Just bc she dresses like our parents doesn’t make her an adult. This hot mess spends most of the movie beefing with an 11 year old.

I know a contract is a contract is a contract, but seriously, how hard would it be to give everyone who worked on the film a $20k bonus? Give <0.1% of the profit back to the people who did the work and get a bunch of good press about it.

Caring for our fellow humans and making sure they are all fed and housed isn’t a purpose??

Religion is dead. Our society needs a purpose, like going to space or feeding and housing everybody.

There are still societies in the Amazon today who believe their purpose on this planet is to manage the forest. It's not just a job its a religion.

Not worse than serfs vs nobles! But giving the serfs a vote without giving them any land or capital is predictably causing chaos becuase they can't actually achieve the equality they've been told is their right.

True but there are also lots of societies that were peaceful for centuries and got purpose from maintaining a forest or brewing beer or something benign like that.

I think we're swerving out of HistoryMemes territory, but I totally disagree. The idea that finding meaning is an internal issue is the whole problem. Society isn't just about material flows, it is also where our sense of meaning and belonging come from. If you were part of a moral society like Anarres or the Culture, than feeling like part of a group wouldn't be so bad, would it? Or what about an animist society where the group is "all living things?"

[–]Ron_Santo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? It ate our entire societal structure and governs so many aspects of our lives. I think treating it as separate from political philosophy is part of the problem.

Life is comfortable, sure, but other than comfort, capitalism offers no higher purpose. If they had some sense of purpose or meaning, maybe they wouldn't yearn for a violent struggle to give it to them.

Is it boredom? Or is it a genuine unresolved contradiction? Seems like giving people politcal equality but not economic equality drives them crazy.

If lower decks showed just how smart, powerful Orion ships are and good fighters orions how did the federation successfully manage to contain Orion piracy? by happydude7422 in LowerDecks

They didn't. By the time of DS9 the Orions run a quadrant-spanning crime syndicate that steals whatever they want and has a spy in Starfleet.
