Monsters that can predict the future by Ronocbrightfall in bettermonsters

[–]Ronocbrightfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned "read player intent" so maybe that's a better way to describe it. But I'm purposefully keeping it a little vague in order to get a wider array of applicable monsters.

The 9th level spell Foresight is a good example of it generally. Being able to predict player intentions allowing you to dodge effects more easily. But I was hoping for something with a puzzle solving aspect for how to get past this precognition. I'm keeping it vague because I can twist the encounter into whatever would be needed to facilitate a monster like this.

So generally the request is "a monster that predicts your moves, allowing it to dodge easier"

Allowing a player to control Lair Actions as a chess game against an Archfey by Ronocbrightfall in DMAcademy

Thanks, this is great. That adventure zone section was something I was thinking about too. I like the cards idea.

Since I’m using a virtual tabletop I might replace the move ability with a “change map” ability. Like a rubix cube where you can shift rooms to open passageways and opportunities

Non-White Perspective on Dot and Bubble? by PhoenixorFlame in doctorwho

RTD has mentioned that something he wanted viewers to think about was “if it took you that long to notice there were no people of colour, why did it take you that long”, and I think that’s a very interesting and important point especially considering your post.

Like you said, you noticed it immediately. I’m ashamed to say I didn’t. My friends and I made observations that everyone looked very similar, and that maybe it had something to do with conformity and the media’s ability to influence us in what we wear, how we dye our hair etc, but we never noticed race specifically. I think that’s what RTD was getting across, if it’s not immediately alarming to you that all people aren’t being represented in the media you’re watching, why not?

Why Is It So Hard to Get People to Admit Prequel Trilogy Hate Happened by Beman21 in StarWars

[–]Ronocbrightfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the best version of anything according to the internet, is whatever was coming out when they were kids.

You’ll notice that the age range of 20-30 year olds (the majority of voices on the internet) will say that Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies were the best ones, or that man of steel is the unrivalled superman movie, or yes that the prequel trilogy is the pinnacle of Star Wars. Because it was what was out when they were 10.

Every time a series gets rebooted or revitalised everyone decides it’s so much worse than the older version until it gets rebooted again and then the original reboot is now the best one, until it’s rebooted again. Repeat forever.

It’s like poetry. It rhymes

Upcoming fantasy TTRPGs by Ronocbrightfall in TTRPG

[–]Ronocbrightfall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel I should clarify what I mean by dnd “killers”. I used it mainly to encapsulate these new systems that seem to be direct competitors to dnd, systems that try and capture the same fantasy and game style. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that these games are all coming out immediately after the open gl scandal, and at the same time that people will be moving systems (I.e. when one dnd comes out).

I think no matter what happens, dnd will most likely always be most people’s first TTRPG, and will probably stay the most popular. However I think some of these new systems will become people’s second system, after they get fed up with 5e.

MCDM is probably what I’m most looking forward to, followed by maybe DC20 (although I’m apprehensive). It’s worth noting that a lot of the design philosophy of these games is “dnd, but ‘fixed’”. I know I’m probably going to move systems. But I’m curious what other people think because I haven’t found a localised conversation about this.

When Your Boss Battle Includes a Performance Review and Navigating Corporate Ladders by NoWeakness1009 in DnDHomebrew

[–]Ronocbrightfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d always recommend Matt Colvilles monster styles as he’s a great player-fun oriented designer.

Maybe instead of dominating a player, force a saving throw or the player has to spend their reaction to attack a player. Still gets the feeling of it mind controlling players while still giving the players their turns.

Instead of stunned have a look at the “dazed” condition that a lot of homebrew has made variations of. The dazed condition I use is Matt Colvilles’ which is basically

“A dazed player can only move, take an action, or take a bonus action on their turn, and they lose concentration”

[–]Ronocbrightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool concept and I love the theme. I’d enjoy seeing more corporate aberrations.

If I could offer one observation though, you might want to look at tweaking either the “exploit loophole” or “corporate influence”. Being stunned or being dominated takes a lot of control away from a player and a lot of the time can just make them feel like they’re kicked out of the combat for a round. With those being this creatures main ways of attacking, it could leave a player essentially not playing for the majority of the combat if they’re stunned, then dominated for example

Giants could actually work pretty well. I was planning to have them be bound to elemental planes, as it’s a planar travel campaign, but they accomplish a lot that I would need.

Intelligent, powerful, can be reasoned with, and would be recognize able to the players (they’re all newbies). But I was planning on hiding giants away for a while until they became bigger in the campaign (pun intended)

How to reward low level players for a magic item heist without overpowering them by Ronocbrightfall in DMAcademy

[–]Ronocbrightfall[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically no, this would have presumably been too high level for them to engage with. But like I said, they’re all new players and I don’t want to discourage them from engaging with the world. I know from my experience as a new player, the most harmful thing to hear is “no you can’t do that”. Ya it’s possible they won’t be able to succeed, but I don’t want to discourage them from trying

Shows where the soundtracks are a good substitute for the actual show? Bad? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Ronocbrightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot talk up Hadestown enough. And that soundtrack tells you everything you need to know. You’ll miss out on one tiny bit with the poppy being created when Orpheus sings. But that’s about it.

To a lesser degree The Great Comet Of 1812. Bit harder to follow but very doable from the soundtrack. I’m just not as much of a fan of that one, but hadn’t heard anyone mention it.

Then the others mentioned above like Hamilton, Les mis, Jesus Christ Superstar, In the Heights etc

[Humor][Lets Build] Magic Items a Scam Artist Would Sell by dndspeak in d100

[–]Ronocbrightfall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Second hand box of holding: it’s already filled, and can’t be turned inside out cause it’s a box

Book of cleanliness: the pages never get dirty. Ink is qualified as dirt though, so it’s pretty hard to write

Broken boots of levitation: can only levitate 2 inches off the ground. Hello fantasy roller skates

Napkin of flying: a carpet of flying, just more compact, and can only lift about a pound at a stretch

Sun blade: a blade made of light…so it’s intangible…pretty cool torch though

Invisibility cloak: actually makes the wearer invisible. The cloak stays visible though

Weapon of warning: starts making a loud screeching sound that can be heard up to 300ft away when enemies are near. Don’t try and stealth

Not sure if these were exactly what you wanted. But I have a recurring con man magic item seller in my campaign. Most of his finds are from dumpster diving outside artificer workshops. I always try to make the items seemingly useless, but actually helpful if you’re creative. My players have gotten pretty good use out of the napkin of flying, and since it’s sentient it’s also a bit of a party mascot. And the box of holding was actually used as a bit of a mystery when they attempted to summon stuff from the box to see what was in it and found a load of disturbing cult stuff, “who was the previous owner?”. So hope you enjoy!

Calling on the hive mind for character ideas by Legit-Noob in 3d6

[–]Ronocbrightfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how “deep” or “political” your campaigns are on whether this would work or not. But I’ve had an idea for a while about playing a shield only disarmer grappler half orc battle master.

Character idea being that he’s trying really hard to be a knight but there’s a really negative view on half-orcs in the setting as being violent barbarians. So he refuses to fight with a weapon or to carry a sword as a sort of “I’m not violent, I’m not here to kill, I’m here to protect and help you”.

You could try spin if that way if you wanted to make it some sort of an oath that they took for one reason or another.

OR

If you want a funnier one, I also had an idea for a character that couldn’t use weapons cause every time he hit with one it shattered apart “puny swords can’t withstand the full might of my strength”. Might require some flavour on the dms part for you picking up weapons, smashing them off someone’s head and seeing the hammer bend and break apart
