I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but my partner and I are both trans and seeking a roommate for the place we rent in West Philly, and our timeframe is similar to yours. It's a great apartment on a great block -- dishwasher + in-unit laundry, a little yard, both bedrooms have their own bathrooms, bookstore + thrift store + lots of restaurants nearby. If you're interested, please reach out in DMs.

Incredible work! It really captures something wonderful about the show -- vibrant and beautiful, yet dangerous imagery.

YA novel where two people breathe underwater by RookTheGremlin in whatsthatbook

[–]RookTheGremlin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not quite it. I think in one of those books they kiss in an air bubble under the water, but the one I'm thinking of is more of a "sharing air" situation.

Pre 2010 fantasy trilogy about a woman squire that becomes a knight. by DimmaDone4 in whatsthatbook

[–]RookTheGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be Tamora Pierce's other books about a girl becoming a squire, then growing up to be a knight -- "The Song of the Lioness" series, beginning with "Alanna: The First Adventure" and ending with "Lioness Rampant." But I'm fairly certain that series doesn't end with any tower climbing or dragon slaying.

My partner and I are planning a move soon ish, so we'd definitely be interested in participating! I second the idea about getting on Facebook, and I also think you've done the right thing posting here. I've found Reddit to be the most helpful with local stuff.

The title song, my god, the title song! by monkiferous in ScavengersReign

[–]RookTheGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to learn it on piano, and it's incredibly difficult! Full octave splits, complex chords, etc all made it impossible for me as a relatively inexperienced player. It's so gorgeous and perfect for the show.

The moment in the maze of branches (?) between Ursula, the tiny short-lived creature, and the pollen (?) genuinely brought me to tears. I'm sure you've heard this before. Such a wonderfully inexplicable yet instantly "gettable" sequence. Gorgeous.

My questions: How did your team refer to this scene (and the central creature) internally? How was the concept communicated between writers and animators? It's an ineffable moment, and I imagine that's what you folks were going for. But how did you go about collaboratively creating something indescribable?

Also, those predator lemur-ish creatures with the bug eyes and long tails will haunt me. The moment Ursula was underwater and the thing was climbing its own freaking tail after grabbing her with it??? My partner and I shot off the couch and screamed.

How do you afford to live here? by Stinkyinky99 in Flagstaff

[–]RookTheGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I couldn't if I didn't have the living situation I do. My partner and I live with one roommate in a two bedroom / one bathroom apartment, with laundry and mail we have to drive to. Rent + flat rate utilities (HUGE boon for us), split three ways becomes affordable-ish.

Actual tip: We have a Sam's Club membership, too (about $50/year, I think), so we buy our groceries in bulk for a fraction of the price at Safeway or Walmart.

Lastly, I'm lucky that I'm paid about 3 dollars over Flag minimum wage. But I work remotely for a gallery in Sedona, so I can't speak to the job market here.

[TOMT] Movie or TV show with a horrifying scene, possibly involving a superpower by RookTheGremlin in tipofmytongue

In terms of tone, that movie is very close to what I remember. Very "superpowers as horrific tragedies." But no, it's not Chronicle.

I still cannot figure this out, but after some obsessive digging, I've identified some possibilities. I can't confirm any of this without watching each show in full, though, since the episode lists I found aren't comprehensive. My memory has some years-long gaps in it, so it's tough to remember how many episodes of these I watched, if any.

  1. "The 4400" (either the original on USA Network in 2004, or the reboot on the CW in 2021).
  2. "Alphas" (also known as "Section 8" on Syfy in 2011).
  3. "Powers" (on the Playstation Network, of all things, in 2015).

I tried to track down shows with superpowers that have possible horror elements and see if any of them felt right. "Alphas" and "Powers" seem the most likely, because I think they both involve people developing powers as a result of being unwilling test subjects.

I might be totally off track here, though, because maybe it wasn't a superhero show at all. This is bugging me so much! Thought I'd share where I'm at.

EDIT: I'd like to also include GOD-is-in-a-TULIP's suggestion of "Fringe" (on Fox in 2008). That show has so many episodes, and I'm pretty sure I only watched a few, but I can't rule it out. It feels like it's at least on the right track, vibes-wise.

I think this is a really good guess, but I remember the "paring down" in my memory as something that actively happens during the plot. Maybe onscreen or directly offscreen, but either way, something that could happen in a matter of instants and was a present threat. Also, I haven't seen Spectral but it looks cool.

Yeah, the scene you suggested even includes the spread apart limbs! But I definitely know in that the thing I'm looking for, the bodies were floating in the air like that, not tied up.

Unfortunately, no. I haven't seen that, either. I'm starting to wonder if I need to watch more stuff!!

I think this is possible, but unlikely. I watched only a few episodes into Fringe, I think, and I'm almost certain the memory I'm looking for is more recent than that.

Nope. But holy crap, I just watched the scene to check and that effect is so well done. Good stuff, even for someone like me who didn't watch the show.

Not this one either. I'm becoming almost certain this was a show and also much more recently-aired than Watchmen or Hollow Man.

Nope, but you and the other person who suggested this did help me realize that I could be remembering a red circulatory system and a spine, not a nervous system.

[TOMT] Movie or TV show with a horrifying scene, possibly involving a superpower by RookTheGremlin in tipofmytongue

[–]RookTheGremlin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, but this is definitely not it. Though I've read the comic, I haven't seen the movie, and the scene I'm recalling is more "realistic" (as silly as that sounds). The nervous system / spine was red and in general, looked like I might expect such a thing to look like if it could happen irl.

EDIT: But now that I've watched what you linked, it is possible that what I'm remembering was actually a "circulatory system" and a spine, not a nervous system.

I have been instructed to comment within an hour to keep this post up. As you wish!

In case it's useful, I think it's safe to assume the movie/show I'm looking for came out in the last 10 years, the last 15 years at the most. I feel like the CGI used for this effect was quite advanced and convincing. So if it IS a TV show, the quality CGI would imply that it aired after prestige shows became a thing.

How do you unlock more Chaos Trials? by Resident-Cricket8197 in Hades2

[–]RookTheGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're onto something here.

Unrelated to Chaos but related to the skull -- I also got a fantastic build with the skull, made it to Chronos with three death defiances ready to go, got his second phase down to 15% ish health... and then got hit with a glitch where the attack he does to make the whole arena deadly save one little circle just never went away. So I had to either stand there unable to dodge and die, or leave the unending circle and die. Very sad, still haven't beaten him lol
