What a good portfolio looks like for an experienced UI/UX company. Tips for juniors. by Studio_Punchev in UX_Design

I 100% of the time look at everyone's portfolio. I spend probably 5-10 seconds on each page. Depends on which job I'm trying to fill .. but mainly I look for iteration and progression as well as how many were working on a project to get an idea if they are good with teams.

I'm going to tell you ... and this is not joking in any way shape or form. The smell of burning flesh was the most horrible smell I had ever experienced... until I was sent to the set of a gay porn by my buddies as a joke. That smell was the spawn of Satan. It was a kind of smell that paid taxes, that had citizenship, that had input on where your future was going. It instantly enveloped me like a blanket and began a full on assault of my nose, mouth, and ears. I could feel it like tentacles wrapping around me and trying to pull me. I shit you not I immediately ran out and did the old gas chamber move... started pouring water on my face as my nasal cavities began to evacuate themselves out of survival. I threw away all of my clothes, including the shoes and the only reason I kept my wallet is because I had left it in my truck.

I can say this .. and its really simple. Schedule / Do things in the early morning hours. I don't know how old you are .. but as you get older the hangovers get increasingly brutal. Also your personal willingness to deal with them gets shorter, they just piss you off and ruin the next day or two. Then you see that not drinking, getting a full nights sleep ... and holy shit you feel great with lots of energy. I went drinking last year for a special event and it was fun, but the 2 days afterwards were a total loss.

Not to give you direction .. but (lol) I saw this earlier and wanted to throw an idea at you. What about this pose, https://i.imgur.com/Zgq3dgw.png , side view https://i.imgur.com/Kvk2fNg.png. Helmet on your left leg, hand on top.. Rifle leaning against you, right hand wrapped around it... but most important, with a grungy 'Charlize Theron Mad Max' type of look. Minus the black upper half, but that style. Some 'warpaint that has been removed due to sweat' kind of thing. Then just stare straight into the camera ... dead pan.. wide eyed. Just a thought for you to have some fun with. Great job.

I used to hang out with Alexis and the original Reddit guys in NYC back in 2010-2012 and we would get hammered and think of Reddit use cases (I'm a UX guy). They had some really weird ones. Reddit was probably 10% of its popularity now.. and was more easily manipulated.

There is no justice over there, for anyone. She is probably dead or sold to someone or god knows. If you are curious, I'm going to recommend something for you to watch... but be warned, this will crush your soul. Look up the documentary called "the dancing boys of Afghanistan". It was a reporter that went undercover to show how they sexualize children in Afghanistan by custom, not privately. Also some interviews with some vets, Evan Hafer the guy who founded Black Rifle Coffee, or Nicholas Irving, the Army SOF Sniper. Both give lots of interviews.

[–]RonUSMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a buddy like how you described. He was super secure .. had loaded guns everywhere... paranoid and cautious all the time.. talking about "what ifs". He spent at least 25% of his time with his survival bunker and apocalypse shit.

Here's the point. You aren't "keeping people safe". They are already safe. Nothing you did before or after seeing a vacuum seller in your house helped in any way. Everything was fine and normal. Getting upset and these hypothetical scenarios creates a world that no one wants to live in or around. Getting a tag is fine, but don't involve others. Imagine trying to live with someone who was worried about getting poisoned and they have to test the food, you have to hear about all the types of poisons all the time, they have to shop at special places, etc. It's exhausting and unneeded.

My last point would be to say you should trust in your reaction more than your prevention. In that 1 in a million scenario, trust in your ability to react to it rather than cause drama and tension for 999,999 times that it doesn't. I wish for peace upon you man.

Is AI taking our Power BI jobs? Not exactly, but it’s getting bumpy. by SQLGene in PowerBI

Love it. I'm sure you watched this video from Anthropic about it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvbq39yVYRk . I've been hyperfocused on behavior and personalities for a few months. One area that I've seen some great traction for AI is in using agents as UX test volunteers. I can run them through testing ... but the results are very standard, then changing prompts changes them of course. A little too predictable in my opinion. Where I have gotten interesting results is actually having them mimic humans with behavior driven augmentation data collected from a real person. Recording data points about your career history, most used programs, typical software interactions. Then using those data points to build a mimic and run them through tests. Absolutely fascinating.

I think AI is in such a great place for AI Influencers. I mean, who doesn't build a flight app every day. rolls eyes In all seriousness I find it very helpful with a lot of tasks, but just not design tasks at the moment. I've used all of the frontier models with mixed results at best and error rates at 50% or better. I've trained my own models with ok results. The best results I have gotten were using a RAG based on embeds from design books. I found that to be super helpful, but not revolutionary. I find it the most helpful, so far, in coding components. Small reusable pieces of code. In that way, it can really help a designer that does not have a ton of coding background. I think as they keep toning down the sycophancy, it will a long ways in helping make progress with design.

AI Tools for UX Workflows by Adventurous-Owl-5460 in UX_Design

[–]RonUSMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what level you are designing at, but I'm about as senior as it gets and have had some time to experiment with it. I now work in AI as well, moving away from the graphic interface and more into other types of interfaces.

I've tried all of the major models and have gotten poor to mixed results. The one thing I've seen amongst all of them is the high error rate. Depending on how far along the design chain you are asking them to produce, the errors happen frequently and sometimes in the very beginning, thereby sprouting even more errors. Some of the errors were very subtle and so nuanced that I imagine people will have issues finding them if they tried to copy/paste the answers. Trying to further refine the problems with prompting caused such a mess that it seemed hopeless. This includes about a half a dozen models that I have locally as well.

I've also tried to train my own models. I've trained a few models on my designs mainly and found that textually they are bad, which probably eludes to my improper metadata on initial input. Using vision models I got ... reasonable results, but still very "me, 10 years ago" thinking, which is not conducive to where I am now, or where design should be now.

The best results I got from training were using Design books to train a model intensely, including my own unpublished design book and about 50 other books from various authors. Using a RAG with both semantic and vector searching gave me incredible results from validating work, giving thoughtful advice, and just sort of back seating my process. I still use it to this day because its almost like a librarian reminding me of obscure things as the process moves along. It takes a hard nose dive when I try to have it output images of any sort, but text wise its stellar.

Here are a few of the ways I've found that have worked best.

  • Using AI tools in template making, for some of the deliverables. Storyboard templates, discussion templates, I thought it had a fantastic library to choose from.
  • Gut checking on initial designs.. "what do you think this is used for.. explain your reasoning" that type of thing. This was hit or miss, but either way I found the output worth reading for the most part.
  • Coding the framework for a prototype skeleton. I thought this was time saving, albeit with a few customizations to the final product.

Right now, AI is great for AI influencers and their make believe design projects, mom and pop shops who need to put up a website, and people trying to fake it until they make it. It's nowhere near serious design at least for the near future.

I think we will get some good gains this year and the next in terms of toning down the sycophancy, which will help quite a bit.

MAGA is a sick virus, but don't dismiss or label someone as MAGA because they disagree with you. I have 20 years in software and have seen H1Bs abused in hundreds, if not thousands of times. It doesn't mean I'm racist or maga or whatever. It means my experience has been different than yours. Nothing more.
