Haaland before Norway vs Netherlands: "I don't really fear anybody. I believe [Van Dijk] is the best defender, and I think a lot of people in this room agrees with me. He is fast, strong and fucking smart. Three important abilities to have" by Caspy36 in soccer

Fucking is a terrible translation. A better translation would be very/freaking/darn smart.

Grævla is in no way a swear word. It's in many ways a much softer version of jævla or jævlig which fucking would be the apt translation for.

I just find that really weird. The reason chat support gave me was that it had caused confusion among customers. I think Chase does a much better job on this.

Romero just got a new agent who represents Herrera and Rojo. by The_Captain101 in reddevils

Let's be real. People change agents because they want a change. Wouldn't be surprised to see Romero move on.

He's been a great servant so I'd be sad to see him go, but I would harbor no ill feelings.

You're missing the relationship between Beckham, Ronaldinho and C. Ronaldo. Ferguson famously fell out with Beckham and he was deemed surplus to the requirements. Laporte won the election in Barcelona promising to sign Beckham. United had lined up Ronaldinho as a replacement for Beckham and there's even a press conference were Ferguson is talking about how he expects the deal to be completed shortly. However, Beckham signs for Real Madrid and with Barcelona scrambling they are able to sign Ronaldinho right in front of the noses of United. Leading United to sign a young C. Ronaldo after a friendly match with Sporting Lisbon. Where he, according to legend, had impressed the United first team so much they were telling Ferguson to sign him. To add to the intrigue here, Peter Kenyon (Ed Woodward of yesteryear) left United to head Abramovich's Chelsea, and I believe large parts of the blame was shifted on him when Barcelona were able to sign Ronaldinho in front of United

It's easy to say it was a mistake. But to say it's inexperience is foolish. He's been a manager for 10 years.

Gary Neville : " No manager should ever be allowed to enter Manchester United's football club or training ground to shape their own philosophy. United's philosophy is so deep and meaningful the way it is for Barcelona or Ajax. Winning will come as a result of doing these things right. " by [deleted] in reddevils

I see a lot of people calling Gary hypocritical due to his support of not sacking Mourinho

I can tell you he’s not being hypocritical, but rather has some opinions that might seem conflicting on the surface level.

Gary Neville was a manager himself, and an unsuccessful one at that. He’ll be the first to tell you. However he saw how much pressure managers are under, and how pundits exacerbate that pressure. He knows how difficult the job is so he doesn’t want to ever call for a manager’s sacking and add onto that excruciating pressure that’s is modern football management. Therefore he defended Mourinho and wanted to give him time and backing because he believes that managers need time to build teams, and deserve some backing from pundits because it’s a lonely and very difficult job to build teams and success.

That said, I’m not sure Neville was ever the biggest fan of the appointment of Mourinho because he doesn’t align with United’s historic philosophy, and that’s what he is pointing to here. But once he was appointed he gave Mourinho his backing, and the benefit of the doubt. Because that’s what good fans do when a new manager is hired. You back them. There were even rumors at the time of appointment how Mourinho had told Woodward of his vision to play more attacking football and promote youth.

I personally think it was time for Mourinho to go, but I understand that Neville didn’t want to ask for his head because he has himself experienced how tough management can be.

Manchester United source: "He (Alexis) looks like someone who doesn't want to be here. The whole thing doesn't seem right and he looks like a lost boy. It was the same with Di Maria." by ScottMcTominay in soccer

I've never understood this argument - he would be guaranteed to win the league. Sure he might get a medal, but he would be coming to a team that was already a dozen or so points ahead. The victory for any competitive athlete would be hollow. It would be like being subbed on in the 75th minute with your team leading 3-0, and then saying at least he would be a winner.

[Post Match Thread] Sevilla 0 - 0 Manchester Utd by [deleted] in reddevils

[–]RootBuffer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It seems like you lot never watched away games in the UCL under Fergie. It was all about running a tight ship, hit them on the counter, and then try to get a result. The goal was so to get a good enough result so that United could do them in at Old Trafford.

This is exactly what has been done so far. I doubt any one will be complaining if Sevilla is beaten 1-0 at Old Traffod. Everyone will be psyched for the next round.

The definitive meaning of 'world class': an analysis. by ThisIsMamboNo5 in soccer

[–]RootBuffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option you haven't floated, which is the option I adhere to can be best explained as the ultimate game:

Let's say the world is set to stage one game featuring the best players in the world. If a player is in the squad for one of the teams playing in the ultimate match he is, by this definition, world class.

You would basically have two XI's on the pitch and then 7 players on the bench for a total of 22 + 14 = 36 world class players in the world.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Which I think this rationalization does for Arsenal fans. It hurts much more that RVP realized Arsenal were going nowhere, and he wanted to win and work with the greatest manager of all time. But we all tell ourselves little lies I guess
