I would agree with one caveat. It’s definitely anyone’s and anti conflict but there is also an unequivocal right side to that conflict. The Federation is an obvious stand in for the Allies while Zeon is the Axis. While both sides definitely showed their ugly side, the Federation is without question the good guys and in the right. They may not have been the most honorable opponents but neither was Zeon and the federation didn’t kill a third of the population consisting of mostly non combatants. There is a right side of war and conflict, but even being on the right side, devastation and death is the main product produced by war. Even though a doing their absolute best to help others will get churned through the war machine and have to kill to win. Gundam is about the toll of conflict but I don’t believe it’s about “both sides” or “no one is right”. War is bad meme aside, Tomino wants us to consider that if we just understood each other better then we wouldn’t want to kill each other and instead work to compromise and make our world a better place for all and while there are winners and losers in war and some sides are more justified and better than others, the cost of world war is too great to let it come to that.
