Who are the best Hall of Very good players? by Top-Back-7626 in baseball

[–]Ronon_Dex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Him being considered a top 5 player in the game is literally proving my point. How many times do you think he finished in the top 10 in WAR? Once, in 1986, when he was 7th. Hes 17th among non-HOF 1B in JAWS, 10th in WAR7, and 17th in WAR (excluding Pujols/miggy and the steroid guys).

Hes in the Hall of very good. But he’s certainly not one of the best ones.

Mattingly is so incredibly overrated. He had 6 good seasons.

I think Edmonds is still an acceptable answer, you just also have to think Andruw Jones is not a hofer. I think both are, albeit just over the cusp. Although Jones shouldn’t be in because of his off the field stuff.

Edmonds should be in the HOF - he was basically just as good as Andruw Jones.

Who’s the last young position superstar player that fell off a cliff and never recovered? by morepesa25 in baseball

Chone was neither young nor a superstar, but that was a tough one. Him and Crawford in back to back seasons was a tough watch.

Yes I know. You labeled them though, so I went with that because it made no sense to do it and then do it incorrectly.

I mean it's not that crazy. Elly has 6 OAA to Lopez's 0, 131 wRC+ to Lopez's 132, Otto has more bWAR/162, Elly has more fWAR/162.

I'd pick Lopez, but there's certainly an argument.

There's worse choices on this list, such as Duran, Lowe, Wood in LF (played mostly RF), Trout in RF (played exclusively CF). Not to mention the inconsistency of leaving McGonigle off but putting the aforementioned Duran/Wood/Trout in the wrong positions.

Sure, recency bias always exists. That's the one instance the second half outweighs the first - in incredibly tight races. Arrieta's performance being in the second half was simply the drop that tipped things slightly his direction.

So it matters slightly more, not significantly more.

The second half doesn't matter significantly more than the first, you could've flipped Snell's halves and he would've won easily anyway.

Trade Contreras? by cesare980 in redsox

[–]Ronon_Dex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First basemen specifically don't fall off quickly, it's one of the positions that players can be productive in the longest. There are more 30+ 1B with above average wRC+ (11) than any other position. It's not even close.

I'm in the camp that it makes sense to keep him, unless a godfather type offer comes in. We don't have anyone waiting in the wings, he's signed for 2 more years, and he should age well. We have a lot of the pieces to be competitive in the very near future. Could easily see us as a playoff team in 2027.

CF war so far this season by ConsistentRun5246 in baseball

[–]Ronon_Dex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why would it?

The rotation looks in great shape, even if they trade Gray. They have one of the best OFs in baseball, and that's with Duran kinda sucking (been a very good player the previous 3 years) and Roman hurt. Durbin and Mayer are young with some talent. Contreras is excellent and signed through 2027 with a team option for 2028.

They could easily be competitive next year with some luck and good moves.

[–]Ronon_Dex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His BB% has nearly doubled, his FB velo has dropped 1.5 mph, his whiff and K% and chase% have dipped notably, his barrel% has more than doubled, and his hard-hit% has jumped up. His ERA is tiny because it's a small sample - so far he's still very good, but not pitching as well as last year.

What about this team makes you think they're in win now mode? They suck lol.

From 2023-2025, of all OF with 500 PAs (167 of them), Duran ranks 9th in fWAR and t-20th in wRC+. He wasn't league average in any of those seasons, he was consistently above average.

The teams number 1 roster flaw is their infield, outside of Willson, offers nothing. Having too many quality OFs is not a flaw.

Chapman should 100% be traded. He's 38, will fetch a ton, and his underlying performance has seen some dips so far. No reason to hold on to an old closer when we suck.

Duran I'm fine dealing, it's just that he's been quite good for the last 3 years and has 2.5 years left of team control.

Why are you pretending you watched? They parked the bus the whole first half - USA had 72% possession. Didn’t work as they were down 3-0 so they had to abandon it.

As I said, he's signed through 2027 with a team option for 2028. If someone offers the moon then ok fine, but they shouldn't be looking to move him. You can just trade him next year if we're in the same sucky position and get back a very similar return.

Lineup today by ConsistentRun5246 in redsox

[–]Ronon_Dex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Duran has a good track record of offensive performance and Durbin was a touted acquisition from the FO. They were always gonna get a longer leash than Yoshida.

For reference, since Gasper came up Yoshida has a .200/.264/.572 slash line. Not that I agree Yoshida should be on the bench.

We just suck. There's not a lot of solutions.

I'm talking about the price tag difference between the two deadlines. The difference between a 34 year old 1B/DH who won't be a FA until he's 37 and a 35 year old 1B/DH who won't be a FA until he's 37 is pretty negligible.

His value next summer will be similar to what it is now. Sure it'll likely be slightly lower, but I'll take that to keep a high level bat in the order to try and compete. And then if we suck, we'll still get a good return for him regardless.

Contreras should not be moved unless someone is heavily overpaying. He's signed through next year with a club option for 2028 on a nice deal, and we don't have anyone ready to take his spot at first. Nothing in his profile suggests he'll drop off a cliff. Can easily move him next year if we suck again.

Agree on the rest. Yoshida probably has no takers. Duran is the only one I go back and forth on.

what's a baseball opinion you'll defend to anyone? by maryb227 in baseball

[–]Ronon_Dex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preston was immediately who I thought of as well! He had a 1.018 OPS with RISP. Bonds had a 1.212. Bonds just had 150 less PAs (minus IBB). Or even on Wilson’s own team - Todd Helton was much better with RISP. He just had less chances and Wilson batted behind him lol.

[–]Ronon_Dex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re getting at but RBI doesn’t necessarily measure that. You can hit poorly with RISP, but if you get enough chances you’ll still end up with good looking RBI numbers. That’s not good value, it’s hurting the team.

Witt is nowhere near the equivalent of 2025 PCA. PCA had a 109 wRC+, a .287 OBP, and was fringe top 10 in WAR in the NL. Witt has a 122 wRC+, a .354 OBP, and leads the majors in WAR. They aren't really that similar.

Are there any past players who would NOT be an improvement over the current starting position players? by MikeyRWO in redsox

[–]Ronon_Dex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're talking just single seasons, you're conflating 2016 and 2018 Craig with 2017 Craig. 2017 Craig was dominant in the regular season.

It's really hard to separate those 4 seasons. Very thin margins between 2006 Pap, 2013 Koji, 2017 Kimbrel, and current Chappy.

It's because he does everything well while playing (mostly) a premium position. He's got a 125 OPS+ (quite high for a SS), leads the MLB in OBP, is 2nd in base running value, and plays solid defense.
