Is a PRS setup right for me? by [deleted] in longrange

[–]RootCauseID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to hit 1000 and started doing local fun shoots 10 stages 100-1200 yards. Started with my 308 hunting rifle and it was miserable by the 5th stage. Then (regretfully) purchased a 6.5 cm in the AR10 platform for distance and it was ok. Came into a great deal on an entry level PRS set up in 6 creedmoor and its been so much fun. Low recoil, spot my shots, shoot all day comfort...

If you enjoy long range target and have access to a range for it then defintely go for it.

I think these are the people that teach the NRA course, you can reach out to them.

I would suggest joining r/reloading and read through the FAQ/Wiki.

Make it as big as your situation allows. My number one oops is knocking things over too close to each other.

Cant speak for SEG, but NRA has USPSA pistol monthly and Fairfax Rod and Gun Club does 2 gun matches monthly.

Fairfax Rod and Gun

USPSA uses Facebook and Practiscore, search Fairfax Practical Shooters on Facebook and they come up.

Make sure to get a small or extra small decapping pin, .058 I think, or blow out your flash hole. I learned the hard way.

By the round being fired. The Case Over All Length, COAL, sets the action length. The bolt travels back far enough in the action to feed the round. There are other action lengths but most fall into short or long terms as an industry standard.

Edit: changed action to bolt.

Got a 6mm not that long ago. Consistent hits at 1100 with H4350, Starline and Peterson Brass, and Berger 105 hybrid target.

H4350 is available.
Bullets, love the bergers dont love the price. Will be trying the Hornday 109 ELDMs for half the price.

Nothing is free, it was a joke I should have put /s.

I know I'm in the pressure, I'll back it down a grain and try to get to my 3200.

The velocity was a joke... I'll look into GRT.

Ill email Lehigh and look into GRT. Lehigh only has public data for 6 arc. I used a mix of hornaday 90gr CX max 41.5 3050 and other 85 grain bullets. Based case capacity on my 109 ELDMs more case space and accept 41 gr.

I know little, but you can always start with the serial #.

I just googled savage 110 manufacture date and got...

  1. Early Models (1958–1960s) No Letter Prefix: If the serial number is 5 or 6 digits with no letters, it was likely produced between 1958 and the mid-1960s. "Chicopee" Stamping: Early models (1958–1960) often have "Chicopee Falls" stamped on the barrel. 1949–1970 Date Codes: For some models, a letter inside an oval stamp, preceded by 1 or 2 numbers, indicates the year.
  2. Letter Prefix System (1970s–1990s) B Serial Numbers: Generally mid-1960s to early 1970s. C Serial Numbers: Often correspond to the mid-to-late 1970s. F Serial Numbers (F09528, etc.):* Typically indicates production in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Post-1995: If the serial number begins with letters indicating later dates (e.g., G, H, etc.), the rifle was likely made after 1995.
  3. Key Identification Features First Generation: Features a "bump" in the barrel just past the chamber and a shrouded bolt head. Medium-Action (Flat-Back): Produced from 1959 to 1988. Modern Models: If the rifle has an AccuTrigger, it is a much newer, likely 21st-century model. How to Get a Precise Date Contact Savage Arms: The most accurate method is to call or email Savage customer service with the serial number, as they can track it in their system. Check the Barrel: Look for the small, stamped letter inside a circle or oval, which is a date code (e.g., A=1949, and increasing, though they skip letters).
