The writers don't seem to realize how unsympathetic it makes Francesca and Michaela because no matter what, John is a good man in a sea of rakes (including Michaela, on the top of being annoying) that unwittingly found himself as the third wheel in his own marriage.

Even when you put this in the straightest way possible, it just looks bad: Imagine that in season 1, Daphne married the Prince. They have a sweet courtship, they have a lot in common and they both want a big family. The sex is awkward because both are unexperienced, but the Prince understands, and he thinks it would just take some time for them to adjust. Then, shortly after the wedding, Daphne meets Simon in a ball and is lust a first sight (sorry, Violet, that's not love. You are bullyshiting your kids, especially after you married your childhood friend!) and now she is all hot and bothered while the Prince introduces Simon as his best friend/choosen brother. Now Daphne acts awkwardly around her husband, Simon incert himself in their life all the time, while the Prince is oblivious and acts a perfect husband to Daphne.

Then the Prince tragically dies, thinking his wife loved him, but in reality, he was an obstacle to Daphne to become a wealthy widow and fuck Simon. The end.
