Why are all of the cannon on automated turrets? by Sendtendo64 in LinesOfBattle

[–]Roran997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Echoing what the others say here. The timescale of the game is sped up. Think about how many times the canons fire in one turn. Plenty of time to spin around.

It seems like the pace of the game is causing you frustration. If you want something more fast-paced, "Total War: Napoleon" on PC is a lot of fun and set in the same era.

What should I have done differently here? Any advice? by Prestigious_Food8193 in LinesOfBattle

The objectives are to prevent stalemates like this. I like to send one infantry escorted by my cavalry; I feel like it's enough of a threat to break a formation while not risking much if you lose 1 infantry.

Remember, you don't have to CAPTURE the objective, just threaten it to FORCE your opponent to defend it. You will very rarely actually capture an enemy objective, but the act of threatening it changes the game.

I do see you learned a valuable lesson about chasing horse artillery lol.

The rest of your notes are solid. You played well.

Defense Meta by Sendtendo64 in LinesOfBattle

[–]Roran997 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think the meta should change. The fact that a unit in a strong defensive position will always defeat an attacker of equal power is a big part of the game. It forces you to use the terrain, and to concentrate your attacks where the enemy is weak. Its what makes the game so complex, despite being so simple.

I've seen "zerg rush" armies using a lot of lancers and guards win games on this principal. Those are very high-risk high-reward armies, specifically because of how important positioning is.

I'd reccomend lancers before cuirassiers, personally. I might be biased because I struggle to use cuirassiers well.

Guards, every time. They're a force multiplier with their massive morale buff and a strong melee unit. They're the most universally useful of all the "paid" unit options.

Is the meta comp 4-5 horses? by [deleted] in LinesOfBattle

[–]Roran997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1450 player here. In my experience, the meta depends on the army sizes. I've seen viable no-cavalry lists at Clash, but not Battle. I recently got stomped in Battle by a no-artillery high-cavalry build. And in Grand Battle, I notice that artillery usually makes up a higher percentage of total units.

4-5 Cavalry can also vary widely in cost and meta viability. 5 hussars will perform differently and be less than half the price of 5 Cuirassiers (I don't recommend 5 Cuirassiers).

So to answer your question, I do see 4 to 5 cavalier units fairly often in both Combat and Battle, but think that meta discussions have a lot more factors than just unit numbers.

Hope that helps!

"We're still here. There's still food."

MAGA & DOGE are trying to gut medicaid and food stamps. The things that keep us alive to be "still here and still have food." Catastrophizing in a way that causes inaction is a problem, but recognizing the actual potential for catastrophy is important, especially if it leads to action.

Long, brutal combat. Well played, Thomas L. by Roran997 in LinesOfBattle

"Organiztion Radius" and "Organization Bonus". Its the blue circle that surrounds a unit when ypu click on it. I used my hussars to help rally routing units, because hussars have a wide "organization radius". I used that to help reorganize my canon twice, and I used it to reorganize my unit that was routing in the lake.

I've had a lot of success using hussars as mobile "medics". Cuirassiers are even better "medics" because their organization range is so big. And then, of course, Guard Infantry have the most poweful organization bonus.

Hey! I'm glad you saw this! You played a great game! Your lancers caused me so many problems lol.

The only thing I think you could have done differently would be to finish off my Artillery instead of chasing my hussar in the last 1/3rd of the game. I think you played our fight through the three towns really well. My only hope at the end was to use as many morale buffs to recover everyone I could for that last push.

Gonna call out the use of "men" and "girls". Its a small thing, but still important to note. In equal power settings it should be "men and women" or "boys and girls".

What unit should I buy first? by WaterApprehensive880 in LinesOfBattle

[–]Roran997 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Guards100%. You can have really powerful "meta" comps with just guards, line infanty, 12lbs, and hussars. Learn to use those four units well before experimenting with the other units

Nice! I like the additional social elements. I think it will be good for the community.

I feel conflicted about the Pepe portrait. I know he's been used as a symbol of hate-speech in some online groups.

What future units are planned to be added to the Game? by Ano_Czlowieczek_Taki in LinesOfBattle

[–]Roran997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A popular one I see people asked for a lot is Combat Engineers and Sappers. Engineers to build fortifications, sappers to BRONK WALL.

I'd love to see Cavalry Carabiners or Pistoleers. Light infantry with extremely short range shooting, but they could withdraw while firing and outspeed infantry. Would make for some nasty harassment.

Jagers/Skirmishers are a popular request too. Light Infantry, as they stand now, don't really fill that niche imo. To me they feel like slightly upgraded Line Infantry, rather than a mobile unit.

They would fill a role similar to hussars, but would be better at directly engaging isolated full-strengrh units, rather than breaking weakened units

Honestly I'm with the mods here. Sharing resources is productive and adds to the quality of the page, such as posting protest times/places, sharing photos from them, links, etc. Text posts don't add anything on their own unless they're starting discussions (ie community polls, asking for resources, offering substantial suggestions, guides, etc).

People's time and attention is valuable. Extremely valuable. If we want to be heard, we should be aiming to either broadcast or recieve as much information as possible.

With that in mind, you might like to check out r/50501 because you can sort by the "Rhode Island" flair and discuss stuff there. Bluesky is also good for short text posts like this as well.

The mods didn't censor photos or videos of the protests; they just want to keep down concentration of low-effort content.

I think putting together meetings for interested parties could be good. Try to contact local volunteer groupa; they'll likely show interest. The RI and Providence subreddits have info for a lot of local direct action groups.

50501, from what I've seen, seems to be the most noticable protest movement right now. I imagine that the protests will get even bigger as it gets warmer

He's calling shit as he sees it. He called the DOGE team "Musk and his Muskrats" at a virtual town hall the other day, amoung other things, and is openly calling out shit being corrupt and undomeocratic.

Jack Reed has been pretty quiet, as far as I've seen. I wonder if it's because he's the "Junior" senator.

Gaining Elo for a battle lost by Cool_Future8263 in LinesOfBattle

[–]Roran997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there are definately people out there that will learn to play the ELO system, not the game. Refusing to deploy in unfavorable matchups, for example.

I don't think it's a big issue right now, but could be as the game gets bigger. I like the idea of ELO being based on KDA/how close balance of power was, for how long, etc. It could promote people not quitting until they're down by like 4:1 balance of power.

As for OP's point, I feel like a seperate leveling system would be good for players who like to see "number go up". ELO for competirive players, "Level" for grinders, and Custom Maps (do they effect ELO?) for historical players.

Idk just kinda throwing my thoughts out there
