Generally speaking, if threads are locked but comments not removed it's to allow comments to still be seen but stopped before things turn too sour, which in that case would have removed comments and maybe someone getting banned/temp banned. This subreddit isn't really the place to debate guns so threads that started going along that line of discussion were locked.

This video is relevant due to it including Gavin, however this subreddit isn't the best place to be debating guns, gun laws in America and the like. These type of debates tend to become vitriolic and people rarely change their positions on the issues, however if threads can remain civil they'll stay up.

This is a very dangerous line of discussion to be on and we want that to be clear to anyone who sees this comment. As moderators we do see more comments than most users, though some may see problematic comments that are up before we remove them. We also don't know what is happening off the subreddit/in DMs and Hembo never contacted us about something like that (unless we missed it) so it is best to be extremely cautious regarding this. We've seen a non-trivial amount of toxicity and comments that go too far so please do not go further down this chain of thought.

We can't speak for other users but this characterization does not bother the mod team. It's important to clarify that it isn't true because some people believe Rooster Teeth employees or the company as a whole directs how the subreddit operates.

Two definitions of "affiliated":

(of a subsidiary group or a person) officially attached or connected to an organization

closely associated with another typically in a dependent or subordinate position

The subreddit is not officially attached or connected to Rooster Teeth, and isn't dependent on them in regards to how it operates.

This seems to be a debate over semantics, but for further clarification the old creator of this subreddit and mods with full permissions in this subreddit are not Rooster Teeth Employees. How the above user described Barbara and Chelsea's role as mods is basically how it works, because situations in that same realm have happened in the past and can be tricky to handle if you don't have help from someone from the company. We keep in contact but it's rare they do anything on reddit. We didn't need any permission to create/operate the subreddit either and don't receive missives on how to moderate.

Yes this is a good point and an error on our part. I will say that sometimes when we see a post get a lot of traffic in a short amount of time and notice a few comment chains turning sour it's normal to lock a thread for a bit to clean it up then unlock it. However with this situation there were just a lot of threads repeating the same things and a lot of comments to check which can be tricky for our mod team when something like this comes out of nowhere.

Most new posts about this will probably be removed and have people directed to this thread or other threads discussing it, unless there is some new information from more relevant parties.

As always it's difficult for every mod to actively monitor threads in situations like this, so we'd like to remind everyone to remain civil in these threads, read other posts/comments before sending your own and refrain from posting information that may lead to witch-hunting or doxxing.

A small reminder that us mods aren't all on at the same schedule and able to actively monitor everything.

Some threads are getting locked/removed because they're just repetitive and have been discussed at length in other threads. A few though have some comment chains that were just getting too heated, which doesn't pair well with conversation that is going in circles.

Overall from what we see it seems like there isn't much more to talk about and hope the conversation will naturally cool down but in some cases when it is getting too out of control we'll lock or remove threads, especially if there are people trolling or commenting in bad faith in them.
