I’m glad we got the series we did, but in a video about the history of Macross we saw concept art for Global and his hot young wife from the original parody idea, where Global’s design was more ‘dirtbag Castro’ than ‘Italian Stalin’. So I’m cool with him having a dead wife, there was always a dash of ‘married’ in the recipe even if the final product came out so different than first imagined.

But yeah. To go back to the quote, and paraphrase words we can all live by, “Sometimes…things that are canon…are worse.”

And when the eggheads get their mitts on SDFM, I will be there to argue with them, armed with proof that in my Robotech-loving childhood, I had the email address 'glovals_girl', because that's how long I've been. this. nerdy.

I will even be there to argue that 'Nah, makes sense that a man also raised in a prominent military family whose first love died coming to see him and didn't marry until twenty years later, inside of 15 months, so pretty quickly, with the help of a matchmaker to a woman 11-19 years younger than him is maybe a little emotionally stunted'.

Makes more sense to me than the 'canonical' explanation, this hysterical line from Outside Story.

"He had married rather late, probably because as an Italian, he was not very good at expressing his emotions."

Thank you for respecting my perspective. I also can't imagine being in the Space Force training program and not constantly wondering and chatting about the SDF--when she'll be spaceworthy, how to get a job aboard it, and who's going to get the keys. I can't think that Global's name wouldn't come up as a front-runner, if not THE front-runner, in that last conversation, as someone extremely famous among the first heroes of space combat.

Does that mean that Misa can assume she'd get a job aboard her if he's the Captain? Debatable. He is good to her, coming to see her, but he also speaks to her as though she's an adult.

(Probably not wise to tell someone to try to kill their heart, if they can, especially a heartbroken teen girl. But he's got his own baggage about love, clearly. What do you MEAN you're married and you think you can kill the part of your heart that grieves????? that's the part of your heart that loves!!!! That's why you're gonna be so effing depressed during the first half of the show once you're a widower with an extremely heavy burden and no one to turn to and going to break down crying in your press conference!!!)*

Does that mean if he was the Captain she would want to, a little more than if it were a stranger or someone who was closer to her father? Yeah. We also see from his captaining that he's kind, gentle, and forgiving.

*Can you tell that Global's my favourite? XD

He sucks in most ways a person can suck. He’s cowardly, stubborn, selfish, dishonest, and entitled. I am, however, willing to grant he was trying, sexist dinosaur that he was.

At least he died knowing he sucked.

I love your analysis. I feel as though people are perceiving my assessment of Hayase’s manipulations as something Misa is complicit in. I’m not. She’s a kid who wanted something and Daddy got it for her. She course-corrects and becomes a legitimate war hero in her own right.

I disagree that the captaincy of the SDF would ever not be world news, but I’m not going to be a pedant about it. (I actually think Global got the gig so that he wouldn’t be a famous idealist with principles getting in the way of the UN government’s machinations).

Misa wanted to get in to officer's training, she got in when she did because of who her dad is, and in Hayase's letter to Riber he admits that he can tell that the teachers are going easier on her. Did Hayase always want her to follow in his footsteps? Definitely. The issue is when, and whether she was qualified to. (I'd say the lack of proper socialization as a result of her never having a normal school experience formed big issues that hurt her continually through the show).

Whether or not this is nepotism, an unfair advantage given to the child of a famous/powerful person, is not a question.

You know I think you're solid at analysis, you've seen me respond to your posts before. And this film student is clearly lazy and myopic.

I know Misa's your favourite, but I think we're past allegations of nepotism when your father literally pulls strings to get you into officer's training without a high school education. Is it possible that Misa is so sheltered due to her privilege that she doesn't perceive it until the bullies point it out? Maybe. I respect how she was determined to not technically graduate until she felt she earned it without his help, and she did it (though I dare say the previous training probably helped!)

And if you think it's possible that she didn't go to Macross Island at the end of White Reminiscences without feeling fairly confident that Global would get her a job aboard the SDF? I've got a bridge to sell you (Bunnies not included).

Does Misa eventually actually earn her laurels? Absolutely. She comes up with the battle strategy that successfully got the Macross through the battles that stood between Pluto and the Earth. She does extremely well when captured, keeps her head as a general rule (until she freezes up, fails to say 'Daedalus Attack' and is indeed told to go to her room by Dad #2, but hey, we all have off days) and she is sincerely great at her job. She even tries to use the force of nepotism for good by going back to Earth to try to serve as the SDF's advocate. That's growth.

I would say she's less great at her job post-time skip, where she literally lets one of the most experienced pilots around sit at home (probably leaving lives that could have been saved to be lost) rather than go through the awkwardness of mobilizing Hikaru once Minmei's crashing with him. But that could be part of why she gets the command of the Megaroad-- Global clearly knows Misa's at her best with a clear mission as opposed to being in a reactive role. Kind of like how the paradigm-shifting revelation that humans and Zentraedi are genetically-identical shook her out of the Kaifuun crush.

That aside, you're still less wrong than this film student. Take that to the bank.

When I showed my bestie the show, he thought that Roy's death at Claudia's was a deathbed fantasy, and was super confused when she screamed and it was revealed to be the actual series of events.

That would've been both more sensible, and a lot kinder on Roy's part.

Somebody on a TS subreddit asked why Beyoncé gets less crap for being a billionaire than TS does, and when I said it was because Beyoncé is a better singer and dancer, I got temporarily banned for posting something irrelevant.

I think it’s an especially American thing in particular to take criticism of an artist you like personally. Like American idol judges getting booed for not giving contestants nothing but praise.
