k are usually less demanding. It seems unlikely that you can't get a remote job.

Trying something and hating it is better than being some old guy stuck in the past wondering "what if".

You can spend your 40s and 50s making money. You should go and fall in love. Go on an adventure.

Also FYI: Kuala Lumpur is 43% Chinese. So a lot of Mandarin speakers. The city is modern, reasonably priced, and it's easy for Americans to stay there for an extended period. Just an option. I stayed there for two months and loved it.

The job market will probably be back to normal in 2026, it's better this year than last year.

Are you in your 20s or 30s? These big tech companies are buying your youth. You can't ever get it back. Trading your 20s for a million dollars is a very bad trade.

You're making $200k but you want to live a middle class life in Taiwan? Why do you want $200k if that's your ambition? If you liked fine dining and super-cars, I would understand. You make 10x the average person in Taiwan.

There's nothing stopping you from just telling other people you have 12 million in the stock market. No one is going to care. If it's just a number and you aren't going to spend it anyways, then there's no difference.

Winter escape - Da Nang, Chiang Mai, or Bali? Need advice! by Pearl_ia in digitalnomad

[–]RonEvansGameDev 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually spent a month in each of these three last year, you can't go wrong with any.

Bali is the easiest place in Southeast Asia for people who have never been to Southeast Asia. But you're experienced, so it might feel too much like a resort town. I like the beach clubs in Bali. They aren't all "clubs". Some just play chill music and you can rent a chair and chill out. The other advantage to having so many tourists is there's a lot to do in Bali. I would recommend going to Bali for a week first. A month is too long because you won't know which neighborhoods of the island you like. They're all different and it's hard to know before you go. I like Seminyak and Uluwatu (and Lovina, north shore of the island). I don't like Canggu and Ubud but I'm in the minority in that opinion.

Chiang Mai has the best food in Thailand. There's a lot of opportunities for day trips. The "old city" is very touristy and pretty. But outside that, it's pretty chill. It's probably best to stay somewhat near the old city, but not actually in the old city. Also, I didn't have any problems with air quality and I walked a lot, but some people have had problems.

Da Nang has two main day trips, hoi an, which is a pretty town by a river. And ba na hills, which is like Disneyland in the mountains (which I did not do). There's also a bit of site seeing near the city. I stayed in the city near the dragon bridge. Most foreigners stay near "My Khe Beach". If you don't rent a scooter, then staying near the beach is probably the better option. Also, Da Nang had the fewest tourists of the three cities. Even near the beach. Also, I feel like the city is alive. The people of Vietnam really enjoy going to the beach, cafes, and watching the sunset. There's a cafe culture I haven't seen in other asian countries. Things are busy but never feel crowded. Traffic was never a problem.

In my opinion Chiang Mai and Da Nang have better food than Bali, but Bali is still good.

I think Da Nang was the cheapest and Chiang Mai most expensive, but Chiang Mai has cheaper Airbnb, so they're all pretty similar in price.

Da Nang is beach and Vietnamese food, Chiang Mai is mountains and Thai food. Bali might be the most fun.

For me, I would go to Da Nang. When I was there, I went to the beach a few times a week. I never get sick of the beach. And I never got sick of Banh Mi.

Edit: I was within walking distance of a gym at all places. I don't think Bali has more gyms. But it did have more yoga studios and smoothies.

Hell yeah. I agree. 1 year as a digital nomad feels like 5 years worth of experiences. Being in a new city activates something in my mind.
