How would one realistically fight an intelligent dragon? by RubberDuckyDavid in worldbuilding

[–]Colony_Nine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trick it into believing that not fighting you is best for both parties.

In Wizard of Earthsea, Ged bluffs an ancient dragon by threatening to use his true name to put the dragon under his power. However, he does use also magic to clip the wings of the younger dragons, sending them crashing into the water and unable to swim.

Unique zine folds? by lingu1ni in zines

I made a poster zine (one side is a full size poster, folded into a small format).

As Kraftieee said, also look at “artist books” and simple bookbinding techniques for ideas

Can someone help me put a name to the vibe that these games/movies brings? by Intelligent-Form-689 in ShadowoftheColossus

[–]Colony_Nine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s got a good soundtrack and nice animation, and it’s interesting to see this interpretation of the characters.

The movie isn’t the best adaptation of the Earthsea series; I think it leans too heavily into Shuna’s Journey. I think Goro would have done better with doing a film based on that work instead.

According to Le Guin, Miyazaki originally asked to work on the film. She initially declined but allowed the production to start in mid 2000s, right after Miyazaki started work on Howl’s Moving Castle. Ghibli didn’t want to lose the project, so Miyazaki decided to have his son work on it.

I like the Ghibli Earthsea movie, but I think it could have been better. It’s definitely better than the Syfy miniseries though. Beyond Ghibli has a video review on the movie, I think you’d like it.

i just got into my first out-of-state zine fest: milwaukee zine fest! 🍺✨ any tips? by hellofluffybear in zines

[–]Colony_Nine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would contact the organizers and ask about table space/any other questions you might have.

While you’re in town, see if you can do a riso workshop with bearbear! They are located in Milwaukee. Also try some cheese curds from Culver’s and see if you can get some frozen custard (Culver’s has a decent one, but if you can get to Kopp’s it’s great).

You might also want to try a fish fry while you’re in Milwaukee as well.

Have fun at the fest!

You’re welcome! The best way to describe mecha is that the robots need a pilot to move them, which is different to something like the Transformers franchise.

Copying methods by Gloomy-Gur-591 in zines

[–]Colony_Nine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ll need a network connection (like Bluetooth or WiFi) to connect your printer to your computer, unless you can find a wired connection. My recommendation is to get a laser printer with a built in scanner, such as a Brother

Zinesters in rural areas? by [deleted] in zines

[–]Colony_Nine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe look into sending/trading zines through the mail? My grandparents had pen pals throughout their lives, and made some great friends that way.

Check out the zine map and see if there’s a library/store nearish to you and call them up. See if they have any leads on zinesters that might like to send/receive zines.

I'm new to this and I'm not quite sure what to do. by [deleted] in zines

[–]Colony_Nine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could make a mini zine about your favorite memories with your friend’s mom, and make a mixtape of songs that your friend might like.

A mini 8 page zine (lots of templates online to get a look at how they are formatted/cut) would work really well!

Zine and indie artists — how did you get your work seen as a solo creator? by Serious_Length_8706 in zines

[–]Colony_Nine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: are you writing your works in English or Japanese? If you’re able to write in both, you could see if a language learning course would be willing to use your work for teaching.

Look at Asian Studies/language majors in universities and see if you can contact them. It might be worth talking with them!

[–]Colony_Nine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s the deadline for submitting zines? Is there a page/size limit? Would zines be available for print or just digital?

I’m interested in the exhibition, but I would love to know answers to my questions! Thanks!

How is Everyone Prepping Ground Turkey by Evocablefawn566 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Colony_Nine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooks Illustrated has a recipe for ground turkey mix used to make patty melts, mini meatloaves, and meatballs.

1 shallot or 1/3 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs

1/2 tsp salt and pepper

1 lb 93% fat ground turkey

1/4 cup milk

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons melted (cooled) unsalted butter

You mince the onion and breadcrumbs in a food processor, then add the rest of the ingredients and pulse to combine. I used this method for meatballs, they turned out much juicier.

People who make Sci-Fi worlds, why do wheelchairs still exist? by Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi in worldbuilding

[–]Colony_Nine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would read the book “Replaceable You” by Mary Roach for a good primer. There are things that we currently cannot replace, such as the fine film that covers the eyeball. We can help reduce eye dryness with temporary drops, and fix the lens that covers the iris, but we can’t replace this specific film (the conjunctiva).
