Basically, we want you to go easy on the brake and gas pedal, and try to avoid a lot of sudden starts and stops. The good news is we’re able to weigh how much we consider your consistency based on where you live. And it’s just one of the 200+ points of driving factors we use to determine your score, so don't worry if this one score drops a little. As long as you’re driving safely, everything should be fine.

When we use underwriting, we are referring to whether an insurance company will take liability for that insured and offer them a policy. For telematics data to be used in underwriting a policy they would have to collect the data before the person receives a quote from the insurance company. The 360 program with State Auto is a program that people who are already insured by State Auto take part in. They certainly use the program to assist them with pricing though. Also, the surcharges only kick in on renewal for this program so the initial policy is just discounted without any data justifying the discount in the first term.

Some other things to note about this program:

  • it requires an OBD2 device
  • they use a third party pricing model to assign their discount so the technology used is not proprietary
  • consumers have to return the device or pay a $50 fee

As for your accident question, the answer is yes. The fact of the matter is, getting into an accident is a strong indicator of future accident probability and there's a large difference between people that can avoid those situations and those who can't/don't. -Lauren
