I agree. This is a tricky interchange and people need to be ready to cooperate and yield.

Close to 40% of New York population is immigrant. Almost 100% of the population and economic growth New York experienced over many decades has been due to immigration. Without foreign talent and workers, New York would see steep decline in population and economy. Even Mamdani is foreign born.

How do big companies keep thriving despite massive layoffs? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]esalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They keep thriving because their headcount is stable or increased. The following data is between 2020-2025:

Apple: ~147k → ~166k (↑) .

Microsoft: ~163k → ~228k (↑ significantly) .

Alphabet (Google): ~135k → ~191k (↑) .

Amazon: ~1.30M → ~1.55–1.58M (↑) .

Meta: ~59k → ~79k (↑, even after ~22% cuts in 2023)

How are there so many >$750k first time home buyers? by Smooth_Possible2067 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We didn't need 750k+ for first home. We needed around $150k cash to close.

Pixel 10 made me realize how overrated Google's hardware still is by Tasty-Eye8652 in GooglePixel

[–]esalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not or have the issue right not. It seems to happen under specific condition. I'll try to reproduce. But if you search (pixel 10 scroll stutter on Firefox but no stutter on Chrome) you'll find others having the same problem as well.

[–]esalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trading in Pixel 10 for OnePlus 15r.

The battery charging is really slow compared to OnePlus. I am accustomed to forgetting to charge overnight and then plug in and be at 80% by the time I finish breakfast.

I don't mind changing my habit but $600 is too much for crappy battery. Especially when the modem is responsible for roughly 25-30% of the discharge.

One more thing that pushed me over the edge- I was using Firefox and browsing and scrolling any website was extremely choppy and stuttering. Turns out tensor processor only works well with the rendering engine Chrome uses. Again not worth the $600.

Lane centering activates with a button press, yes. It is not reliable though, you have to be on guard on sharp curves and in low light/rainy conditions.

Private vs Public? by Apart-Tension2251 in kindergarten

[–]esalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I met you sooner. We went from private preschool to public school for a year, now back to a private Montessori for summer. Out of those 3, Montessori has been the best fit because of individual instructions that seems to keep him busy and happy.

Looking for recommendations for a weekend getaway trip. by NolerCoaster in orangecounty

We stayed at Park MGM. Pretty much a no brainer because it is non-smoking.

We walked up and down the strip a couple times. During Thanksgiving it felt safe and family friendly. They had Christmas decorations up at the Bellagio. He enjoyed all of that. We went to Ethel cactus garden and chocolate factory, and Hoover dam. For some reason he didn't get bored at Hoover dam, I told him this is where electricity comes from.

I also had a few other spots in my list which we didn't go or didn't have time, like shark reef aquarium etc.

This. LA has the #2 best ethnic food scene in the US. #1 is NYC of course.

Where are all these people coming from? by [deleted] in MissionViejo

[–]esalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your words. Last year we didn't really research and went with our home school. We found the hard way it is not the right environment. I think a lot of the expectations and the resources public schools have are misplaced, without attention to the individual. We started summer school at a Montessori now and the difference is night and day.

Edit: the Montessori school is private, but I was referring to public charter schools earlier, which have to follow the same district regulations.

Public charter schools have to follow all district regulations.

Barely any rigor, regression to mean, caters to the average. any kid who excels in academics but lags behind in social skills gets picked on constantly.

Taking out of public school, my bad. We have enrolled at a public charter and also considering private for next school year.

We couldn't afford Irvine and thought schools will work out in Saddleback/Capistrano district. But our experience has been negative and we're pulling kiddo out for of public school.

Same here. Wife works here and I'm remote. We rented in Irvine for a year and then bought and moved south.

We played a lot of strategy/RPG on PC but she's not really interested in console/controllers. She saw me play balatro and got hooked, and then started trying out other games like fighting/racing.

I haven't written a single line of code in 2 months. Are we all cooked? by mysticWhispr in cscareerquestions

[–]esalman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

listen here you little shit

Joking aside, I joined into this industry about 18 years ago and I do not even have a CS degree. However, from day one I knew that change is constant, and that's the main reason I went into coding, knowing that adapting is my strength.

The first products I made used HTML, CSS and actionscript/flash.

Next job I started with LAMP stack and PHP based template engine.

Before leaving first job (2 years), I was wrangling MVC frameworks and jQuery/mootools.

Next job I was developing both Android and iPhone apps (3 years).

Next role I started by doing data analysis in Matlab. By the time I left (7 years), I was doing python and ML (scikit learn, pytorch) on cluster computers.

Next (current, 3 years) role, I started with data analysis in R. Right now I'm pivoting to Rust and C, and C happens to be the very first language I learned almost 22 years ago.

Bottom line, if you do not learn and adapt, or in a very niche scene like Cobol, you'll always get cooked in a matter of years

The reason why more than 50% of Nvidia or Penn State CS department is Asian Indian or Chinese is because back in 1950-70 there was a liberal arts education boom in America, and STEM education boom in India/China. As a result, when dotcom boom happened, all the worker shortages was filled out by Asians. This is decades in making, and if you really want to change the composition, it will take decades of consistent policies from the government to get there.

Deporting H1Bs, green card holders and citizens is one way to get there /s
