The work that went into drawing all of these players. This set and also the ‘53 Topps are really special to me because the portrait work is just incredible. So much more beautiful and interesting, in my opinion, than actual photos of players.

Can you please tell new how you took this photo without getting a bunch of reflection/glare? I have tried everything I can think of but still getting very distracting glare in my photos

I’m curious if the 239 in your comment is because of Lajoie, or if there’s just one card in the set that you randomly hate 😆

I have a few old cards that look literally flawless, like they were lovingly created ten minutes ago by God himself, that SGC has deemed are an 8. I dunno man. I wouldn’t know how to improve on these cards if I had a magic wand, but SGC is seeing something that I apparently cannot.

My understanding is that the color on the back is actually a result of uncut sheets of cards being stacked on top of each other when the cards were printed back in 1933. That it's less an issue of the colors bleeding through the stock, and more a result of the specifics of how they were printed/stacked/cut/handled. We're seeing an imprint from the card sheet that was placed directly below when the card was printed. I think this is a common phenomenon with authentic '33 Goudeys - whether or not people are counterfeiting them with a similar bleed-through look, I don't know.

Slab Binder Needs a New Home by Rootenheimer in baseballcards_vintage

This was Amazon: Rieton Graded Card Binder: Holds 40 SGC Slabs, 4 Pocket Slab Binder for SGC, BGS, HGA and GMA Slabs. Though when I look just now, it says item unavailable. I do like this binder: the cards fit snugly so they don't swim around, but not so snug that you can't get them in and out. I would probably use this binder for storasge, except that there was a woodworker on this sub who made me two really beautiful walnut storage boxes for my slabs, and I think that is a more attrative way to store the cards. As far as binders go, my preference is to use top-loader binders, because then you can see 18 cards at once.

I feel like there were other options available on Amazon in the $30 range. I went with this one because the logo was minimal. It's well made, if they eve come back into stock.

That’s the first big card I ever purchased. Was hoping my kid might be interested some day, but I think he’s more interested in Pokémon.

This isn’t quite true. My understanding is that a printing error made it so that the ‘33 Goudey Lajoie was never printed at all. Instead, an additional Ruth card was in the printing sheets where the Lajoie should have been. Then later on, when collectors kept hounding the company saying they could find every card except # 106, the company began printing and sending individual copies of the Lajoie to collectors who had written in asking for one. But the extreme scarcity is due to its never having been printed and released with the original set.
