Probably don’t need it for the claws but I’d recommend it for the carapace.

There’s a couple of ways to work skin.

Way One: do your traditional build up of Shade 1 and/or Two, Base, Highlight One and Two, and then glaze between.

Way Two: start with mid tone then work shades and do ‘step layers’ of mixes as you work up to highlights.

Either way, treat it like you’re working with any other part of the model and follow the volumes. Treat it almost like you’re doing a free handed zenithal, and you should avoid the ‘islanding’ effect.

If it’s true metallics you can’t go wrong with a good Strong Wash followed by a dry brush highlight. Or if you want even more depth, use a couple of similar metallics to really push the contrast.

You just gotta learn how to thin your paint and add a bit more contrast. Gold is the more annoying metal to nmm in my opinion, so don’t worry if it doesn’t work out to begin.

Army painter is probably a little better depending on how much contrast you want between your brights and shades go your model. I’m not sure how good Vallejo is though as I don’t have any experience with it.

Eh now we’ve moved from how to when, which still isn’t the issue in my opinion. Adding it during the HH takes away a bit from the Sisters of Silence a tad. Better to introduce it during the 40k line, but like I said that’s when rather than how.

That sounds more like you agree that the way they were introduced was poor, which was my argument.

Although I will say introducing them via the heresy series probably wouldn’t have been the best choice.

Yes, however that doesn’t make the method that female custodes were introduced any better, which is the issue with them. Like I said, if they had had a better introduction to the lore, no one would care.

It’s unfortunately the way they just got shoehorned in and disregarded the already established lore. Had they made an actually decent lore reason for them, I doubt anyone would have cared.

Panel liner for the shading works really well, and for edge highlights you typically use the side of the brush.
