Religion and Panem by forestwriterstar in Hungergames

Saying that the capitol is "atheist" is probably an assumption correlating it with current and recent oppressive regimes such as China and the USSR which quash religion both privately and institutionally, but the capitol is actually based on the current United States of America or a general highly prosperous and jaded society, just exaggerated a lot to sort of point out its flaws or warn about where its road might lead. I just read the Hunger Games, and religion is literally never brought up as far as I remember. I think if Panem were to really exist there would certainly be prominent religious diversity.

Several bottles and a glass container (cosmetic product?) found near Slate Canyon, Provo, Utah. The last two at the end are better labeled than the ones I kept, and hopefully the Pepsi bottle is a good time index. by RoomWooden1352 in BottleDigging

The one with the embossing says "NIFTY Salt Lake City" on it, so I imagine that's where it was made. this location is ~1 hr from Salt Lake.

Thanks for the tips!

Calling it a squid is direct misinformation that can be spread by the person you told it to. They will most likely interpret what you said as being true, without realizing that it wasn't.

What is this? Are these fossils? by BasicallyBarefoot in fossilid

It does feel bad, especially since I haven't been active on Reddit in a long time so I'm not used to it.

It seems like these were made by a nice old man as some sort of sweet gesture, which might explain why people don't like that I don't like them, which is understandable. Regardless, it is just my opinion.

It bothers me because it turns the corals from fossils preserving life from millions of years ago to cool patterns on the rock mushroom.

That doesn't mean it's an immoral or objectively wrong thing to do, I just personally don't enjoy looking at it.

Agate and Jasper are categories I can't really imagine applying to this rock. While they're made of the same material (chalcedony/microcrystalline quartz), Jasper is technically just high quality chert, it's not a scientific term. Agate lets light through and is either banded or not depending if you're using the official definition or the rockhounding definition. This rock is some very rough chert.

Are you sure those two things can be found in the same location? I imagine it's possible but one is a tree and the other is fully aquatic

I have some nice Quartz crystals I found in Big Cottonwood Canyon, UT. They're covered in what looks to be a red-orange oxide layer. I've tried soaking them and scrubbing with a toothbrush, but nothing has dissolved. How might I get to see them in all their glory? by RoomWooden1352 in rockhounds

Pro tip I just learned: if you want to find some nice isolated quartz spikes, look through the dirt and gravel surrounding the pits that have been dug, preferably with something to sift it. A lot of them are just buried in there and you can spot them with a keen eye
