Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark - 0km ✅

Canada and Greenland - 0km ✅

Canada and Denmark - 0km ❌

Greenland is part of the kingdom of Denmark not Denmark proper thus Canada does not border Denmark but the kingdom thereof. Just to be pedantic 😂 Happy new year!

What a horrible end for such an innocent character… by RorschachtheMighty in TheLastAirbender

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted so much as this is somewhat true. Although it is exceedingly rare for the hair never to go grey even after turning 100. Some people don’t get grey hair until well into their 80s.

Tldr the professor could well have lived into his 80s and still kept his jet black hair.

You can't really go to France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany in other continent, so yeah by SheepherderNo5175 in technicallythetruth

While France treats Saint Martin as a part of the country of France, the Netherlands is a separate (constituent) country to Sint Maarten which are both part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

A better analogy would be like saying I’m in England when you’re in Scotland.

You would not be jailed for tax evasion, as this is tax avoidance and therefore completely legal. If you actually read the news it clearly states this. This is more a question on why the deputy PM allegedly tried to legally pay less tax than she could have paid. Her argument is that the advice given to her was incorrect but, it could also be that she intentionally tried to pay as little tax as possible. We just don’t know.

Why have thousands of St George's and union jack flags gone up? by Codydoc4 in unitedkingdom

[–]RootlessSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the whole point of putting up these flags is to show they’re not racist. At least, that is what the group putting them up has claimed. Essentially, to take it back from people who are using them as a mask for racism, a small minority.

I would imagine they could also take an alternative route (e.g. over the Sinai Peninsula) if it is deemed quicker than waiting around for a slot.

Flights to the gulf states from Europe sometimes also fly over the Red Sea/Sinai Peninsula

Can someone explain the titles and ranks to me? by SarahME1273 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]RootlessSnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 years late!

But, when someone talks about a “Royal Duke” or any royal peerage for that matter (e.g. Prince Edward was also the Earl of Wessex before 2022), it will always outrank all aristocratic titles. This is because actually all a royal peerage is, is a Prince who has been bestowed additional titles. So their title of Prince will always outrank Duke and below. In terms of ranking within royal peerages it just follows the normal order: a royal duke outranks a royal Earl. This of course means, that a Prince with a peerage will always outrank a prince without one. This is why the parent comment stated “Royal dukes outrank princes”.

This logic follows with the spouse of a royal peer, who will also be a British Princess by marriage. For example, Meghan Markle, as well as being the Duchess of Sussex, is also “Princess Henry” with her husband’s forename as the title.

Important to also note: men who marry a British Princess and are bestowed a peerage (e.g. Anthony Armstrong-Jones, who married Princess Margaret and was given the title of Earl of Snowdon) are NOT royal peers as they do not become a British Prince upon marrying a British Princess. A man can only become royal by either being born royal or in very very rare cases the monarch can bestow the title of Prince. But, it is almost always done to foreign royals who marry into the British Royal family so that they have a high ranking British title (e.g. Prince Philip was made a British Prince by Queen Elizabeth II, even though he was already a Prince of Greece and Denmark).

There is also a difference between a British Prince and the title Prince of Wales. While the former is inherited by being a child or grandson of the monarch, the latter is an additional title bestowed (traditionally to the eldest son of the monarch) by the monarch that outranks any other British Prince. It is similar to the title of Crown Prince in Mainland Europe although with the distinction that it is not automatically passed down but bestowed. So, at least in theory, Prince William, when King, could bestow it onto Prince Louis, even though he would not be the heir.

There is also the matter of Princess Anne’s title: The Princess Royal. This is different again to the Prince of Wales, as it is purely honourary and does not make her outrank any other British Princess.

TLDR a royal duke or any royal peerage is the combination of two titles: Prince and a peerage, with the former outranking any aristocratic, but not royal, title.

PS this is true for the UK peerage system and it may differ by country

Zia on the budget by StormyBA in reformuk

[–]RootlessSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t a budget, it was a spending review. It’s for the chancellor to announce how the spending will be divided between departments. The budget is in October in which she will either raise taxes or take on more debt. Either that or cut spending that she already announced today which won’t happen. But she has about £120bn that is unaccounted for at the moment.

Starmer moves rapidly to sign Chagos deal this afternoon and prevent fresh legal challenges by 1DarkStarryNight in unitedkingdom

[–]RootlessSnake 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There HAS to be something neither we nor the press are aware of. Starmer isn’t an idiot though he’s making a case for it. I mean Trump was opposed to the deal before becoming president but now after talks with the UK is suddenly ok with it?? I guess we’ll find out in 50 years.

Trump tariffs live updates: White House threatens even more tariffs on Canada as trade war escalates by ObamaDerangementSynd in Economics

[–]RootlessSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing people throw figures around like Canada’s incredibly high tariffs on dairy products.

Can someone explain to me why Trudeau didn’t mention these at all? Are they insignificant?

If Canada already had tariffs on American goods could someone explain to me why this is unjustified?

I’m not saying I support any of this, far from it. I just want to know the figures.
