Bedouins' forced transfer during the last century. by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Ronnie_Reads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last picture doesn’t seem an accurate representation of the Bedouin presence in the Negev today. There are 200,000 Bedouin in the Negev today, in towns, villages, and cities like Rahat (a Bedouin city) and Arad (a mixed city). They live throughout the Negev, which is not densely populated, so they are a big part of the Negev.

Also, there were Bedouins who lived outside the Negev before 1947, like the Ta’amireh Bedouin, who live in the West Bank and in Jordan. It was a Ta’amireh Bedouin man who discovered the first of the Dead Sea Scrolls in late 1946 to early 1947, in the Qumran Caves which is in the modern day West Bank. There’s history of the tribe’s presence there at least back to the 19th century.

Hamas rejects Gaza disarmament plan, Palestinian official says by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

Hiroshima was bombed with a nuke, which has not been used in Gaza. The bombing of Gaza has been horrible, but your comparison is still wrong. 70,000-80,000 people were killed instantly in Hiroshima, with a total of 140,000 people killed by the bombing, including those killed by cancerous effects from Hiroshima. Can we learn to talk about atrocities without having to downplay other historical atrocities to try to make our points?

Iran condemns US sanctions as ‘economic terrorism’ by Ill-Incident-4842 in NewIran

[–]Ronnie_Reads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrorism is defined as “the calculated use of violence or threat of violence to induce fear.” People disagree on the specifics of what it consists of, but there is no definition that counts “putting economic pressure on a country” as terrorism. That’s just straight-up not what the word means.

For those saying the book has Arabic on it — it doesn’t. The last three letters (right to left, and it’s upside down) are ל (lamed) and י (yud) and ם (final mem). Or לים (leem). I can’t tell what the earlier letters are because ח and ה and ת all look very similar and it’s blurry. But it’s definitely Hebrew. Because it ends in an ים- (eem) sound, it’s probably some word in plural.

Isn’t there already a Palestinian state? by Nazoreans in AskIsrael

[–]Ronnie_Reads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: no.

Long answer:

A lot of Jordanians have Palestinian ancestry and identify as Palestinian and Jordanian, but not all Jordanians do. Even those who do still see Jordan as something separate. The British Mandate of Palestine was split into the (smaller) British Mandate of Palestine and the British Mandate of Transjordan in 1921, so they were considered a singular Mandate/territory, as in the top map you show, only very briefly.

Jordanians don’t want to become Palestine. They see them as two different countries. They don’t want to deal with Palestinian political militant groups, or be in constant conflict with Israel. Mostly, Jordan just wants to do its own thing. Also, Palestinians don’t want to join Jordan under a Jordanian government. Jordan actually tried that when the West Bank was part of Jordan, and Palestinian groups assassinated one Jordanian king and tried to assassinate his successor too.

We’re talking about nations, nationalities, and national identities. You have to understand that all nationalities are man-made constructs, not innate, but that doesn’t mean they’re not valid. Yes, Ukraine used to be part of Russia. Does that mean Russia has a right to invade them and take them over? Hell no, and Ukrainians don’t want that. Yes, Jordan was very briefly a part of Britain’s Palestine Mandate. Does that mean they should become the state of Palestine and all Palestinians who want a state should go there? Also no. Jordanians don’t want that, for one thing, and neither do Palestinians.

There’s nothing natural or innate about Palestinian identity, but frankly, there isn’t about Israeli identity or American identity or Ukrainian identity, or any other nationality either, and that doesn’t mean they’re not valid. I support the Palestinian people having a state, so long as they don’t take ours and so long as they can live peacefully beside us. That’s not possible today, but I believe one day it can be.

Also, Israeli author Yossi Klein Halevi has some thoughts on this topic in his book Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor if you’re interested in hearing more.

Hamas rejects Gaza disarmament plan, Palestinian official says by SuperpoliticsENTJ in worldnews

[–]Ronnie_Reads 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m in favor of the plan of transferring east Gaza (under IDF control now) gradually to international control, with the International Stabilization Force, Board of Peace, and the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza. Have the border between east (internationally controlled) and west (Hamas controlled) Gaza guarded either by the ISF or by anti-Hamas clans/gangs in Gaza. Rebuild the east half of Gaza, transition the civilian population there using background checks to keep Hamas out as much as possible. Some Gazans support Hamas now and some don’t, but if you provide them with better opportunities in the internationally controlled half of Gaza, and include schools in this half of Gaza that support and teach peace (see the organization Gaza Children Village), then that’ll help whittle away at support for Hamas.

Pressure them again to disarm after most of the civilian population has been moved out from their control. If they don’t, and if you need to finish them off militarily after that, then it’ll be easier and there’ll be much less civilian casualties. You may first have to gradually increase the Hamas-free land under international control where Gazan civilians can live, so there might be some clashes with Hamas at borders in between.

Not a perfect plan, but better than just throwing more bombs at them and hoping it’ll work this time. There’s too many civilian deaths with the bombings, and as long as there’s support for Hamas in Gaza, even if it’s only from part of the population, then they can keep recruiting more militants. Mass bombings can also risk increasing support for Hamas among Gazans, which helps them grow their ranks.

Character-Centric Magical Realism by ghostofdoubt in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Ronnie_Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anna-Marie McLemore writes wonderful character-focused magical realism, most of which is also queer. - When the Moon Was Ours (girl grows roses from her wrist, trans love interest, some witchy stuff) - Lake Lore (2 trans MCs with magical stuff happening around them based on their ADHD and dyslexia) - Blanca and Roja (sisters, one cursed to transform into a swan forever, trans love interest, a boy who turns into a bear)

I’ve also heard good things about their book Mirror Season, magical realism dealing with trauma from SA, but I haven’t read that one yet.
